Should the present reservation system be abolished and replaced with only based on poverty levels?

We have a reservation system in our country for certain backward tribes and communities. The main idea of reservation was to improve the condition of these people who were financially poor and were treated badly in the society. So far so good but a lot of time gone and the reservation system is still persisting while many people think that it is high time to abolish it and go for a better reservation system based only on poverty levels.
What is your opinion on this? Should the present reservation system be abolished and be replaced with a better one based on financial condition rather than caste or tribe? Please share your views.

Initially the reservation system was introduced in our country for 10 years but then it was continued and still running. The irony is instead of stopping it people are advocating for more categories and include more people under it.
It is said that political ambitions are the main reasons behind continuation of reservation system because no Govt will like to create dissatisfaction among reserved categories by scrapping reservation.
The question is who will bell the cat? In our country voters decide the fate of political party and any party which goes against reservation would lose heavily in election.
The change suggested from caste to financial condition is alright but the ruling party should be bold enough to do it. I don't see any possibility of such a move by any Govt in power.

I am against reservations based on Caste and Religion. There should not be any reservations. Financial support can be given to poor students who can't afford to pay fees and other expenses. Under reservation policy, some candidates who are not able to cope with the subject are committing suicide after joining institutes like IITs. So only students with merit should be given admission and poor students who got admitted can be financially supported.
Presently reservations are becoming a tool for obtaining votes from some castes and religions. In the guise of reservations based on castes and religions, children of IAS officers, engineers and doctors only are getting benefitted. The real deserving cases are not getting any benefits. Daily wages labour's son does not even know what advantages he has under the reservation policy. That is most unfortunate.
All reservations should be abolished. But no party is ready to do it as they may lose their vote bank.

I also agree that there was a time when a need for reservation was felt and law was enacted for it. But today it is not required. The purpose of the scheme was long met and now we are unnecessarily dragging it ahead creating more problems day by day.
In this world we can divide the people only in two categories - one who have money and other who are poor. So the poor category deserves any reservation or any such help from the Govt. Those who have money do not deserve any reservation or any preference in any selection for job. It is as simple as that. But unfortunately many of the political leaders do not want to make this change as their voters belong to the reserved category. This is the irony of the present system.

    Knowledge is power.
