How do we regulate the new Universities?

There are too many State Government controlled private Universities. Of course, these are approved by the UGC as well. Colleges are becoming Deemed Universities.

These Universities offer a wide range of courses. They are totally new and one does not know the quality of the courses. Worse, they claim very good tie-ups with industry and offer good placement facilities.

The new Universities need a lot of support, though. There is nothing wrong in supporting good private Universities. For example, the Christ University Bangalore, has emerged as one of the very best in India, within a very short time.

The UGC needs to provide some guidelines and some measurement criteria for all such private Universities, so that the students have more information on hand.

As far as my understanding goes UGC has already laid down guidelines in this regard and all these educational institutions have to periodically report their organisational data in the requisite format to UGC failing which UGC can declare them unauthorised.
There have been a mushrooming of the new institutions in the nature of deemed to be universities and they are offering various new generation courses to the students.
UGC also alerts through information in its website about fake institutions and updates it from time to time.
Students should confirm and ascertain the genuineness of these institutions before registering in them because later it becomes a big problem if the institution is not approved or authorised by UGC.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

All these private universities are not charity institutions and they are doing all this for profits only and that is a business. If they are not providing good education and not maintaining the standards no student will join them. In such a case, how do they earn money? These days many private universities are performing better than State Universities. KL University, Vijayawada, GITAM, Visakhapatnam, VIT, Vellore etc, are private universities only and students are showing more interest in joining such universities than state universities.
I agree with the author that UGC should make rigid rules and regulations and see that all the deemed universities follow them. Erring universities should be punished. These students and their parents are very cautious. They ponder around and get all the information about the university before they join the college. Universities that are not maintaining standards has to make amends to their ways and see that they attract more number of students. Surviving for a long time without having stuff is not possible.

I also feel that regulatory and statutory authorities like UGC have to be more stringent and strict in monitoring these institutions which are levying huge fees from the students and imparting courses of all kind.
One thing is very clear that there is a good competition between the educational institutes for attracting students to it. To achieve that they have to maintain a good reputation. Only way to have that is by having a good quality education followed by a attractive campus recruitment history. It is also obvious that multinational companies or other big employers would not come to an institution just like that without checking it's credentials and past reputation. So normally most of the universities would not deviate from the UGC guidelines but strengthening the control of the regulatory bodies is always beneficial to all in public interest.

    Knowledge is power.
