Why we are so careless during the first rains in our areas?

After the arrival of monsoon and first rains in their respective areas people are happy to get relieved from the hot summer. A great time to enjoy and rejoice.
But during or after the first rains the dust covered roads generally become very slippery and drivers should be very alert and cautious in driving and should control their speeds accordingly. Yesterday on Mumbai-Pune Highway it rained only for 15 minutes but it created havoc as many vehicles slipped on the roads and traffic was jam for 4 hours.
Drivers know it that during the first rains one should be cautious and also in the cities the people driving the scooter and motorcycle are alerted by their family members but alas, the impatience and negligence of this sort costs valuable lives and nothing is left except cries of the family members. Why we are so careless? What do you think about this?

My view on this is that some people are careless and no amount of teachings or sermons can bring any improvement in them. It is an unfortunate thing but is a reality in our society. These people get irritated when we talk about safety with them. Their family members are tired telling them to take care while driving or any such activity. I have seen people driving slowly while going through a crossing but if the lights suddenly change from green to red they will speed up to somehow manage to cross. And that is the time when a policeman runs to them and gives a receipt. I do not understand the psychology of a person who is idling for a long time and wasting all his constructive time in useless activities but while driving he wants to save a few seconds at each crossing and reach the destination a few minutes earlier.
During the first rain it is always advisable to drive slow and take care and not get surprised by the wet and slushy road surface. A little care can save lives.

We are tuned to our style of driving and it hardly changes with the time. However, it does mean that we are not safety conscious. As far as I remember during my journey for shifts, I took sufficient care of the crowd maintaing enough distance to the extent that no collision should occur during my travel.
My cautious approach yielded results but one fateful night when I observed copious rainfall, I saw a man in his scooter almost dashing me due to the failure of his brake due to the heavy rain. The situation was managed anyhow and the accident could be averted.
However, I learnt a great lesson that during the heavy rains, we must take care of attending to our duties along with a colleague of our department or some employee near our department. Such an arrangement provided me with the mental - strength to cope with an unfavourable situation like an unwanted accident.

Yes, heavy rain is another situation when the visibility decreases and there is a lot of inconvenience in driving. I have seen some people parking their vehicles at roadside hotels or dhabas and then proceed ahead only when rain stops or changed to drizzling.

India is a crowded place and traffic is one of the worst in the world with pathetic roads. I usually rely on public transport and I am not at all confident in driving my own vehicle in India. I have some bad experience in my childhood while going to my school on my bicycle which has made be afraid of driving my own vehicle. People usually don't follow traffic rules in India and cattles roam on road without any worries. I almost got killed due to a cow in the middle of the road. It is not an easy place to drive for sure.
    Thanks and regards.

I agree that many of us do not have a traffic sense but we should have safety conciousness. If we are not safety concious then not only we are taking risk of our lives but also other's lives.
Rainy season brings more problems for traffic as driving through waterlogged areas become risky and difficult.
My concern was mainly during the initial days of rains but other days are also equally important.
Many people avoid driving through heavy rains and I think that itself is a good precaution.

I think people may forget the impact of rain when they are experiencing a different atmosphere like a very hot summer and heavy cold. But once they face some inconvenience with rain they take all required precautions.
Two days back my son was about to go to his office. He wanted to go by a two-wheeler as the car may take more time because of heavy traffic on the roads going towards the high-tech city of Hyderabad. He was about to start. I asked him whether his raincoat was there on the motorcycle or not. Then he stopped his bike. He came inside. He took his raincoat and then went to his office. On that, while he was coming back there was a heavy rain and his raincoat came in handy for him. After coming back home. he thanked me and told me but for me, he might have got drenched in heavy rain. I always keep one umbrella in my car even in summer also. It will be useful when I have to go out when it is raining. I always suggest my son not to drive a vehicle when it is pouring heavily. He can take a shelter somewhere and after some reduction in the downpour he can start back.
