How do they know such sensitive information?

My wife and I have planned to go abroad. We had applied for the UK Visa through an authorised agency. We had already submitted all documents online. There is a standard procedure of meeting them facecto face which we did.

The courier identified was Blue Dart. The service delivery boy called up saying that he would come. Within the next few minutes, I received another call in Tamil from another number. The person identified himself as a person from the courier office. Since they were about to deliver the document, I did not suspect this fellow. He just asked for the tracking number. Since everything was done by my son, based in Mumbai, only he knew the tracking number. I just mentioned the number given by the agency, and the instruction was that I need to give the slip if the delivery person asked for it.

There was another call from the same number,, but this time a person spoke in broken English with a heavy English accent. He also asked me for the tracking number but I grew suspicious and did not entertain him.

Within two seconds, I received a message on my WhatsApp s up, asking me to open a link and pay Rs 5. I opened the link and smelt a rat, as they wanted several details. I just hang up.

Within another five minutes another lady rang up, with a particularly pronounced Hindi accent and butler English asking me to pay just Rs 5 and it is compulsory. I told her that I had already contacted the crime branch police and they would get back to her.

The conversation ended as she hang up. They tried to call me from the same number, but I did not accept any call.

The key point is: how do the fraud guys get all such details as my phone number? The Blue Dart courier people asked me to be careful, and that was the end of it. I just blocked the number.

Members may also note such frauds and complain to the crime branch.

A good number of people are engaged in cyber frauds and they have the phone numbers as well as email of the people. They also login in various sites using some fake username and passwords and watch the transactions happening. They do it wherever they can enter in the system. Then starts the phone calling or messaging through email or Facebook or WhatsApp and they will try to take advantage by talking about that transaction and cheat the person in one way or other.
Some of these people are having good knowledge of networking, internet, and mobile telephone settings and frankly speaking they know much more than the people like me and you.
There are some malicious apps which can read the SMS in our phone and find out many things that we are doing using our phones.
As soon as such a thing happens we must block that number and inform the cyber cell in our area.

    Knowledge is power.

These days we are hearing many cyber crime cases and many people are losing money also. Once my brother got a phone call and asked home about some information. My brother was in a meeting and hurriedly he conveyed the information. Within five minutes somebody used his credit card and spent Rs.30000/-. Immediately he informed customer care of that credit card bank and stopped further usage. Then through my brother's son, he was able to contact the vendor where this card was used and informed them about the fraud stopped delivery of those goods and got his money back,
So one should be very careful. Nowadays wherever we go, our mobile number is being asked and we are forced to give it. So many people are coming to know about our number and we are getting many promotional calls. So getting a phone number is not very difficult these days I feel.

What the author has revealed is indeed happening we all should be alert in case get a call from a stronger. Tracking a person for an investigation is not all difficult for them since the fraudsters have the expertise to reach us through different apparatus including whats app. Once we fall prey to those antisocial people, they would go on calling us till they get their due share.
Though we can complain to cyber police to arrest the activities by the time we reach them, we would have lost a substantial amount of money by way of fulfilment of their demand.

Internet is a huge place and we use it for various tasks including online banking and shopping. Though these sites boast of full security but we do not know what is happening to our actions and who is stealing our data online. Our mobile numbers and emails are no secret and easily available online to the miscreants. As other members have also mentioned these cyber criminals are very intelligent and understand the things in much far better ways than us.
Everyday so many malicious emails and phone calls are coming to us and we have to simply block them. Even if we entertain one of them it could lead us to problems.
A few months back I got an email from my bank to update my email address and for that it wanted me to go a page which did not belong to the bank. When I checked with bank they told me that I should ignore such messages. It looked very genuine as bank logo, colour, etc everything was similar to the other messages that really came from the bank.
Too many cases of frauds and cheating are happening online and I do not know how the cyber security people are going to tackle this menace.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
