Have you ever felt discouraged in the hands of your superiors in your workplace?

People who have worked in workplaces or are currently working in some organisation very well know that today doing a job is full of competition and hard work. There are many people who are performing magnificently and in that situation one has to come up and compete with them.
People have different levels of abilities and skills with them and it is reflected in their performance. While working it also happens that some of the senior level people may not accept the performance of a person citing some reason and finding deficiency in it and discourage him for functioning proficiently.
What is your experience in this regard? Have you ever felt discouraged in the hands of your superiors? What was your reaction to that? Please share your experiences.

I started my career as a laboratory manager and came out of the service as Director of the company. During this journey, I saw many bosses and many subordinates. Overall I have a pleasant journey.
In many instances, I have had good experiences with my superiors. I received awards and rewards from my superiors. Once I went on leave to my native place. In my workplace, a new problem cropped up. When our MD contacted my boss he told me about my leave. Immediately my MD called me and asked whether I could come back immediately and attend to the problem. I obliged him even though I was disappointed as I missed a function in our house. I received a promotion that year. Sometimes our disappointments may become rewarding later on.
When a work is given the person must complete it in time and to the satisfaction of the seniors. But sometimes our performance may not be liked by our bosses. Then it is our responsibility to tell them the way we have approached the problem and how we arrived at the result and we may have to hear the ideas of the boss also. When there is a competition only we will get our best out. If there is no competition our abilities may not be used fully.

I have a long experience of working under various supervisors or head of the departments. Most of the time I found that my boss, whoever was in that position at that point of time, was only interested in getting the job properly and in time. For that either he would encourage or bang me. There was nothing like discouragement in that pattern of relationship between me and my boss.
I never had any situation where my superior discouraged me for doing anything related to the work.

    Knowledge is power.

I have had a working relationship with my various bosses while working in the steel plant. In each department, the officers were given a target to complete the same in a specified time which might be monthly, quarterly or years. The target played an important role in the company. Completion of the target successfully is the essential parameter of maximum growth of the company in terms of revenue generation.
So, we all had to perform our tasks as per the directives of the bosses. My department known as HRCF ( Hot Rolled Coil Finishing ) was responsible for the timely despatch of the finished products in an allotted time through the wagons alloyed to us by the traffic department. Most of the time, I was able to fulfil the target set by the company with the coordination of the traffic department.
Understanding the different bosses of the department was fine and as such I enjoyed timely promotions.

The working environment in Government would be different from Private sector. I observed it may be more in private sector due to internal politics and struggle for existence while in Government service, Central Services in particular, it may not be so. If you confine to your own business, a Government official may not find any problem. State Government working environment is different and depends on the local issues. I have seen in PSUs like HAL and BDL, there is a friendly atmosphere among the officers and staff.

Thanks to the author to point out my superior here. I, as my second employment, worked in a famous public Limited Company consists Factory, administrative office and branches all over India. I started my job there as an Assistant Personnel Officer and later elevated to Personnel Officer. I served there for 24 years. My superior, he never liked to call him as boss or superior, (I used to tell others that he is my senior), a law qualified Post graduate gave full freedom to me to work. That freedom permitted me to take up various tasks as simple and without any second thought I worked there. I travelled almost all parts of our country. He gave me freedom to work, courage to meet any difficult situation without hesitation or fear. He was the head to the Personnel Department and under us there was four more assistants in our department.
In our company no person even senior most officials have no ego and everybody was as family members. Employees in toto were very personal.

I have been working in Central Government for almost 35 years. During this period, I worked with many seniors (and also with subordinates). In Government, a person can manage to work even without joining any group, which may not be possible in the private sector. This is because, in Government, concept of team-building and working in a team may not be fully developed.
Coming back to the topic, I have worked with many different bosses with different characteristics. I have learnt work from them, some of them guided me like friend, some guided me like a true senior, and with some I have had only working relationships. This is indeed an wonderful experience.
