Pomodoro Technique: Effective Time Management Technique to improve Productivity

All people do not have the same or similar concentration levels. In my own case, my concentration level is not more than 20 minutes at a stretch. But Pomodoro technique helps people with less concentration improve productivity.

Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late eighties. It was named after the tomato-shaped kitchen-timer which Francesco Cirillo used during his university days (by the way, Pomodoro is Italian for Tomato).

This technique helps to enhance productivity by breaking work into intervals, typically 25 minutes at a stretch, separated by short breaks.

Let us know how this technique works.

Step 1------------Choose a Task: Select a task which you need to accomplish.

Step 2------------Set the Timer: Set a timer for 25 minutes. This period is known as one Pomodoro.

Step 3------------Work: Focus solely on the task until the timer rings. Avoid all distractions.

Step 4------------Break: Take a short break, usually for 5 minutes. Step away from your work area and relax.

Step 5-------------Repeat: After the above four Pomodoros, take a longer break of 15-30 minutes.

The philosophy behind Pomodoro Technique is the idea that frequent breaks can improve mental agility. It helps in minimizing burnout by allowing periodic rest, enhancing focus during work periods. Furthermore, the fixed intervals create a sense of urgency, motivating individuals to work more efficiently within the given time-frame.

The technique also promotes better planning and tracking of work, ultimately resulting in a higher level of productivity.

That is true. Small breaks after every 25 minutes of work will make us more productive. I read this on the internet sometime back. If we sit on the same job for a long time. we may lose interest and we may try to postpone the work for some reason or the other. Instead, we set small periods and plan a small break after every period so our minds may not feel monotonous and we will have the enthusiasm to complete the work as planned. When we think we have to sit for 5 hours we may feel that is too long. But if we take it as 25 minutes at a stretch we will not have that feeling. When a task is given to us, if we look at the task as a whole, we feel it is very difficult and we may not have confidence. If we divide the task into smaller tasks and if we go by step by step we may be able to complete the whole task positively. I don't whether this is also explained in Pomodoro Technique.

Author has presented a structured approach for taking breaks while working.
Break after a spell of working is suggested by the experts for giving relief from the monotony and enabling one to stretch one's body and change posture. Continuously working brings fatigue and stress in a person.
The technique mentioned by the author is definitely a correct way of taking break and once we follow a method like that then we go by it and do not change it as per our whims and fancies.
I remember during a complicated project work one of our team members was very particular about taking breaks after every hour or so and even if we forgot it, he remembered. He reminded us in jovial ways. Once he was asked a difficult question during the discussions and after a short silence he told that he would be in a position to answer that only after the tea break which was long due. There was a laughter and everyone agreed that a break had to be taken.

    Knowledge is power.

From the perspective of a home maker I strongly believe that a home maker should take periodic breaks during the massive household jobs especially those who do not have servants.
Many women are ignorant of this and work for long hours in hope of taking a long rest. They should change their pattern and take breaks intermittently.
The theory mentioned by the author is applicable in all the situation. The basic idea is to stretch the body after every one or one and a half hour. Taking breaks helps in avoiding the stiffness of muscles and ligaments. People who work continuously for long hours suffer from stiffness of the body muscles and joints.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Yes, taking a break after a certain time interval say half an hours after the completion of an assignment is the best way to rejuvenate the body - cells. This can be verified by taking up homework on how far this statement is correct in practice.
Concentrating on a particular point for an appreciable time puts not only the eyes in severe severe strain but it affects the whole nervous system and the same can be experienced with a continuous engagement of our nerves.
If this is taken in a regular way, consequences will have a permanent effect on the verbs. After taking a break intermittently and resuming a task does not produce ill effects This theory has been established by the researchers.
