What is your experience with robotic vacuum cleaners

I am thinking of buying a robotic vacuum cleaner.
This was in my mind for the past few years. I was deferring it till now. But now I feel it will be of use to me at home and also feel okay to spend a specific amount for that.

The delay and hesitation with me was that though I was aware of robotic vacuum cleaners, I could not get a firsthand experience opinion from anyone till recently. Recently I visited a family and at that time they were using the robotic vacuum cleaner in their home. I could get some clarifications needed in this regard from him. That made me to take my plan to go ahead for buying one.

So I did some more home work and shortlisted two a particular brand. Then I contacted them and had some interaction on phone and in WhatsApp with their person. So now mind is almost made and the only point now is to select which model from the two I had shortlisted. It is here that I thought I may seek opinion from ISC ians if they had used a robotic vacuum cleaner. I can understand that opinions will have personal flavour or bias based on one's need, expectations, affordability, return on investment and other parameters, but still it can add some inputs for a more considered decision.

Members , in this matter, please give your own user experience or from your friend's or neighbor's experience you have seen.

Many people are using the robotic vacuum cleaner for cleaning/mopping the floors in their houses. It is becoming quite common and popular now. I do not have one with me but most of my relatives have it and I have seen its working there.
It is an automatic device and after cleaning the room it goes back to its parking port where it gets charged for the next cycle.
Most of the people told me that it is a wonderful device and cleans effectively. At the same time a few of them told me that they do not use it and it is lying resting in its port. On asking the reason for that it was told that to monitor that machine is inconvenient and the maid can clean the room quickly with a conventional broom. If maid is not there then it can be used. This looked surprising to me but yes, some people have that opinion about it.

    Venkiteswaran,

Frankly, don't bother. Based on what a relative told me about somebody she knows who bought one- it is a useless gadget for Indian homes. We tend to have low furniture, so this machine cannot go below low beds and sofas. In fact, it bangs into the furniture now and then, especially since most of us do have a lot of furniture. It is also useless in corners (our walls have angles) because of its shape. They may not be effective on some types of surfaces and I've read a report that an in-built sensor can make it sensitive to certain types of dark coloured surfaces! Then there is the cost of the battery. I think the cost is quite high.

If buying, you need to find out which battery it operates on. Inquire about (1) a replacement battery - is it easily available and from where do you get them? (2) how long will the battery last? If you are going to use the device daily, will the battery last even a week before you need to recharge it? (3) how often, then, do you need to recharge it and how long will that take? (4) how much power does it consume when recharging?

Also, how do you maintain it? Does it require cleaning out regularly? If it swallows a lot of dust, will it clog the innards and affect the battery?

An important query- is the product you are looking at a silent one or noisy? If the latter, do you really want to be constantly exposed to a noisy device?

If you are determined to buy one, just type the brand and the specific model number (this is important as models defer) in a search engine and add keywords like 'complaints' or 'scam' and 'after-sales service' instead of just the general 'reviews'. It will help you to make an informed choice.

Vandana has already elaborated about this modern gadget. My understanding is also on the same lines especially its usefulness for our homes. It is a cute machine and does the job but if it finds obstacles it changes its path and tries to cover the area may be from a different angle and takes a lot of time.
Somehow, our mindset is tuned to old traditional broom by using which we can do the same thing in a few minutes.
Incidentally, dishwasher machine is another gadget for which we do not have good opinion of the users. In fact, in many houses it is kept on a shelf outside the kitchen near the main sink.
Some of the modern gadgets are a hit with housewives but some of these including robotic cleaner are yet to see that day.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

My sister was using one such robotic vacuum cleaner. My brother also has one. Both of them are not happy with the performance of the machine. My wife saw both the machines working and she was not happy and hence we decided we would not go for that machine. We have a manual vacuum cleaner made by Eureka Forbes. We purchased the same long back and even today it is working well and the service from that company is also very good.

These robotics machines are to be preprogrammed and the machine will work as per the program only. It can't enter under furniture as mentioned by Vandana and at the same time, it can't reach all the corners and the extent of corners left out will depend on the size of the machine. The maintenance of the machine is also to be taken into account when we decide to go for such a machine. Another aspect is the cleaning of the machine after completing its work.

I understand that Eureka Forbes is making these robotic vacuum cleaners, but I have no idea about the performance of their automatic machines.

Thanks for frank and sincere opinion given by members in the above posts. Definitely they will help in my decision making.

In fact I had all the(and some more too) questions and doubts on this regard. But this was always in the back of my mind for the last few years and I was continuously deferring it.

We do not have a help hand in our home. All the household works are managed by my wife and myself as per our time and convenience and mutual help. Of late we find many routine chores difficult due to our increasing age and some now and then health issues. Even the conventional vacuum cleaning also has become cumbersome for us. Now that gadget also has become dysfunctional. Repair is not readily available nor economical. It is in this context that I renewed my interest in robotic cleaner.

Doing a few days homework by search in the net and going through videos and feedbacks there, I shortlisted a couple of models and brands and again filtered and reached to just two models. Then I contacted the company by e-mail listing all my doubts and questions.

Company person contacted me on phone and explained and cleared all my doubts. To be frank, he did not claim any miracle capability and apprised me of the practical limitations vis-à-vis common expectations. He also explained other models too for comparison and suitable selection.

So I have now decided to take the plunge after knowing the pros and cons and limitations and the amount of money involved. For now I have decided to go for the basic model without much smart features. I find the price also relatively within my risk-return-affordability threshold.
I shall give my firsthand feedback after I buy and use the robotic vacuum cleaner.

This was a very informative post for all of us and we had discussed about the robotic cleaner in details. I request the originator of this forum post to share his experiences about the gadget after using it for a few days as that would be the conclusive remarks about the usefulness of this gadget. That information will benefit all of us.

The information provided by the author is very valuable to us. Before we switch to such an apparatus, I would like to know the details of the various brands available in the market since money invested in such products are quite justifiable.
Such an information will further bolster my understanding relating to the utility of such an investment.

Thank you Vandana for the reminder.
I had since ordered and received the Robotic Vacuum Cleaner. It is a basic level model, with the facility of remote control with our mobile phone. There is some basic on/off facility by voice control of Alexa and Google home. But I have not tried. It took a few days to become familiar with the product. The company people were quite helpful in guiding and helping us. They came online and showed the videos guiding us clarifying our doubts in WhatsApp voice call or by WhatsApp message. especially when I faced some issues in linking the vacuum cleaner with my mobile through Wi-Fi.
After linking and setting the parameters we needed (after some trial) now we are using it manually only as that is more convenient for us. My wife has become quite familiar with the robotic vacuum cleaner and is happy in its utility. It has given her much relief in the daily floor cleaning task. As of now the Robotic Vacuum Cleaner has become an essential and quite useful gadget in our home.

(I was thinking of giving a detailed Review under review section, but then I saw that only education related topics are there under that section)

Thanks, Venkiteswaran for the feedback. Glad to know you did find it beneficial!

Regarding the review, I have a suggestion. I used the search tool to see if there was any AE query related to vacuum cleaners since members can submit answers to old AE questions if relevant. However, I could not locate any, but did come across an article on Cleaning products that we always need in our homes submitted by our veteran Sukhdevji. In this article, he mentions vacuum cleaners. If you wish, you can submit your review as a comment to this article.

So far I have not got a good opinion about it from my friends and relatives. May be they are not giving it the time and efforts thinking that it should work without any guidance.
Venkiteswaran's experience is positive in this regard and the gadget seems to be useful especially for the couple in their advancing age.
I think people who do not like the quality of the work done by the domestic servants and manage the household work themselves, may be able to use this gadget more satisfactorily.

Today I remembered this thread when viral post in X about Robotic electric car to be introduced by Tesla and he honored our Indian Engineer in his post in X. He being Engineer from Anna University Mr. Ashok Elluswamy now Director of this division of Tesla. And glad this thread is on the first page itself when I come to ISC forum.

Also coming to this robotic somehow I feel our traditional thing is good, may be we are used to. May be due to our climate and tradition even dish washer too did not become famous unlike washing machine.
