Selfless teachers need to be celebrated by all, at all times

There are some teachers in schools, particularly Government Schools, who work only for money. The salary is too good. For example, a single teacher who manages a primary school in most places in Tamil Nadu, has a monthly salary of Rs.67000/-, Sometimes, there are two teachers in the same school.

Yet, there is a massive difference made to Government school teaching through the superb Naan Mudhalvan Scheme, where the number of voluntary teachers and even some sort of Corporate help is making a big difference to the teaching process. There are reports of some teachers who have donated huge amounts from their own salaries, to improve the infrastructure in the particular Government school.

Furthermore, going far beyond their call of duty, there are a good number of teachers who visit the Corporate organizations and tap the CSR funds. Some CSR help has already happened in the form of free computers and even internet support.

Such teachers are honored by the Government. But this is not enough. The Lions Club, the Rotary Clus and such other organizations should honor such teachers and also chip in with funds to improve the state of affairs of the particular schools. We need a lot more action in this regard, throughout India.

There was a time when teachers did their work with utmost sincerity. Unfortunately due to commercialisation many teachers became too concious of earning money through tuitions and coaching.
Still, there are some teachers who are very sincere, hard working, and honest. State or central Govt must honour these teachers through verious forums and that would inculcate motivation to tread on a fair path for other teachers.
Teacher is the most important link in the education to career chain and it is imperative that we have to acknowledge the good work of the teachers.
In many states teachers are doing some other duties also along with teaching and one of them is to coordinate with agencies which can fund the institutions for research, projects, scholarships, etc. Some teachers are doing well in that field and are assets for the institution.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Some good teachers sincerely work and stretch themselves beyond their capabilities. At the same time, some teachers may be concentrating more on earning more money by giving tuition etc to students for some fee. I was working as Vice President of an organisation that is located in a remote area which was surrounded by about 5 or 6 villages. I used to travel from Hyderabad daily to that plant. All the surrounding villages had upper primary schools and the strength of the staff was less than required in all those government schools. The Head Masters of all these schools used to approach our organisation for financial help to recruit temporary teachers and our organisation responded positively to them. Our Organization was spending about Rs,70,000/- per month towards salaries of these temporary teachers in all those schools. Only the teachers used to approach us and some times the village Surpubches also used to come to us.

Traditionally, teacher has a very important place in the society. Good teachers can make a big difference in inculcating good citizens in the country. A good teacher is an asset to the society and that is the reason why the teachers were respected so much in earlier times. Today, because of commercialisation and materialistic outlooks teachers have deviated more for earning money than concentrating in their main purpose of shaping the future of the students, some changes have come in the perception of general public about them.
Still, as we get reports from various quarters, there are good teachers doing extraordinary work and contributing their bit in helping and motivating the students on right career paths.
It is necessary that such teachers should be encouraged and awarded by the institute authorities as well as Govt authorities under whom the educational institutes fall.
We must respect the teachers for their great contributions.

    Knowledge is power.

The role of a teacher in guiding the students is invaluable. He takes every care that no student in his class should fail. The perception of an honest teacher is every student in his class is like his son and daughter Retardation in the progress of anyone to him is beyond tolerance. Sometimes, pupils don't understand the sentiments of their teachers. Some teachers talk roughly but they are equally good in heart. Some teachers pinpoint some students asking them some lessons taught to them earlier and in case of their failures, they become furious.
The pupils understand the motives of such teachers only when they leave the schools with. outstanding results.
However, not all the teachers are of same nature these days. They would encourage their students to visit their residences for private tuitions. The pupils join such classes with the hope of their better results.
I would say that the teachers should restrain from such unfair practices in view of the overall performance of their pupils. This will strengthen the bond of affection with the pupils.

Selfless teachers or for that matter any one in any service will be definitely remembered by people who received their selfless service.

However in present world, even teaching has become just another occupation, and has all the elements of selfishness in it like in any other profession, job or occupation.
As a class teachers have moved far away from the concept of a Guru and and an icon or model.
Now teachers are organised lot, highly politicized and polarized or grouped under party loyalties or caste/religion biases. Accordingly teachers also follow the dictums of their political or trade union bosses and indulge in strikes, demonstrations and work disruptions.

Except for individual cases, teachers have lost their pristine position in the minds of people and they are looked as any other salaried employee. The attachment and loyalty is limited to the extent and period we come in contact with them or get their services.

Selfish and selfless are the two sides of a coin and continue to be existing in any environment. I totally echo the view of Neeru in her response and there is a swift change in the attitude of the present teaching environment. I have seen the variance of salary between the Central Government and the state Government employees including teachers, particularly the twin Telugu states is quite more. Previously the teachers and state Government employees were less paid but they have surpassed far. "If he can't afford to meet his livelihood, then he would be a teacher" - was an old connotation but now things are different. Some of the teachers are selfless and service oriented, I too agree but what about those who are getting indulged in the local political activities in Rural parts?
