Do you have interest in cooking? Ever tried a new dish?

Many people have interest in cooking. Earlier it was the field of house makers but now many males also have started participating in cooking activities whether it is the routine dishes or some new dish for which recipe is already available in the internet. Today in some sites we get step by step preparation videos for the dishes and a person having basic cooking knowledge can follow that and prepare the new dish.
Have you got interest in cooking? Do you prepare only the basic routine dishes? Or you have tried some new dishes also? Please share your experiences.

Yes, I have interest in cooking. I do it at home for need and as well as for time-pass. I have written in various relevant contexts in this forum that I happily and voluntarily share household chores in my home- including cooking.

As a kid and even now my son relishes and appreciates my cooking. Whenever more amount of cooking is needed (when guests are to arrive or during festivals) my wife needs my presence beside her, as that only gives her the confidence. I will be the 'director of cooking' then. In fact, the quantity and mixing of vital ingredients are to be done by me only.
I can cook not only the routine snacks and meals with routine dishes, but even sweets and desserts too. I can prepare North Indian and South Indian items. To be frank even today morning I had made the Tomato-Onion Chutney for morning breakfast Dosa, in a jiffy.

Cooking is my passion but I cannot devote my time to this passion fully since my wife being a homemaker remains in this activity most of the moment. Hence I get time to showcase my skills only when she feels tired or on some occasions when she expects a different variety of preparations on some non-veg items. I take this opportunity to show my skills in how and when the ingredients are put and to what quantity in relation in about to spices, tomato and onion.
I agree that with the same ingredients, there are veteran cooks who would offer you a tangy dish with their expertise. This develops with the experience of a cook.
However, I feel relaxed due to the encouraging response of my wife every time I serve dishes as suggested by her. Apart from that she highly speaks of my proficiency related to cooking to her friends. This makes me more pleased.

When I was in my college doing UG course, I learned cooking from my mother who not only taught me the art of basic cooking but encouraged me to try new dishes.
During that time I developed my liking for cooking and even helped my mother whenever she desired so.
Learning cooking at that stage itself helped me a lot and I was able to manage the kitchen independently after my marriage. I realised that knowing cooking was a great advantage for a woman because if she is not working out then husband relies on her only for all the cooking and managing the household matters.
For quite some time I continued learning the preparation of new dishes and as advised by some of our friends, I started writing recipes and sending them for publication in some reputed magazines. At that time getting a recipe published in a magazine was considered an achievement and one also got good remuneration for that. Anyway, I got some of them published and was happy on my achievement.
Now my cooking activities are limited to routine cooking and I am not spending any time on learning and experimenting on new recipes.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

I was cooking daily when I was doing my PhD. I used to stay with my cousin and we started cooking. We used to make a special curry with tomato. We used to do it frequently as it is very easy to make. We stayed together for about 3 months. Then my aunt joined and she took up the job of cooking. But we used to help her. After marriage also I used to cook once in a while when the necessity arises. I used to cook for at least three days a month. But now I stopped cooking completely. No necessity is also coming.
Now in our house, my wife and my two daughters-in-law are there and they share the responsibilities. So the need is not there. But sometimes my elder son tries cooking special items like Biryani, fried rice etc. He loves cooling.
In our Indian history also some names of males are only mentioned but not females. Bhima and Nala are supposed to be the best cooks.

Let me also add my experiences in the matter. During my student life I was not directly associated with any cooking in our house as my mother did not allow us to do that. But I was asked to do many miscellaneous jobs in the house indirectly related to cooking. For example, I used to prepare the coal stove and start fire in it as that took some time in coal igniting. That time we did not have any cooking gas or other modern electric appliances for cooking, and we depended on coal stove, wood stove, and sometime on kerosene. Apart from that I occasionally helped my mother in chopping the vegetables or peeling the onions and potatoes.
It was only when I left my hometown and went to another town for my PG course that I was forced to start full-fledged cooking on my own as I was not able to take outside food due to health reasons. I learned all the basic cooking and I got another student to share room with me and as he was also knowing cooking, so we managed it smoothly.
Once I got a job and was stabilized in my career, I spared some time for learning new dishes and due to that interest, I could learn a good number of Indian dishes and can make them comfortably. Nowadays, I am not learning anything new but about 2-3 times a week I am preparing vegetables or some snacks myself keeping my old interest alive.

    Knowledge is power.
