Tattoo is a very old custom in some societies but in last few decades it caught the fancy of people especially the celebrities who got their arms or back tattooed with various designs and feel different from others. Generally the colour of tattoo ink is blue or black.
We have seen some sportsmen also having tattoo on their wrist, arm, or near neck. It is not only a fashion statement today but people use it as an identity symbol. Some people do not use images for the tattoos on their body. They instead write some word or name of a beloved person.
I do not have any interest in tattoo. I consider it as unnecessary activity to get a tattoo engraved on our arm or neck.
However it is a source of employment to the people who are engaged in the business of making tattoos on the bodies of the people who desire and like it.

I first saw a tattoo on my grandmother's forehead. It was a small one akin to a 'thilak'. Then I had seen many men and women with tattoos on their hands, mostly on upper wrist or upper hand, like vaccination marks. My grandmother told me then that tattooing was common in olden days and done to ward off evil eye and prevent illness to children. I had seen people(mostly women) of certain communities visiting homes with some special thorns and needles and herbal and charcoal pastes for tattoo pricking. The sight of the thorns and needles itself used to scare me. So I had not done tattoo on me.

But the gaudy colourful tattoos I am seeing only much later, first in magazines and now in TV and social media sites. Till now I have not met any such tattooed person except seen in pictures.

I have not tattooed and somehow I have a dislike to it especially the gorgeous and gaudy tattoos sported around by the celebrities.

In the olden days, when somebody was unconscious, people used to heat a nail and put it on the forehead. Immediately, the person used to come into consciousness. My grandfather had this mark on his forehead throughout his life. Permanent skin tattoos have been in practice in India for more than a century. The ancient maze-like designs belonging to 1000 B.C. were discovered on rocks by scientific studies. Later on, they were adopted as permanent marks on the body parts by some tribals in our country. These tribals had their own unique identity often by a prominent tattoo. Initially, these tattoos were used as a symbol of memory of beloved people those are passed away.
This tribal art has been revived by many modern artists. Nowadays having a tattoo has become fashionable. The names of lovers. Initially, these tattoos were seen only on hands. But nowadays we see them in many other parts of the human body.
I have no interest in having tattoos on my body. None of my family members had tattoos so far.

Members have contributed good information on tattoos and we all are benefited with that.
I am not attracted to these images on our skins and somehow have a disliking for them. I do not know how that can be called a fashion symbol or things like that.
One thing is there that some people have an identity crisis and they want to show themselves different from others. In that circle of desire they opt certain unique or conspicuous things and I believe tatto is one of that. Wearing worn out jeans, unique hair styles, unusual clothes, etc are some other examples of covering up one's identity crisis.

Well, I don't have any tattoos and I hate tattoos drawn on bodies. I feel it is an unnecessary thing that is being marked on the arm and neck usually but it can be drawn on other parts as well. Though it has become a trend, even celebrities mark tattoos on their bodies to look different and invite people's attention. I have seen some people draw tattoos on their faces and badly disfigure them unnecessarily.
This is a trend that many people follow and if I'm not wrong, tattoos can't be rubbed out in case anyone wants to wipe out these tattoos. I think the Almighty has already created humans beautiful and to make them more beautiful one needs to become good in terms of character and modesty. A person's kindness is more fascinating than tattoos drawn on his or her body. Better avoid such things and live a simple life.

I do not have a tattoo on my body. I feel that should not be the point of identity. My friend has a tattoo. When we were students, teachers used to scold us when we would draw some mehandi designs using pens on our palms. At the same time teachers themselves draw stars on the hands of kindergarten students to motivate and encourage them. It is the purpose which is behind it, rather than just a piece of symbol.

I feel that tattoos are not going to help us anyway. It will just remain on our body.

Sharada, it is nice that you brought the Mehendi aspect in your response. Yes, Mehendi is a great art in itself and it is our cultural tradition also. It is a fine art decorating the palms or hands. It requires skill to create good designs in it.
Tattoo on the other hand has no element of fine arts behind it. People just get it in whatever way they want it and it does not look ornamental from any angle.

Having Mehandi is a fancy for many ladies in India. In some areas, even gents will also have this Mehandi on their hands. Getting mehandi leaves, grinding them and applying them on the hand gives a lot of pleasure to ladies. Nowadays we are getting ready-made mehandi cones and many use them. But applying organic mehandi directly prepared in our houses from the leaves is healthy and good for skin, many say.

Most of the rich guys are in the habit of tattooing on the different parts of their bodies such as necks, arms, and chests to attract others. Though this appears as a new trend to attract the crowd, it is a costly affair apart from time -consuming.
Copying others to remain attractive is not a wise decision. Once such a habit develops, the persons would like to have more tattoos on their bodies and even they would like to replace the images of the old impressions.
Hence why go in for such impressions which, itself, is a time-consuming process and getting no sensation ultimately?
