Ready-made powders can be very dangerous

Recent reports of some harmful preservatives being added to the readymade sambar and other variants of ready to cook varieties of powders, which most housewives use, is highly disturbing. This brand is available in so many States and is a leading advertiser on television and print media as well.

While there does not seem to be a big uproar, some health experts have warned against excessive use of such branded products.

The housewives could possibly follow the traditional method of fresh preparation of such powders, knowledge of which can be easily found in numerous YouTube videos

A nice advisory by the author. Adulteration of food items is a menace that is going on inspite of regulations, checks, and raids by the authorities from time to time. For making quick profits people are engaging in various malpractices in this regard. Not only in powder form but even in whole grains or items it is being done rampantly.
In powder form it is difficult to make out and we often take the branded items as pure. I agree that there is no substitute for house prepared spice powders but in today's modern lives how many of us are ready to do that cumbersome work? People today are ordering readymade food instead of cooking and what to say of powdered spices.
The solution lies in strict Govt regulations and honest implementation of that to punish the culprits who are engaged in such practices and playing with the health of the common people.

    Knowledge is power.

The advice is good but where is the time to follow these things? Ready-made foods of even many branded companies are also not reliable. We hear that cool soft drinks are very dangerous for health but we will many people consuming them and companies are doing very good business.
If we make them in our house they will be cheap and at the same time, they will be pure also. But the main problem is not having enough time. When both the wife and husband are earning, they will be busy with their official work and the time for household work will be less. So they will try to get ready-made food from outside. Even though these foods are not contaminated, they use cheap raw materials like oil, rice, wheat etc. So that food is not healthy for our health. One should have good eating habits and try to upkeep their health by going for quality food and healthy habits.

Everything beyond natural is just not acceptable. However for the feasibility sake readymade items are introduced and run in vogue. We are all accepting the facility but miscreants took advantage on that feasibility start mixing adulteration. We all just fall in their web and killing ourselves with slow poison made by them. On one side present generation keep themselves with good alert in their lifestyles and at the same time some others killing themselves with food beyond natural.
Both over smart and poor smart people are living with us.
Sometimes food from roadside cart is good and hygienic but food of great hi-style hotel contains adulterated food.
One day I saw a lady selling dosa in the cart food stall by sprinkling chilli powders and oil on the dosa. I casually noticed that and watched by standing there. She kept the chilli powder in a plastic container and told that she made it in her house by her own. But in hotels they are using similar items from readymade powder makers.
As told by the law, 'caveat emptor' = let the buyer beware, we the consumers should aware of such products and keep ourselves alert from consuming.

Turning to traditional methods of preparation, as you suggested, can be a healthier alternative. YouTube and other online platforms offer a wealth of resources for learning these traditional cooking methods. Embracing fresh ingredients and homemade preparations can not only enhance the nutritional value of meals but also reduce reliance on processed foods with potentially harmful additives.

The concluding para of the thread says "..The housewives could possibly follow the traditional method of fresh preparation of such powders, ...". It is another sad story that many items we get are either adulterated or have some pesticides and harmful chemicals trace on them.

Most of the Coriander seeds we get are the after products of essence extracted already. Like that most grocery items are not having their original taste and texture.
As they say in Malayalam/Tamil' Ellaame maayam' everything is adulterated or fake.

We are witnessing a dangerous trend of adulteration in our eatery items. The unfortunate part is that it is being observed in such brands which have created reputations of their standards in the public mind. People are so accustomed that they cannot believe that such items are injurious to their health. This shows how blindly they have their intrinsic faith in such manufacturers.
I agree that our housewives don't have time to check the purity of contents and they go by the details indicated in the leaflets. The laboratory investigation reveals otherwise. Since the warning is related to our health issues, we need to take every precaution to safeguard our health.
We have observed that in the past housewives used to add spices made from their techniques ie using grinding of the different spices ensuring the purity of spices. I think that is the best way of avoiding the risk of contamination. Let us resort to these old models.

We are using all sorts of spice powders in our daily dishes that we prepare in our houses from time to time. Due to adulteration we are not sure about the quality of these spice powders but generally we buy the branded ones from the reputed shops and feel that we would be getting the genuine product.
I agree that if possible we should make the spice powder in the house itself but that is not an easy work as we have to prepare it from time to time in different proportions.
Another point which is also mentioned by some other members is that we are not getting the raw material itself in unadulterated form and then it does not matter much whether we use the readymade or home prepared spice powder.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
