T20 Cricket World Cup has started and there are 25 teams contesting in it and 5 teams are kept each in 4 groups A to D. The matches commenced from 2nd June 2024 and so far India has played 2 matches and has won both (against Ireland and Pakistan).
One interesting thing is that team from United States of America is also in the fray. It has even won 2 matches so far.
Members having interest in this World Cup may share their observations and specific comments in this thread. I request all to contribute their views only in this thread and not float a new thread to avoid duplication.

Thank you Neeru Bhatt for floating a thread on the T20 World Cup. I will follow your suggestion and place my comments only in this thread instead of floating a new thread.
In this World Cup, India and Pakistan are in the same group. The USA is also in the same group. So far this USA team played two matches and won both. The USA team appears like an Indian team only as about 8 Indians are playing in this team. All these 8 are Indian-born but settled in the USA, I think. India and the USA teams won two matches and they are in the top two places in this list of that group. Pakistan played two matches and unfortunately lost both matches. Now it has to improve its performance. Otherwise, it may not be in the top 8 countries and may not reach the Super Eight stage.

In all the matches so far players are low-scoring matches only and the pitches are not helping batsmen. I understand the pitches are from Australia. Yesterday night the match between IND and Pak was very interesting. At one stage chances for Pakistan were improved a lot. But our bowlers showed their commitment and brought victory to us.

On 9th June 2024, during the match between India and Pakistan, our bowler Jasprit Bumrah put up a magnificent performance by taking 3 wickets giving only 14 runs. He was declared player of the match.

This world cup is unique in the sense that USA is first time co-hosting these matches along with West Indies. Another thing is a good number of twenty teams participating.

The current T20 World Cup is bit boring because there are too many one-sided matches. It is because of the minnow teams that aren't able to perform up to the level of international standards. Only USA performing good enough to beat a better side like Pakistan. Better matches will come up in the latter part of the tournament when weak teams will be out.
    Thanks and regards.

  • #780110
Almost all the matches are low-scoring and there are no big scores. Bowlers are dominating the matches and not many fours and sixes. This also may be making the matches boring. India won over the USA and they are sure of their berth in the Super Eight. Similarly, Australia also made it into the Super Eight.

    Babu,

I don't think that it is that boring or that they are one-sided. Some of the associate nations' teams are giving the established teams a run for their money. Look at where England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka are in their respective groups. See where Scotland is! Even the Men in Blue did not have easy matches. Our batsmen have not fared too well overall, and our fielding needs to improve, especially if we are going to be up against Australia in the first match of the Super Eight round.

If members are interested, we can have the MAP (Make A Prediction) activity for India's games from the Super Eight round onward. For those who have not participated earlier, this is simply predicting by answering a list of queries. You will get 1 point and 1cc for a correct prediction with double that if all predictions are accurate, and no negative marks for an inaccurate prediction.

    Dr Rao,

A match is not unexciting merely because of a lack of high scores. A tight low-scoring match can keep you on the edge of your seat, too! In fact, for once I think in this T20 World Cup it is the bowlers who matter rather than the big hitters.

  • #780119
The matches are becoming exciting because these are low-scoring matches. Although the newly-made pitches in the USA are behaving erratically, the bowlers are getting benefits out of such erratic behaviour of the pitch. In this T-20 World Cup, we can say that this is not a batsman's game. I prefer this.

Those who think that batsmen hitting each ball to score runs is great cricket, don't understand the game properly.

I like the proposal made by the Managing Editor. It will be interesting if a Make A Prediction ( MAP) activity for India's games from the Super Eight round onward is announced. I think many members may come forward and participate in the same.

I have seen many small shopkeepers and vendors taking much interest in T20 World Cup and if you ask them they quickly tell who won yesterday and how was India doing. So, I think there is good interest in the cricket fans and sports sites are also covering it in more details.
I would also welcome a MAP contest on the current cricket matches going on in this World Cup.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

  • #780135
    Vandana Madam,

T20 has its own flavour and Test cricket has its own. Low scoring thrillers are welcome but teams getting allout for 39 and 75 tells the nature of the pitches in the US. T20 is slam bang cricket and it will remain so because crowds love watching ball fly all over the stadium. Traditional cricket lovers love watching test cricket because it offers a better competition between bat and ball.

Talking about the T20 World Cup 2024, I think Pakistan, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka will not reach the next stage. Some associate nations like USA and Afganistan might make it to the next round. It will be a world cup of suprises for sure.

    Thanks and regards.

  • #780137
Babu Sir has opined: "T20 has its own flavour......." That is the precise reason why I don't watch T-20 cricket. Most of the people enjoy fielding restrictions, extremely harsh wide ball rules against the bowlers, peculiar no-ball rule giving an extra ball in which the batsman won't be out, bouncer rule, fours and sixes, and dancing of scantily dressed women.

This is not cricket. This is cricket circus.

I was scared in the match between India and Pakistan as Pakistan was playing well till 12 overs, and I had a feeling that they would win the match. At that moment, I switched off the TV and slept, but when I opened the news, as I was curious in the morning, I was thrilled because India won that match because of good balling. Every baller did well to snatch victory from Pakistan. Now that Pakistan is out of the tournament, they must be cursing their players performance against the US, which is the main reason for their exit from the tournament. As the tournament progresses, it is becoming more interesting. The US team is playing well, and I think they will reach the semifinals this time. This time, there are greater chances for India too, as the team is playing well. It's sad to see that yesterday's match was abandoned.

With most of the matches in Florida getting abandoned due to rain, it was already known Pakistan would never make it to the Super 8s. SL and NZ will also get eliminated from the tournament. Teams like Afganistan and Bangladesh have made it to the next stage.

By looking at the 8 teams I can say that England, Australia, SA, and India are going to be the semi finalists. Final will be between Australia and India. I hope India wins this T20 World Cup to make up for their ODI world cup final loss against Australia in Ahmedabad.

    Thanks and regards.

  • #780202
Afghanistan has already made it into the next stage. India, Australia, the USA, South Africa, the West Indies, and England are also in the next stage. Either the Netherlands or Bangladesh will be the eighth country. That will be known tomorrow. New Zeeland is surprisingly out of the tournament.

India has reached the second round despite India's match with Canada was canceled. It is also important to note that Pakistan has not qualified for the next round.

I am disheartened that Nepal lost its match against South Africa by only one run. I hope Nepal will defeat Bangladesh and Bangladesh will fail to reach the second round.

Now, let us think about India's matches in the second round. The batting performance of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma (albeit partially) is a matter of concern. Indian bowlers are doing well.

All 8 teams are now divided into 2 groups. India, Australia, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are grouped together. In the other group, South Africa, West Indies, England, and USA will face each other. Top two teams from both groups will qualify for the semi final. Let's see who qualifies for the semi finals.
    Thanks and regards.

    Everyone,

Note that each MAP will be announced a day before India plays its match. So the next MAPs will be as follows-
    1. MAP 2 - India vs Bangladesh - 21st June (Friday)
    2. MAP 3 - India vs Australia 23rd June (Sunday)

The MAP threads will be posted as and when I come online, and the predictions should be submitted by midnight of the same day. It is hoped that we get a better response for the upcoming MAPs as the first one got a poor response.

Afghanistan defeated Australia in the Super 8 match yesterday and now things have become interesting. If Australia loses against India, they might face elimination. It will all depend on the Afghanistan and Bangladesh match if Australia loses against India.
    Thanks and regards.

  • #780392
Now things have become difficult for India also. Because of the loss of Australia against Afghanistan, India has to wait to get confirmation for its semifinal berth. But chances are pretty as the run rate of India is very high when compared to other teams.

  • #780395
I don't think India's semifinal berth is in doubt since we are heading the Table in the Group due to a better run rate, having defeated Bangladesh by 50 runs.

What is worrisome is the report I read about the possibility of a team teaching the semifinal not reaching the final at all if the weather factor comes into play since no reserve day has been scheduled for the second semifinal, and only an extra 250 minutes of play will be added on, because of no gap between the second semifinal and the final. I think this is ridiculous and unfair to the teams. Why have such a schedule in the first place?! Surely when the dates were on the drawing board, it could have been planned better, with the gap of a day prior to the final.

Sanjeev- I concur with what Wasim Jaffer posted on X-
"Do not disrespect Afghanistan by calling this an upset. Afg are good enough to beat any team on their day. They played to their potential today and defeated a very good Aus team. A fact that should be celebrated. Congratulations and well played"

The Blue Tigers have made a name for themselves in the sport, and nobody takes them lightly. It seems they have won over 70 T20 internationals to date and are no minnows, for sure. It is an applause-worthy victory against a full-strength Australian team and they might just make it to the semifinals.

Afganistan team has come to an advantageous position after defeating Australia.
Now, tomorrow's match is crucial for India and by seeing the team India performance so far, I feel India would win it.

  • #780404
Nowadays Afghanistan team is doing better. Its performance is much better than the performance of the Pak and Bangladesh teams. The margin of India's victory over Afghanistan is less than that of Bangladesh. This will tell us the strength of the Afg team.

Australia won the toss and decided to field first. India is to bat first. It is retaining the same squad for this test also. I don't understand why they are not bringing Jaiswal in place of Sivam Dube. So far Dube has not come up to the expectations. What is there in the minds of team management is not known.

  • #780423
I agree with the point made by Dr. N.V. Srinivasa Rao Sir. What's the point of playing Shivam Dube if he isn't bowling? Virat Kohli has never opened in T20 or any form of cricket but they are forcing him to open. Jaiswal is a talented young batsman and should be opening in T20. There are too many bowlers already in the team. Why they are playing Dube is a mystery.
    Thanks and regards.

Finally, Australia is out of top 4 and Afg has made it. Many times Indian team lost to Australia in the semifinals and finals. But yesterday, the way Rohit made runs can't be described and once they crossed 200 I thought our team would win. But when the Australian top order was batting I was desperate. I thought we lost the match. But Kuldeep did the trick supported by Axar in the field. India eliminated Australia from the top four. It is an occasion to celebrate. I wish all the best to team India in the semifinals and finals. This morning, the Afg team saw that the Aus team would return from the tournament.

Afghanistan lost very badly to South Africa. So the winning country in the 2nd semifinal has to face South Africa in the finals. There is a rain prediction tonight and by any chance, if the match is abandoned India will go to the finals as it has got 6 points in the preliminary matches.

First semifinal was a mismatch with Afghanistan not living up to the expectation. They got allout for just 56, which was chased by South Africa quite easily. Let's see how the second semifinal goes. I hope for a good contest because watching one-sided matches is surely not good for spectators.
    Thanks and regards.

  • #780510
Congratulations to team India for winning the semifinal yesterday. Our bowlers Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav did a good job taking 3 wickets each. Hope India performs well in the finals tomorrow and lifts the cup. All the best.

Finally, India is in the Finals. When India lost the toss I felt that it was a difficult task for India to win. Rohit Sharna and SKY batted very well and their contributions gave some respect to the score India made. But the main credit goes to the Indian bowlers who did a marvellous job.

Yes, India won the T20 World Cup 2024. For me the catch by Surya Kumar Yadav saved India. It was a great catch under pressure and Miller was the danger man in such situation. Congrats team India! Finally after 11 years India has won a World Cup in any form of cricket.
    Thanks and regards.

  • #780584
Thanks to the bowling of Bumrah and Hardik Pandya as well as a brilliant catch by Surya Kumar Yadav, India snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Klaasen and Miller almost took South Africa to victory, but they are 'chokers'.

Although Kohli has been declared Man-of-the-Match, to me, the Man-of-the-Match was Bumrah. He changed the game.

However, after the match, India's two greatest batsmen in T-20, announced retirement from T-20 International matches. Both Kohli and Rohit have announced that the final was their last T-20 International match.

Congratulations, India. Your sons did it. What a victory. Even though Rohit Sharma(9 runs) went early, Kohli took the responsibility and guided India to make the highest score in the World Cup finals. Axar brought the innings back on track with Kohli after losing early wickets.
Indian bowlers struck early and took 2 wickets. Their captain was out for just 4 runs. At one stage, when spinners were bowling on both sides many of us thought that we had lost the match. But our pacers aided by an excellent catch from SKY made the match tilt towards India. In the last over Pandya took 2 wickets and made the Indian flag fly high in the field.
We should congratulate the head coach Rahul Dravid. As a coach, he saw the team reach the finals of the World Cup in all the formats and finally win a cup in the 2024 T 20 World Cup.

I am congratulating the entire team on their victory. The initial stage was disappointing due to the dismal performance of the captain Rohit Sharma when he was out with a constitution of 9 runs. However, it was well managed by Virat Kohli making an excellent score in the World Cup final.
However, in the intermediate stage performance of Akshar Patel was marvellous. Our bowlers showed their excellent performance. The role of Surya Kant Yadava proved to be a game-changer for the entire team.
