How should an honest boss cope up with such a situation?

We all talk about corruption in our country whether it is in Govt offices or private organisations. It is said that corruption can be minimised and contained but cannot be eradicated. The reason for that is that some people are greedy and will do anything to earn some extra bucks.
Whenever an official can do a favour or oblige the customer or favour the person going there for some work, there is scope of corruption but everyone is not corrupt. There are a few who are misusing their powers and making illicit money and general public feels that every official is corrupt.
Now sometimes an honest person is made head of an organisation or its unit and he does not allow anyone to do any wrong thing and make money out of that. It is natural that some of the dishonest subordinates will not be happy with such a boss and will create problems for him right from creating trouble in the workplace to build political pressure on the boss and getting him transferred to some other place or unit.
How the honest boss should cope up with such a situation? Should he close his eyes from the corrupt practices or deal with these people firmly? What do you think?

That is true. It is very difficult for an honest boss in government services to manage corrupt subordinates. If the boss is corrupt and the subordinate is honest also, there will be a problem between them. I heard that in some government offices rates are fixed for each work and the amount realised will be shared as per the percentages decided among them based on their rank. In this process, if an honest boss is not accepting his share probably that share also will get distributed among other employees. If a senior person is honest, his bosses from political circles will make him suffer by transferring frequently to other places. The root cause for this corruption is a common man only and politicians are taking this attitude of a common man as a chance. As we want some favours we are going to politicians and government officers and that is making them take advantage.

In my view an honest boss, if he is bold enough, will reduce the corruption in the department and the subordinates will be fearing in accepting the bribe because if they are caught, the boss is not going to protect them.
I have seen some such honest people who have improved the working of their departments and are instrumental in reducing corruption.
As Dr Rao has clearly mentioned, I also agree that there are some politicians who can create problems for these honest bosses and trouble them by transferring or trapping them in some case where they have no hand. This happens often in our system but bold and honest do not bother for it and many times even the corrupt politicians do not confront them.
It is also true that the ideal system is where boss and subordinates all are honest but that is seldom the case.

It is an interesting article. The system of working in the industry has taken a new turn where the bosses adopt a double standard in their approaches. They would highlight the safety aspect of their departments as the best ones, even if the fulfilment of the target is the planning set by the organisation.
The other face of the boss is not exposed to all the employees of the section but with the connivance of a group of employees, the boss is indulged in a corrupt practice taking extra money from the party for producing a premium product as desired by him. A part of such a fund is enjoyed by some loyal workers of the boss. This type of dual behaviour is not uncommon. The employers are not against such executives since such bosses meet the objectives of the company.

Only a boss with spine, integrity to the nation and to his job, commitment to the public and with no greed for money or positions will be able to tackle such situations. He must be able to stand straight and face any consequences if he has to fight against political clouts and political interventions. We have had many such officers who had the guts to say and do what is right and legal only despite pressures from various quarters. We have also heard of people holding senior positions resigning their jobs because they don't want to be part of the game and are not in a position to change the system. It is an individual choice and one can either hold on to his principles or can bend himself and swim with the flow or can bid goodbye and have his own way.

As rightly observed in the responses above, political leaders are the ones who, most of the time, use their connections and power to influence/ coerce employees to take the wrong path. Trade unions of different parties exercise so much influence that they can make it hell for a person who doesn't tow their line. It is not easy for one to hold on to his principles and be morally correct always.

Corruption is not all about taking bribe. It has different means and methods. An officer or even a clerk who does his job without surrendering to influences, bribes or threats will be singled out and ostracized. An employee who is brave enough and has a strong will power can overcome such issues if he can show that he will not succumb come what may. As I said, it is not easy, due to the different tactics including complaints of misbehavior with lady employees, but not impossible too.
