What has happened in Tamil Nadu!

In Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu, 47 hapless people died consuming illicit liquor (hooch). The number of deaths may increase. In the affected village many women have become widows all at once. It has come to light that methanol was used in the illicit liquor. It has also been reported that during election time, the two main Dravidian parties encourage the distribution of illicit liquor to the people of the developed state of Tamil Nadu.

It is very unfortunate. I heard similar cases happened in Tamil Nadu in 2023 also. I read somewhere that the Tamil Nadu Director of Medical Education Sangumani informed the press yesterday that 47 people have died after consuming illicit liquor in the Kallakurichi district. Still, many people are getting treatment in various hospitals around that place. I think it is the 3rd state involved in cases related to liquor. We are hearing about the Delhi liquor scam in which many big leaders are involved and some of the leaders are in judicial custody and enquiry is going on. Similarly in AP also there is a scam related to liquor. The state government encouraged some brands which are very cheap but sold at a very high price. Already enquiry is in progress. Now this Tamilnadu case is the third case. Here also the state government ordered a judicial enquiry and we have to wait for the outcome.
These days there are no ethics in politics and everybody looks for their gains rather than the country's interests. It is very unfortunate.

The news is a heart- shocking one. The people irrespective of the place are not aware of the ultimate fact of how a spurious liquor can take their lives. They are addicted to alcoholism and they need the same at any cost. They need the support of the state government to know the side effects of spurious liquors.
They should be provided with a rehabilitation centre where they can be treated to bring back their lives to normal. This business cannot be stopped so easily due to the protection of influential personalities.

It is a shocking and unfortunate incident and surprisingly the state government seems to be a mute spectator. It has happened earlier also in Tamilnadu as well as in some other states of our country.
The problem of the people getting affected by the adulterated liquor is a very serious matter and persons behind this business should be severely punished for this. Poor people often go for cheap liquor and then fall in this trap even losing their lives like in this case.
State governments have to take strict actions in these matters and should try to find the root cause and identify main culprits who are engaged in these ulterior activities.

The election is just over. It appears that the hooch which was brought for distribution amongst voters of the developed state during the election, has not been fully consumed during the election.

Perhaps it would be appropriate that in future elections, instead of hooch, the filthily rich politicians of that particular parties, distribute IMFL among the voters to avoid such unfortunate deaths.

Distribution of any item or freebies to the public to gain votes is in bad taste. Election commission has to find ways to check and control this menace. It is not only in Tamilnadu that such things are happening. In many states some of the politicians are wooing the voters in one or other way.
The poor people as well as some middle class citizens fall in the trap of these politicians and just for a small gain in terms of material or money accept whatever is given free to them.
Once voting process is over the politicians disappear from the scene and forget these people who chose them for such big positions.
Whether it is poverty or lack of knowledge many citizens are following these politicians blindly. This is the irony of our political system.

The issue of gifts and money distribution in elections is more in assembly elections. In Parliament elections it is not prevalent in many states. This time in Telangana even though nobody has come and personally asked for the votes during MP elections money was distributed, I heard, by all parties during MLA elections, I heard. It is a bad practice. These days voters have become wise. They are accepting gifts from all the contestants and finally voting for the candidate they want. That is what happened this time in AP, I understand.

It is not a healthy practice to distribute freebies during the election campaign since such freebies would not make them happy any more demanding more and more from the donors in the form of cash or some edible food. Apart from that it is a way of enticing the common men into an unhealthy practice making them more corrupt.
If we look back, there was no such system in the regime of 60s and 70s. The citizens were honest enough to choose their leaders with honest means and the elected candidates were undoubtedly fulfilled the genuine demand of the people.

Are we discussing the hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu or the issue of distributing freebies to voters during elections? Just because Partha mentioned that the hooch that was bought for distribution during elections (the author needs to clarify as to whether any party would dare to supply illicit hooch to its voters, immaterial of the basic fact that the distribution of any kind of freebies, illicit or otherwise, is totally illegal) was not probably fully consumed, should we toe the line? Let us be more responsible while posting responses.

Partha, why are you getting so excited? I did make a point and I stand by it. Don't try to incite because I believe our senior members are more matured to understand the facts.

Let me tell you something which I had categorically said before- please be straight when you want to make a point. Facts are something different from the fictions you come up with and so be straight and to the point.

    Saji Sir:

    1. First and foremost, I am assuring you I am completely straight. During my life span of 56 years 7 months and 26 days, no one (except you) has expressed any doubt in this regard.

    2. I am very young at heart, and so, I am always excited.

    3. My view: Freebies may be illegal, but freebies are freely distributed by the Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu. And freebies include desi daru (hooch). If you have any doubt in this regard, you may ask this to that particular erudite member. He will confirm that this is not fiction, this is a fact.

    4. The neighbouring Kerala has been following the footsteps of Tamil Nadu. The leaders of that state also distribute desi daru as freebies before the election to impress the voters.

Alcohol is a big tool during elections that's why government restricts its sale during or before elections. Even in my state which is North India people love everything that comes for free. People get free ration which I think is a bigger problem because nowadays people don't want to work just because they are getting everything for free. People are not fool these days, they just take everything which is offered for free and vote according to their interests.

Freebies is offered by almost every party and I have seen people attend rallies of different parties. They take freebies from all parties and vote whichever party they like. Alcohol addicts don't care who gives them alcohol, they just take it whoever offers them. I live in rural area and I know what's the mentality of the rural folks. There mindset is fixed according to the caste politics and any freebies is not going to make a difference. They vote according to their caste inclination and the party that benefits their caste.

    Thanks and regards.

Babu Sir: In the early morning, I shudder to think about your proposal of banning or restricting alcohol. If that happens, what would people like us do? Further, have you forgotten that during the terrible Corona period, alcohol sustained our economy for a very long time?

In this post, my humble and simple proposal is distribution of IMFL instead of hooch by the political parties of Tamil Nadu to their voters.
