How can a small country defend itself from foreign aggression?

There are some countries in the world which have a small geographical area and obviously their population is also small. These countries may be rich or average depending upon their resources and other things but due to less number of people available it is obvious that they would have a small army. As we all know that a big and strong army is required to defend oneself so a question comes in the mind as how these small countries would defend themselves from any foreign aggression. Do they keep good relations with others? Or they just agree to others for any trade or matters related to import-export? What they will do if someone attacks to annex them? Whom they will ask for help? What are your views?

It is very important to maintain good relations with all the neighbouring countries so that there will not be any necessity to go to war. If there is a clash between two other countries, we should not go on between or support one of the two. They should maintain equal good relations with all countries.
Such small countries should also become members of the United Nations organisation (UNO) and in any case of problem they should go to the UNO for help. War is not desirable. Even though one nation wants it other nations may not show interest. It is always better to negotiate and settle the issues rather than allowing them to get precipitated.
Pakistan is a small country but it never hesitates to go for a confrontation with India. That is why they are spending a lot of money on defence. Same is the case with other small countries also. They may have to spend a lot of money on defence and acquire weapons and other requirements from other nations so that they will be more stable.

India is surrounded by severa small countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and others and despite this, they are enjoying security coverage. The reason is simple in the sense that these countries are lucky to have a liberal friend like India to forgo their drawbacks in the different areas. The neighbouring countries are enjoying the patronage of liberal India.
If other small countries are encircled with such coverage, they are sure to get the protection. The other factors for the elimination of aggression would be to accept the membership of UNO. Being a member of this organisation would mean to have an umbrella for complete protection of threatening from aggressive countries.

A small country with a little army is not a safe proposition. However, it depends on its foreign policies and relationships with other countries especially the neighbouring countries. If the ruling party or Govt in such a country is intelligently manages its relations with powerful countries then also in times of war or conflicts they can get aid from them. Though it is not an easy task and requires a lot of diplomacy and expertise in international relations.
Sometimes these small countries have to surrender to the big forces who station their army there in the name of protection.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

One thing that is emerging from the above responses is that a small country must keep good relations not only with the neighbouring countries but as far as possible with others also.
That is alright but in this political world where international diplomacy is a crucial factor for survival a small country will have to take continuous help from a powerful country who can help it even from a distance. For that it might have to purchase costly military weapons and even pay for the learning of the expertise in the matter.
We can see the example of Israel which being a small country is not only doing a lot of efforts on increasing its resources locally but heavily depends on US for so many military products and ammunition supply.
So small countries have to affiliate themselves with big powers.
The powerful countries like this because it gives them a big business opportunity to sell their products on a continuous basis.

    Knowledge is power.

Indeed, this is a very good subject for discussion. However, I feel that the member who has raised this issue and the members who have subsequently responded have not addressed the issue correctly.

If all of you want to understand how a small country can defend against larger countries, then you have to study in-depth the history of Israel and how the great people of the country have fought against the blood-thirsty neighbours time and again.

You should study the history of Taiwan and its valiant resistance against China. Study is required to understand how Vietnamese fought against the Chinese aggression in 1979.

You should have also studied how some very small European countries like Portugal managed to save their independence and sovereignty against much more powerful countries during the Second World War.

However, in the South Asian region, some of the smaller countries are always in a war mode against India, their biggest neighbour.
