Train collision in West Bengal again after the Odisha train accident

It looks like Indian Railways doesn't care about the life of the passengers. Trains are colliding frequently and people are losing their lives. There should be a reason or explanation of what is happening on the Indian railway tracks and why trains are colliding with each other? Indian railways is the lifeline of India and most of the people in India prefer it as a mode of transportation for long distances. There is no guarantee of safety and security of the passengers after boarding the train. Derailment of trains was common earlier but two trains colliding frequently is a new thing which I think is because of lack of railway staffs. Whatever be the reason they should address the problem very soon.

Yes. Train accidents are to be controlled. When we hear about these accidents we feel sorry for the people who were effected because of these accidents. I understand from a paper statement that because of the collision between the Sealdah-bound 13174 Kanchanjungha Express and a goods train 9 persons died and 46 individuals were severely injured.
Technology is improving and safety systems are introduced which resulted in a decrease in accidents. But within a week when we hear about two accidents, we will feel that incidents are increasing. When we go deep into the investigation of the accident we will observe that human failure is the reason.
Speed trains are getting introduced and more passengers are traveling using trains. Authorities concerned should take all necessary steps and see that no accidents will happen. We should not leave any stone unturned to prevent accidents.

Yes, train accident must be controlled. And for doing this, we need to add railway track (where there are double lines, we need to make it quadruple lines, and so on), improve the track and drastically modernize the signalling system on a continuous basis. But, I have been watching for at least 40 years that different railway ministers, without bothering on these essential aspects, successive railway ministers are only increasing the number of trains, especially in their own states.

I hope that the current railway minister, a well-known technocrat, will look into these aspects to strengthen the safety aspects of Indian Railways.

Indian Railways is a very big department and is run purely in Govt sector. Most of the crossings are not monitored by the guards or caretakers. Everyday a large number of trains pass and a lot of safety measures are taken to prevent accidents. Still due to technical or human errors accidents happen.
By adhering to modern technology and methods Railways is trying to minimise the accidents. There are issues of old lines to be renovated and repaired. Then there are issues of speed limits especially on the bends. The sabotage angle is also there in some of the cases.
It is true that Railways have to improve their safety networks and vigil in the matter and in some accident prone places have to increase the manpower to watch and control these things.
Railway accidents are a great loss of lives and material. This is a segment which is always crowded and very important for transportation of people and material. It is imperative that Railways have to adhere to safety norms as a first priority.

There is a history of train accidents in our country and main reason for it is told as poor safety adherence. It is true that Railway is a big department and has a large number of trains plying daily and it is not an easy task to manage that without any problem. But the point is that if safety is given prime importance then definitely the accidents can be checked and avoided.
It is said that most of the time accidents happen because of mistake of men behind the machine and sometimes these happen because of machine failure. While the machine failure can be tackled with better maintenance, mistakes of men is something that requires changing the work culture of the workforce and that is what the Railways will have to do if they want zero accident record.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
