Difference between Resume and Curriculum Vitae

All the job seekers will prepare their Bio Data for applying for various jobs. This Bio Date will contain all the personal as well as academic and work experience details. Some of the candidates call this document as Resume. Some call it a Curriculum Vitae(CV).

Are these two terms synonyms? What are the differences between these two documents? It is not very clear to me. Some people say these two words are interchangeable. But some may not accept the same. I read somewhere, we have to apply with CV for academic positions and other positions we have to apply with Resume. Is it true?

Many well-experienced members might be able to describe the differences between these two documents. I request such members to throw some light on this subject.

As per my understanding so far biodata and resume are the older names for information about a person when one is applying for any position. Traditionally, biodata contained some personal information and educational qualifications starting from SSC level. One could add any job experience also below that.
CV is a relatively newer term and means biodata only but with time people have learned to make a elaborate CV which gives not only all the educational qualifications that a person had but also gives wok experience in details along with the projects handled. Now people also have to mention additional skilled obtained after the completion of education.
CV being a relatively newer term and presenting more details has led the confusion in some people's mind that CV is different than biodata.
I consider biodata, resume, and CV mean more and less same thing.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

But if you go through the various articles available on the internet, they discuss and elaborate on many differences between them. But how to authenticate those issues? I am not able to get clarity on that.

People use these terms interchangeably but there are some subtle differences that I would like to highlight in my response.
CV is supposed to be a comprehensive picture about a person's education, research, skills, and academic achievements. It also contains personal data.
Resume is almost a brief CV and gives all the information in a very concise form. It is obvious that Resume word length would be much less than that of a CV.
The last term is biodata which gives all the personal information along with educational qualifications and earlier history of working of a person in various organisations.
Nowadays the trend is for asking CV only because it gives the information about the capabilities and experience of a person.

    Knowledge is power.
