Do you remember when your first article/story in English or in any other language was published?

Many people have interest in writing. It requires the knowledge about a topic and control on the language in which one is writing. It could be a story or poem or article or an essay or a freehand write up for a contest, etc. Earlier we used to send our articles/stories to publication houses for publishing it in their magazines or periodicals. Now we upload it to the websites. Once approved they will get published. It is always a thrill to get the message or confirmation of publishing about our first article/story.
Do you remember when your first article/story in English or in any other language was published? Where it was published and what it was about? Please share.

I used to write small stories and essays during my high school and college days in my mother tongue and they got published in my school and college magazines. The first was published when I was in 9th class. I wrote an essay about LalBahadur Sastry. During my university studies, during my research career I published 16 scientific articles based on my research were published. Some articles came in very reputed international journals. One of my publications at that time received the best paper award in a seminar. During my career, I published about 30 articles based on the work I did in my R&D laboratory. I presented papers in some national and international seminars during my career. I did work in our R & D laboratory which was affiliated with a state university in the state of Karnataka. About 100 articles written on various subjects were published on the ISC site in the article section.

Dr Rao, it is amazing that you started writing articles/stories since your high school time. You are definitely an early bird in this respect.
In my case after doing my PG only I got some ideas that I could also write some story or some other content like that. But it took for me a good 7-8 years to actually pen my first story in Hindi language and I sent it for publishing in 'Sarita' magazine which was a very popular Hindi magazine at that time. I was happy as well as surprised to see that it was published and I got a good remuneration also.
After that I wrote some general articles which were published in some women magazines. I wrote a few recipes also but my speed was very slow and I was writing one content per 2-3 months. Anyway, that helped me to sharpen my writing wits and I could learn content writing in a better way.

Neeru Bhatt, My father is a good poet and writer in Telugu. He taught me some Sanskrit and Telugu grammar in high school. That helped me a lot and I was able to write an essay when I was in high school. I wrote a Satakam (100 Poems with the same last line in all the poems is called Satakam in Telugu) in the Telugu language and got it published on my own.

When I was in my school then I had a lot of interest in reading books especially children story books and some other related material. After that I started reading Hindi novels and English stories. By the time I reached my undergraduate level I had read a good number of story books by various authors not only Indian authors but authors across the globe. Many good books written by foreign writers were translated in Hindi and were available in the district Govt library and I went through them and got a taste of that kind of writing which was often much affected by the different respective cultures in the world.
Anyway, the net affect of that was that I was inspired to write myself and I wrote a few articles and sent for publication in some leading magazines of that time.
They were sent back to me seeking changes and corrections and finding the task difficult I stopped writing at that point of time.
Later during my active service I participated in some story writing contest and got consolation award but there was no publication of sort for it.
Of course I had published a few technical articles in some journals but that is a different genre and I do not consider them mentioning here as creative writing.
After my retirement, I restarted my writing hobby and my articles got published in a few reputed sites including ISC.
I do not remember my first article but my initial articles were published during 2016-2017. So far I have published about a total of 230+ articles/stories/poems etc in various sites.

    Knowledge is power.

Yes. Very well. When I have finished my certificate course, National Certificate Examination in Supervision from National Productivity Council, I sent an article 'Effective Communication' to the magazine published by the NPC, New Delhi. They approved and published in the magazine of them. This made me to feel happy and involve myself in writing further.

Initially, I was interested in writing poems in my mother tongue (Tamil) during my college days, but not published, my friends being the critics. My brother motivated me to write in English as I was interested and good in English vocabulary and literature. When I completed my graduation I started to scribble (something interesting, I believe) and got appreciation from my friends. Later on, after a few decades of familial commitments, I had been to blogging when I joined the Batchmates blogger community of my friends and posted blogs, which eventually stamped me as a blogger. However, I am privileged to be thankful to ISC, which has tuned my writing skills (articles and poems). It was a proud moment when I published my first short fiction in English on Amazon Kindle titled, "Love Story of a Seafarer's Queen." Indeed, it is a milestone in my writing journey. I would still love to plot my second Kindle edition, but time to go and I hope soon.

Bhavani, yes, Amazon Kindle desktop publishing is one of the popular self publishing platforms for the writers and good to know that you have already utilised that for your book. Nowadays there are many online platforms available free of charge and one can publish one's book on any subject. Some of these are NotionPress, BlueRose, Lulu, Blurb, Amazon, etc. Only thing is one has to get acquainted with the uploading and editing procedures in that particular site.
There are many members here having such experiences. Hope they share their writing history in this thread.

It was during my tenth class time that I wrote a poem and sent to a Malayalam magazine. It was not published. A few more times I had sent different article(essay) or poem to different magazines in Malayalam and English. None of them got published even though n one case I got a letter from editor's office that they will do it in due course. It was much later that I knew the reason why none of them was returned- I had not attached stamped self address envelope.
The first thing which got published was a letter to editor in a Malayalam newspaper when I was i my 11 th class. Thereafter two more letters got published in The Indian Express Kochi edition.
Then after getting job my focus got changed, and I was like 'jack of all trades; master of none' .
It was again when I was in charge of an office that my literary talents started showing. There were a few colleagues who were also similarly interested. I Just to have some diversion from the busy and monotonousness, I used to scribble short poetic verses and pass on to such colleagues .Sometimes I used to get response in same poetic way. (I was also approached by colleagues and their friends for giving them essays and speech writing which I used to oblige happily.)
Another such incident was the English poem I wrote and read and distributed on the occasion of farewell of my Regional Boss. It was well appreciated.

On the day of my transfer and farewell from that office, my colleagues surprised me by presenting me with a computer printed booklet which had about more than thirty of my poetic verses and couplets , which I had scribbled during my time there. I was never told that some colleague was collecting and keeping all of those scribbling paper pieces. I still hold that as a treasured piece -not to show my talent, but as the symbol of affection my colleagues had to me.

During my career I had many occasions to speak in various meetings in public and in-house. That still continues and last year I had shared dais with the Municipal Chairman, local MLA, MP and other dignitaries in a public awareness meting.

Before joining ISC I was a member in a forum website, where I had posted a number of forum discussion posts. Otherwise all my writings are with ISC .

Venkiteswaran has presented an interesting creative journey starting from publishing of his letters to the editor in a local daily newspaper. I remember, that time getting a letter published in a newspaper was a quite big achievement because editors were getting so many responses and comments from the readers in black and white but due to space limitations had to select only a few for publication.
