What do you prefer in summer, a cooler or AC or simply a fan?

I live in North India and the heat in summers is unbearable. You can't just rely on a fan to have a sound sleep. In rural areas people can sleep on terrace to beat the heat at night but when you are living in cities where there is no place like terrace, it becomes a necessity to buy a cooler or an AC. I don't know why but cooler doesn't seem to work for me while other people in neighbourhood are satisfied with the cooler. I was forced to by an AC because there is no way one can sleep under a hot blower because it will suck each and every drop of water out of your body. Currently, I am satisfied with the cooling but it has made me lazy. Now I don't want to get out of my AC room because outside it is absolutely burning like sensation. How do you beat the heat in summers?

The running cost of AC is quite high otherwise this is the best thing one can have. People are increasingly going to use AC and that is the reason that the peak electricity requirement in our cities is increasing much during the summer.
Once we become habitual of AC we will like to sit there only. One way to resolve that issue is do not keep the temperature very low. What I do is keep it somewhere in the range 28-30 degree centigrade so that when I go out from the room I do not feel the difference much. There are many people who keep the temperature as low as in the range 20-25 degree and then cover themselves with a blanket or quilt. This is ridiculous and waste of electric energy.
Water cooler is another option but there is a problem of increased humidity in the room which many of us cannot tolerate.
Fan is also a way to beat heat but when temperatures increase much, it starts throwing hot air which is not welcome.
Those who can afford for them AC is the best thing.

When we were in Gujarat then we had a separate rented house to live and we used to go to rooftop for sleeping in the night. It was very pleasant and a simple bedsheet was sufficient for taking as cover on the body.
So, we did not need a water cooler or AC that time and managed with fan in day time.
Thereafter when we moved to a apartment then we immediately required a water cooler as there was no facility to go on the rooftop.
That is all long time back and today we are having an AC in one room and we use it but sparingly.
I also find AC as the most comfortable gadget in summer.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Though we are told not to talk about old time practices, they are really valuable ones. In those days it was holidays for schools or colleges during summer and people normally used to visit parents/ grandparents or relatives in villages. In such villages the weather used to be generally pleasant with natural air, natural food (of course food pattern differs in some cases) and bathing in huge wells, water tanks, ponds lakes or rivers. The buildings were also constructed in such a manner to regulate the temperatures inside the house.

But now we all prefer to stay in cities or towns in concrete jungles, there is no option to seek other than air-conditioners or fan or air cooler.

During my childhood, I was living in a village and we had no electricity in our house. We used to sleep in the open year inside the house. We were having folding cots. We used to use these cots for sleeping. 5 cots daily we had to carry from inside to the open area and again in the morning we used to fold them and bring them back into the house. That was a big exercise those days.
But now we are not able to sleep without an AC. But the issue is my wife doesn't want AC throughout. She will be on the AC for 15 or 20 minutes and she switches off AC. We will switch on the Fan. Then after some time again, I will switch on the AC. This cycling will happen almost throughout the night. Many people these days prefer AC only. Eventhough we switch on the Fan the breeze we get will not be cool and we will not feel the comfort. So AC is anybody's first choice in our house. The second choice is an Air cooler and the last is a fan. But AC will be used for two or three months only in a year but a fan is required throughout the year.

Every electrical gadget has its merit or demerit and so is the case with the cooler, fan and AC. The fan is the most convenient way to save electricity since it draws less power in its operation. If the room temperature goes beyond the tolerable limit, we can think of a facility of dual provisions such as operating fan and AC intermittently.
Once the temperature of the room attains the comfortable thermal regime, we can operate our fans for hours switching off our AC. Such a setting works nicely without burdening us considerably on a financial angle.

It is quite interesting how people in India use AC. Most people use it by running for few hours to get the moist air out of the room and then fan takes over. I also do it because running AC for long time chills the room even when temperature is kept to 24 to 26 degrees. It helps in reducing the power consumption and also there is no need to use blanket.
    Thanks and regards.
