The problem of clogged drains during the monsoon season

Monsoon season is setting in and we are having rains in the southern part of our country and monsoon clouds are expected to move soon northward.
Rainy season is the season where the municipal and other local authorities have to take many measures and prepare the town to receive the rains. Water stagnation is one of the main problems faced in many towns and main reason for that is clogged drains.
On the sides of the roads generally drains are provided for easy flow of water especially during the rains. Unfortunately in many places these drains are choked up with garbage of varying nature and the municipal workers are not able to clean up that before the rains resulting in the water blockage leading to stagnant water pools creating many problems like water logging, musquito menace, and traffic snarls.
Have you observed such problems in your area or the drains are well cleaned before the monsoon? Please share your experiences.

The author brought out a very pertinent problem for monsoon season. This problem is not confined to one city or one town I think. It is there in the majority of places even in metro cities. A little rain in Hyderabad creates havoc for road travellers. Some of the streets in Hyderabad will get submerged and there will be many manholes which are uncovered. They are very dangerous. The drainage systems are not made properly. A little rain will result in traffic jams and people feel a lot of discomfort.
In addition to the design problems. the people will not have a proper understanding of the problems. They through all waste on roads and they will find their way into the side canals and they will cause hindrances. It Is not only the responsibility of the officials but also the responsibility of the people. They should not through non-biodegradable waste on open roads and see that they will properly dispose of the waste. That is very important

I have lived in different cities across India and most of the places we found this problem of clogged drains which created havoc in the town or city during rains. Whenever it rained the rainwater had no escape to get out of the lanes and roads and water logging was everywhere. Why the municipality or local administration is not able to get those drains cleaned during the winter and summer before the arrival of rains is not understood.
Recently I saw an automatic pump unit mounted on a vehicle which was cleaning a drain in one of the lanes in our town after the complaint was made about it. If such machines are made available everywhere then may be these cleaning tasks could be done quickly.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

I have observed that at some places these drains are open as the overlying lids are damaged or some covers placed to access the drain inside are missing. Many people do not understand the importance of these drains and just push some garbage in it from those openings thinking that it would flow with the water or regular drain water from other sources. But it never happens and that garbage actually clogs these drains.
It is a big problem today and sometimes getting workers for cleaning these drains manually is also difficult as many workers will avoid doing such work.
The best course of action would be to use automated machines by the respective municipalities.

    Knowledge is power.

From what I have felt so far, the issue of the clogged drain does not exist in a particular city but the same might apply to most of the cities. The main reason for such mismanagement is due to improper homework of the town administration department responsible for the upkeep of all the drains beside the roads to keep the same intact before the arrival of the rainy reason.
It is not that they were not doing this task earlier.
The town administration department was very conscious of such a problem ten years back. The staff were entrusted with the job of cleaning all the drains with the allocated staff . As a result, there was no such chance of occurance of waterlogging.
It might be due to the reason of the staff - shortage due to the heavy retirement of the employees.

It is correct to say that the argument that Government should initiate necessary steps to keep the drainage system well. But at the same time we, public, should never forget our duty or share on that operation. We should use the dust bins properly, without throwing the garbage outside the dustbin. we should never litter bottles and tin cans in the gutters.
In most of the areas corporation/municipal sanitary personnel are coming to collect the garbage and we should avail their services properly.
If our cooperation in this way exists the work of making drainage proper by government persons is easy and in turn it is benefits is ours, the public.
