How leadership can make a whale of a difference anywhere

Steve Jobs. Sundhar Pichchai. H V Kamath. Narayanamurthy. These are some big names from the IT industry and the banking industry. They were all tallest leaders who were able to inspire billions of followers around the globe with their actions. They were also respected for their innovative qualities and are still being respected for whatever they had spoken or continue to speak even today.

This is true of politics as well. The late Jawaharlal Nehru was reported to be touring some part of South Tamil Nadu, with one of India's tallest leaders, the late Mr. Kamaraj, the former CM of Tamil Nadu. An old lady came up to speak to Kamaraj who introduced the lady, his mother, to Nehru. The latter was shocked to know who the lady was. Such was the moral honesty in those good days.

We had leaders from all over India, who were similar to Nehru and Kamaraj. The level of achievement was stupendous, given the lack of resources. Foreign Direct Investment was unknown then. Today, the giant Public Sector companies like NLC and BHEL feed the entire private sector.

Cut to today. Unfortunately, not a single leader from any party can even come to some ten percent of the giants of those times. We can only hope that someone emerges from somewhere, with a massively clean record and becomes the tallest leader of India. Only then can India survive as a democratic nation.

The role of a leader is very important. A CM taking one rupee as a salary is good and as a leader, he can make other ministers also do the same thing. But if the same CM gets a building constructed for his stay costing Rs.500 crores of public money, how can we believe such a leader? As mentioned by the author there were many leaders earlier who never thought about their own family. Sri Shastriji, our ex-PM took a loan and purchased a car and his wife repaid the loan after his death. I understand Shastriji did not even have his own house. When there was a train accident when he was the railway minister, he resigned from the post taking responsibility for the accident and went home on his own without using the government car.
Now we will not see such leaders. Some leaders are slightly better even now but I don't want to mention the names but definitely, we definitely have to see leaders like Shastriji in politics and voters should also support such leaders.

A good leader makes a big difference in everything. It is expected that a good leader should show examples of honesty and right working in the interest of the organisation or the country whatever the case may be.
If a leader is good then people under him get motivated to do work for the progress and prosperity. They look to their leader for inspiration and encouragement.
Leaders are required in all the areas and not only in politics. A good politician might not be a good leader. Politics has its own methods of getting success. The followers of the politicians follow him because of many reasons and not necessarily because he is a good leader. A politician distributing freebies might get more popularity than others.
We have to assess a leader based on many parameters and based on his overall contributions and efforts for the benefit of the people. We cannot assess them in a biased manner.

A good leader takes care of the entire team sacrificing his self-interest. In that respect, we were fortunate enough to have a lot of national leaders sacrificing their interests for the sake of the progress of the common masse. Such leaders did not invite any criticism relating to the misappropriation of funds or any corruption charges.
A few such noted leaders were the Late Jawahar Lal Nehru, the Late Lal Bahadur Sastri and the late Mrs Indira Gandhi. All these personalities never bothered their difficulties in discharging their selfless work for the nation.
However, these are the stories of the past. We can see the reverse trend currently where the leaders are involved for their own gain except for a few personalities and the rest think of their own.

Sheo Shankar Jha has made a very important observation about the misappropriation of funds for one's personal use and if a leader does so then what is the sanctity of the system under him. He can only make money when he allows all the people under him to do corruption and share the booty with him.
In a corrupt system governance becomes a secondary thing as everything can be bought with money. We can not progress and prosper in such a system where a few leaders start accumulating wealth by siphoning from public funds.
A honest tax payer loses in such a scenario and many start avoiding taxes bringing more complications in the already degraded system.
In essence, the honesty and integrity of a leader is the most important matter and when that percolates down to the lower level the golden era begins for any society, organisation, or country.

A leader should lead by example. He should set the trend by following ethics and making others to follow the path. When the leader himself/ herself is not honest how can he expect others to be honest?
But these days we are seeing many leaders who say follow my instructions but not actions. You never think about what I do but do what I ask you to do. This is the approach many of the leaders follow. A very unfortunate situation. Today also there are some good leaders but the definition of good varies from person to person. The leader who I think is good may not be considered by some other person. Everything is relative only.

Everyone cannot be a good leader. It is a quality that few people possess and it requires a lot of power to convince others to do something for the welfare of the people or society or even a small group.
A good leader has a good following because many people believe in what he or she says.
A good leader has the potential to align his followers in a desired path to achieve the overall objectives.
Such people are highly focussed for their goals and use their followers to achieve that.
The general public and citizens should have a capability to distinguish between a good leader and an average or bad leader. It is necessary because the result would be good in favour of all only when we choose a good leader.
