A business that has no recession

There are too many layers in the Indian market in the food business. If not anything else, the food business in the vegetarian variety is booming everywhere. When my wife and I visited the lovely city of Vizag, we were directed to the famous Subbiah Gari vegetarian restaurant. The hygiene, the food everything was simply world class.

To our surprise, the local tourist taxi driver who took us to many places, also showed us many smaller restaurants and each of these also had good crowds. There were the roadside shops as well. It turned out to be that there is a massive segmentation of the entire market, but the overall market is growing. My friends in distant Ranchi or Indore or even in places like Trivandrum tell me that the market is booming in their cities as well.

Even on a conservative estimate, there could easily be at least five crore Indians directly and indirectly into this business and is bound to grow to greater heights in the next few years. and that is for sure. What is your experience and observation?

I would request the author to modify the title because the meaning of the word recession is defined in dictionaries like - recession is a significant, widespread, and prolonged downturn in economic activity. Recessions are commonly characterized by two consecutive quarters of negative gross domestic product (GDP) growth, though there are more complex ways to assess and classify downturns.

The author has given a good detail about the food industry in our country and positive future growth. Yes that is happening and there are many enablers for that. People are often going out for eating, the earnings of middle class and upper middle class are increasing, a variety of food items are available in the market, for everyone there is affordable food available. In my area a plate of Upma is available from Rs 20 to 150 depending upon the level of the shop. However, I found the 'Rs 20' one equally tasty.

The number of eateries are mushrooming especially in tourist locations and this industry is going to grow in leaps and bounds.

That is true. In Hyderabad also we see many such small food vendors on the side and they do excellent business. There are many hotels on wheels. The food will be made in a van by stopping it on the roadside and supply hot to customers. These days we are seeing many such moving hotels. There are many pulling cart outlets also and they supply breakfast at a cheaper rate and many people eat and go for their work. As mentioned by the author crores of business is happening in this segment. Such people manage their families with the profit they are getting in that business.
There are many branded hotels in each city of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and in addition to that there are small restaurants where people get tasty food at a lower cost. Recently I have seen milkshake-supplying carts also in all towns by the name Faluda. These businesses are helping small people to make their living.

The mushrooming of the eateries of all sorts ranging from roadside to high class dining restaurants is a clear sign that the demand of these joints is increasing as people are more and more going out for taking their snacks and food outside the house. This has given a good opportunity to the unemployed youths for choosing a particular food for quick sale through a small stall.

In earlier days, people used to eat in the house only and rarely go out to eat. Now the trend has changed. Both wife and husband are going to the office and are not finding time to cook in the house. During the weekends they go out to enjoy themselves. So people eating out increased, which paved the way for these restaurants, small eating points, etc. Ordering food from outside is the order of the day. These are the reasons for the success of such businesses, I feel.

In many families husband and wife both are working. They live in a nuclear family where little children are to be put in some day care or at the mercy of maid. If they have a servant for cooking then it is alright otherwise 2-3 days in a week they would go for eating out or get it delivered to their house. This has become very common and food supply platforms like Swiggy or Zomato are doing brisk business. Whenever there is a demand then supply is created quickly as the business interests of some entrepreneurs are met. So the food outlets are increasing everywhere whether it is a town or big city.
In our area there is a middle class exclusive momo restaurant and on weekends there is much rush there. People stand out and wait for some table to get vacant. First time I am seeing such a situation here that people are waiting outside.
I agree that this business is going to flourish in future and will provide jobs to many youngsters.

Food business was and is a perennial business. The major change is that now(like in many other sectors) the business is taken over and run under franchise arrangements by major corporate business houses or multinationals. There is another (sometimes disturbing) trend of even some surreptitious or camouflaged individuals and organizations with certain common interest running such business like chain links on highways and even second level cities.
The front may all be very attractive. But he background reality and hygiene may be quite different. Many worrying reports come often in media in that regard.( I do not say all are like that, there may be some really good, genuine and hygienic affordable food business outlets too)

'Home made' is the most commercialized and exploited term in food business now.

Yesterday evening when I was returning from the nearby market, I observed something that I must mention here. I saw that earlier also but that time I did not think about that so deeply.
What I observed was that along the stretch of the market about 500 meters long on the pavement about a gap of 50 meters each there were food sellers selling the food to the people. They have placed a small table on which there were a few steel containers each filled with some vegetable or dal and then some chapatis and rice was also there in two big containers. A lot of people were buying the food and taking it in the packets. I was told that these sellers do it for 2-3 hours and then disappear.
They are doing a good business and people are getting food in reasonable prices. What else we want?

From the above discussions it is evident that food business is growing in leaps and bounds. Small eateries or roadside food stalls are emerging everywhere satisfying the customers.
A few months back one restaurant has been opened in our area and it is doing good business. It is one of the most costliest restaurant in the town. I was a bit surprised by the crowd that it is pulling up on weekends. On other days also it's occupancy is good.
The only reason for that type of crowd can be that today there are many people who want good quality food and not bother for the cost. So, in our town such people might be in good numbers and coming to this restaurant on weekends. Can we say that it is an indication that the people in upper middle class and above are earning more and also spending more? I do not know how correct my observation is.
But it shows that food industry is looking up in all segments.

The Food Business is growing by leaps and bounds due to multiple reasons. The main reason, I think, is the paucity of time for the working - class to prepare food for the entire family. They need not go too far in search of tasty food, it is available within the vicinity of their residence - hardly 200 meters away.
We need not think how far such items are hygienic since right from the preparation to the end stage, the vendor maintains transparency providing the customers no room for suspicion. They are aware of the fact that their business is dependent on their honest approach and hence they would take their utmost care to woo the customers.
Over time, this business has mushroomed in almost all major cities providing customers with an authentic taste of the different foods - both north and south varieties.
