Not able to view a KC question now

The other day I shortlisted a Knowledge Centre section question for preparation of answer.
For about one or two days I was working on for giving a detailed answer content. After finalizing the answer content today when I visited the KC section, I could not find the answer even after scrolling down for a few pages. I also did a search with the keyword in KC page. Even then I could not see the same question. But I could see a few other questions on the same topics which were not there earlier.

Shall I assume that the original question which I saw the previous day was removed and some amended questions were brought in?

If so that will put difficulties for the people who start working on the question.
In the present case I had spent about more than one and half day on the preparation, drafting ,reviewing and finalizing.

Does any other member have such experience?

I am checking the questions from time to time and trying to draft an answer quickly say one day but not submitting it as I myself find it of low quality. I have wasted a few attempts like that but the said question did not disappear like that.
Probably it could only happen when a particular question is redundant and is removed by the editor and the timing coincided with our efforts of preparing an answer to that.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

What was the topic about? Can you a give a link to the similar topic which you found? I don't think a question will disappear as such. As Neeru has suggested, it may have been removed being duplicate.

It would be better if one is specific while raising this type of queries.

Saji Ganesh @ #779343, the question I viewed and shortlisted for answer preparation was : 'Career scope and salary in India for a BHMS '
I did not copy the URL but just copied the title for my answer preparation. But even when I searched by copying in the full question also I did not se the referred question. Hence I posted the thread as I did not want my work to go waste.

There are two sections on the Topics display page. The first one is the 'Answer now' section. The second section is 'Trending Topics'. Sometimes the questions from the first section will be shifted to the second section if 1 or 2 answers are posted.
The question ''Career scope and salary in India for a BHMS ' was there yesterday. I answered it and it appears in My Answers and waiting for review by the Editors. One can go to my answers section of me and open that. Just now I have opened and seen. Anyhow, let us wait for the reply from the officials of the site.

    Venkiteswaran,

Here is the page: Career scope and salary in India for a BHMS Graduate

I suggest that henceforth, you save the URL also in the draft that you are preparing, and not just the Topic's title. Later, if at all it does get deleted, then raise a thread and we will check if it was a duplicate or whether there was some other issue that made the editor delete it.

Through this thread, though, as mentioned by you, it seems that the search tool does not work accurately. I typed the Topic title in the search box in the KC as well as the main search box, and on both occasions, it did not show the page. I will bring this to the attention of the admin.

Thank you, Vandana for promptly solving my problem. Noted your suggestions for future help.
You may close this thread if so desired.

Vandana has already taken a note of the issue of 'search' function not displaying the desired topic.
I just want to mention here that when I was using search function for educational information update in ISC database then I was not seeing any KC pages as result in the search result pages. I was a bit surprised by that but assumed it just a technical thing as KC was incorporated recently and the system software might require some modifications in it.
It is good that this point has arisen in the present discussion and I hope the issue will be resolved soon.

    Umesh,

You have made a relevant point. Thank you. I randomly typed text in the main search box, but only a couple of the search pages indicated a KC Topic page. Most pointed only towards the articles or courses section. I will bring this to the notice of the admin.

I also had the same issue of not getting the expected search results in KC section. Even today the expected question ( to answer preparation) did not show up in search result. Moreover, I could not get some of my earlier posts, which I wanted to give as back link, on a particular topic, which I remember having posted under Ask Experts and/or in forum.

    Venkiteswaran,

About finding your earlier posts to give a backlink-
In every section, we have the feature to locate our own content through the 'My...' feature next to the 'Shown by Status'. Thus-
    Forum: My Threads, My Answers
Ask Experts: My Questions, My Answers
Knowledge Centre: My Topics, My Answers
    Articles: My Articles
    Jobs: My Job Posts
    Reviews: My Posts
    Learn English: My Posts

It is only in the sections of schools, colleges, universities, courses, and training institutes that this feature is not there. In the case of the section of Practice Tests, if you tried out one of them, you can find it under the blue button 'My Entrance Test' at the bottom of the screen.

I have used this 'My...' feature very often to locate my posts quickly when I wish to check something in the text I already submitted or, like you, to find it to give it as an internal link. I know that when we have been contributing for over a decade with such a ton of content, it may not be easy to locate a specific post. In that case, what I do is type the keywords and put the plus sign with my name. For example, when I wanted to locate an old article I wrote on a career related to sports, but could not remember even the exact type of career, I typed "sports career+Vandana" and found the article on a career as a sports medicine doctor after MBBS.

From my conversations with the admin., it seems that since the search tools are Google ones, their algorithms come into play. Hence we may not see certain content as per the algorithm. Perhaps we need to double our efforts to contribute better content to make it relevant for the search engine to consider.

Thanks Vandana for the follow-up and positive responses. I also try all these methods. It may be that I am not able to exactly remember the keywords for forum posts. Anyway the suggestions can be of help to many members and help for more content ostings.

  • #779391
Vandana, I agree that to get reflected in Google search results we have to improve the quality of our contents in the various sections including KC.
That is well understood and no discussion on that.

Now I have an observation. The volume of content in Article, school/college information, Ask Expert, and Forum sections is much much larger as compared to the recent one that is KC and that could be a reason that we do not see more KC pages in the search results until and unless the quality is exceptional. What is your experience about this 'volume' factor?

    Knowledge is power.

  • #779401
    Umesh,

I do not think the search issue has to do with the amount (volume) of content in the section. From what I have been reading online, Google search will show up content which has good keywords, and good length content that is informative and keeps the reader within the page for a long time (it is called 'dwell time').

Let us take an example from the KC section. Suppose there is a Topic about the best MBA institutes for an HR specialization. If a member just gives a list of institutes, the reader will just skim through it and go away from the site. On the other hand, a response with not just a list but informative content about each institute - the HR syllabus, the fee, and, most importantly for a student, the placement possibility - will keep the reader on the page for a longer time + the keywords used with backlinks in good length text will surely catch the eye of Google's algorithm.

Then there are the Topics themselves. A Topic with keywords that have a higher search volume will get good traffic. An example is a comparison between two colleges, such as, "X vs Y - which is better for an M.Tech. in Data Science?" That, along with a response that explains why one is better than the other in terms of the quality of the curriculum, the internships, the faculty, and, again, placement, will be beneficial for ISC. 'Placement' I think is a very good keyword to use. Similarly, a topic comparing two specific career options after completing a particular course, explaining the pros and cons of each career option, may get better traffic than giving a general list of career options. Another example- A Topic on studying abroad would be good if specifics are given about what exactly is taught, and, more importantly, work options in that country after completing the particular course as that is what students really want to know and not just information about the university and course. Even a Topic on admissions can get better traffic if a few keywords are used, like "XYZ University ABC Course – Eligibility, Fees, Placement".

Hence we need to make an effort to improve on content. Put in good-length content that is very informative and comes across as done analytically after a good research on the topic. The reader will then be impressed and is likely to return frequently to seek information on other topics.

I am not an expert on such matters and don't understand the stuff about algorithms, but this is my perspective after having learned through ISC a little about SEO.

Though the discussion started with why KC pages were not seen in the search results when we searched something in ISC but now it has become an interesting discussion on how to improve our content in ISC. Useful suggestions.

  • #779404
Vandana, thanks for your elaborate explanation about the matter. You have given some tips for creating better contents and attract users to it.
It is true that Google algorithm goes on changing but whatever it is it cannot ignore high quality content. Let us all try that.

Vandana, thank you for educating all of us and your suggestions are very useful for improving our answers for the topics in the Knowledge Centre. When we have to submit an answer in the KC section it takes a lot of time to compile the data. That is making us more informative. That is why we are getting much knowledge about the topic and related areas. All members will benefit from your suggestions.
