Do you think coalition Governments would help in progression of the country?

Election Mandate 2024 has again brought the discussion about Coalition politics as the BJP fallen short of 32 seats to gain the simple majority on its own but as a lead party of the NDA, it returned to power with 294 seats. The two major allies TDP and JDU got 28 seats together. Whether some people may accept it or not - two factors would influence the Indian politics today. The NDA Government could take bold decisions during the last two tenures which contributed to the growth of the country. While the second one is the come back of Congress and other Parties like Samajwadi Party in the UPA should not be underestimated.

In the changed scenario today, do you think coalition Governments would help in progression of the country?

India's experience with rag-tag coalitions definitely proves that progress gets severely slowed down under coalition governments, where no political party has a convincing number and the main party depends on smaller parties. We have observed this in 1977, 1989-91, and then 1996-99, 1999-2004 and finally during 2004-2014. In simple words, the smaller parties resort to blackmailing and force the government to take various steps for their own votes, which are ultimately harmful to the economic health of the country and its people.

This time also, I am apprehending a similar situation. However, I hope that the Prime Minister and his trusted lieutenants will play the game of wit excellently and keep some self-serving coalition partners on tight leash.

A country can make progress in many fronts only when a good party with a strong leader comes in power. By strong leader we mean a person who is concerned for the welfare of all the people of the country as well as wants country to grow and become prosperous. It is not an easy job to do so but an honest and hard working person can achieve that.
Another important condition for growth is that the governance in the system should be good and corruption should be contained. Otherwise even the honest and competent person at the top would fail in delivering.

In a coalition government, there are constraints and the supporting group can anytime withdraw their support. If supporting parties are in tandem with the main party and its leader then there is no problem but that seldom happens.
In essence we cannot hope things to move up with same progress as they happened in last 10 years. This is a reality of a democratic system and we have to accept it.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

A single party failed to get an absolute majority this time in elections. BJP has emerged as the single largest party. With support from TDP and JDU, they are able to make it. So the survival of the government depends on the support they get from other parties in NDA. We saw how Vajpayee resigned as PM because of one MP shortage for the majority. The decisions of the government should have the nod of its friendly parties. Then only they can go ahead. Under these conditions. there will be a slowdown in the development of the nation and the government can't take bold decisions, I feel. The leaders of JDU and TDP are very mature. I feel they may not make an issue out of no issue. We have to wait and see.
The opposition parties should also be responsible and they should cooperate with the government wherever required and protest them when there is a need. However, there will be some slow down will be there in the coming years as the government requires support from its friendly parties.

Honestly speaking I don't think India as a country develops or progresses based on the political alliances. Politics in India is just appeasement and they are not focused towards development. If they were focused India would have been more developed than China. You can compare the way China worked towards becoming one of the top economies in the world while India crawled in terms of GDP growth. No matter what party or alliance rules, they all just want to play their cards to remain in power without doing anything. They are more like the autocracy where tax payer's money is just for luxury of Raja/Maharajas while commoners live like beggars.
    Thanks and regards.

Whenever a party does not get majority then for making a government it has to seek support of allies and it had happened in our country many times in the past. So coalition is not a new thing for us but yes whenever coalition government is ruling the country then it has to work keeping the alliance partners in confidence. So the working becomes constricted to that extent and if there is conflict of interests between the main party and its partners then there is always political danger for the main party. In past we have seen many regimes to be dissolved paving way for others to run the country.
The present government seems to be quite safe from that angle because even if it is formed with a coalition, they have not given any important portfolio to the supporting parties and if that is the understanding between them then the present coalition can complete their term easily.

    Knowledge is power.

Have we not progressed so far under so many coalition governments? I do not know whether it can be answered easily but if it is observed that coalition governments hinder progress then the Constitution has to be amended in such a way that such a situation doesn't arise to form a government with the help of various partners. I mentioned this because the primary objective of any government has to be the progress of the country and if in some situations the progress is halted then a way must be found to alter it. Each one quantifies the progress of the country in various ways and that's why they choose different leaders during elections. I am not sure whether the politics of appeasement, as mentioned by Babu, or caste-based politics, in which every political party indulges, can bring all-round development to the country. Growth-oriented measures must be equally distributed so that the economic division between the rich and the poor decreases and there is a level playing field everywhere. Are we observing it all around us?

We notice blatant appeasement of two 'particular communities' and caste-based politics in the cases of coalition governments where no individual party is strong enough. This hinders the overall progress of the country.
For rapid economic progress for all social strata of people, we need presidential form of government. If that is not possible, single-party majoritarian rule is always preferable.
