Let me also add my experiences in the matter. During my student life I was not directly associated with any cooking in our house as my mother did not allow us to do that. But I was asked to do many miscellaneous jobs in the house indirectly related to cooking. For example, I used to prepare the coal stove and start fire in it as that took some time in coal igniting. That time we did not have any cooking gas or other modern electric appliances for cooking, and we depended on coal stove, wood stove, and sometime on kerosene. Apart from that I occasionally helped my mother in chopping the vegetables or peeling the onions and potatoes.
It was only when I left my hometown and went to another town for my PG course that I was forced to start full-fledged cooking on my own as I was not able to take outside food due to health reasons. I learned all the basic cooking and I got another student to share room with me and as he was also knowing cooking, so we managed it smoothly.
Once I got a job and was stabilized in my career, I spared some time for learning new dishes and due to that interest, I could learn a good number of Indian dishes and can make them comfortably. Nowadays, I am not learning anything new but about 2-3 times a week I am preparing vegetables or some snacks myself keeping my old interest alive.
Knowledge is power.
