Dreams are strange things in our lives because we have them but most of the time they all hephazardly present situations and happenings to us as if they are coming from an imaginary world floating in our minds and disappearing soon being replaced by other dream sequences.
Many psychologists and experts in this field try to decipher the meaning of these dreams and reasons for their presence and in brief it is believed that they are the subtle reflections of our subconscious mind. We read different material, we watch movies of various types, we talk with people having different ideologies, and we interact with others for different matters, etc and all that is stored in our mind but we remember only the relevant and important and other information is pushed back to the back of our mind which is also called the lower memory layers of brain. It is said that all those things which are buried in our mind can surface up in our dreams in totally unstructured ways and we find them illogical. There are other explanations also for understanding the dreams but this one appears to me as the simplest way to understand the issue.

Yes. Sometimes the dreams are meaningless. After getting up if we think about that dream we can't get any clue to understand the meaning. All of us will dream and sometimes the dreams may come true also. But always it is not that all dreams will become real. There is a belief in many people that the dreams we get in the early morning before sunrise will become true. It is also not completely true. Generally, people say that these dreams will be something related to the subject of what we were thinking before going to bed. Sometimes during the daytime, we may be thinking about some issues and these dreams may be related to those issues. The majority of the dreams may be related to the experiences we have during our daytime.
While we are sleeping also our mind may be working and thinking about some points and they may reflect in our dreams. We may be getting many dreams while asleep but we may not remember all of them. In my opinion, we need not worry much about what we experience in these dreams.

Having been a student of Psychology I can say that dreams are the reflections of our subconscious mind. When we sleep our brain is working but not fully and only the basic functions are active. At that time brain is not able to think cohesively and structurally. It is unlikely that we dream a sequence of coherent and logical steps in our sleep and solve some proble or complete some task.
During sleep our brain is working in piecemeal and whatever thoughts or dreams coming in our mind are scattered and disjointed from each other.
Some people claim that dreams can be interpreted and have relations with the events happened in our lives. It could be true but there is no one to one correspondence in this.
Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Human brain is a complex part of human body that never sleeps. Even when we are sleeping it is working that's why we have dreams, which is our subconscious mind. I don't think it has anything to do with real life and you can't connect with any past, present, or future, that's why they are always strange. I read somewhere about a person who was in comma for 12 years and when he became concious he revealed that he was able to hear and understand everything but wasn't able to talk or respond to anyone in those 12 years. It is a fascinating subject to study and tells a lot about complexity of human brain. Even when we falling in our dream, we feel fearful and become awake once we are about hit the ground. Astrologers always find a meaning of such dreams but I don't think it has any meaning.

Strange dream happens when the gas formed due to unhealthy food affects our subconscious mind or brain.
However, many famous creations are the result of strange dreams. Some examples from English literature:
(a) Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote his famous poem "Kubla Khan" after waking up from an opium-induced sleep. His poem was the result of a dream.
(b) Stephenie Meyer has stated that the idea for her popular novel "Twilight" came to her in a dream. The dream involved a human girl and a vampire who was in love with her.
(c) Mary Shelley's famous novel "Frankenstein" was inspired by a dream.
(d) Robert Louis Stevenson had a dream that inspired the plot of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde".
(e) Howard Phillip Lovecraft repeatedly explained in his correspondence with other writers about the influence of dreams on his writing. He also wrote an article on this issue.
There are many such examples in all other languages.

It is told that the dreams are nothing but reflex of our mind thoughts or happenings on that day. It is true many dreams are meaningless some times fearing too.
I remember a joke in this time.
One day a boy, who accustomed to pray God before eating his lunch, went to his friend's house. Friend's mother asked him to accompany for food with his friend. Both of them sat before the table. Once food served, the friend start eat but this boy started to pray as his practice. The friend told him, 'Do not worry! my mother cook well and carefully".
Like that whether believe or not, It is better to pray our own supreme/God or think any fruitful events either happened on that day or earlier before going to sleep.

Mr. Partha, is their any research that supports your assumption of gas being the main cause of strange dreams? According to your statement if one has to write a book they should eat unhealthy food, which causes gas and gives ideas through strange dreams while sleeping?
Thanks and regards.
Thanks and regards.

Babu Sir:
Sorry for delay in replying. I have heard from many knowledgeable people that terrible dreams are caused by gas formed in our body which is in turn caused by unhealthy, spicy food not fully digested. Frankly speaking, I am not sure about any study about it. Other people who have more knowledge on relationship between food and dream, can confirm the view.
You have stated: "According to your statement if one has to write a book they should eat unhealthy food, which causes gas and gives ideas through strange dreams while sleeping". I have never stated this. I only provided some examples where uncommon ideas developed after strange dreams. These ideas later produced superhit novels/poem, some of which were mentioned in my previous response. You may try to read the article written by Howard Phillip Lovecraft, where he strongly advocated this theory.

I want to add another aspect about dreams that in real life we see things happening continuously like a video and there is a sequence in it. So we perceive those things happening time and again and we are already experienced about their logic and meaning in our lives.
But dreams are not like that. There might be a little continuity in them but soon it breaks and a new frame emerges which is most of the times totally disconnected with the earlier frame.
So dreams are a random collection of different images or frames or short video playbacks and can be compared with a collage containing so many different images.
Because of that variety and hephazardness we often forget the dreams within no time. At the same time if dream is a continuous and logical sequence of happening we remember it for longer time.
Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

All of us dream during our sleep. However, very few can remember what exactly the dream was. If you ask a psychologist, he might have a different explanation for witnessing such a dream. In the sleeping process, there is the alternate phase of deep and light sleep.
Normally we witness a dream during our light sleep and the same subsides once we experience the deep phase of body rest.
The dream earlier seen cannot be remembered if the dreamer experiences a deep sleep.
Any dream seen before waking up is vivid and clear and as such we can recall the same .

The very concept of why we dream is a question that hasn't been answered as yet. Normal dreams have been explained to some extent in the responses above though the reasons are not clear.
Let us talk about strange dreams as asked for in the thread. As explained, we may see dreams that may be reflections of what we see, think or imagine when we are awake. But what about strange dreams? What about seeing places, people and areas that would surprise us in our dreams? How does that happen?
Dream is something that is beyond what we can decipher. People may call it spiritual or scientific as per their belief, but the truth is that dreams, what they are, will take some to be deciphered to reach a logical conclusion.

It is quite fascinating because I too had a strange dream where I was sitting under a Banyan trees along with many Buddhist monks. We all were meditating and chanting under the Banyan tree. All of a sudden the mantras became very strong and my body lost sensation. The moment the body lost sensation in the dream I woke up. It was one of the most unexpected dreams I ever had in my life. I have never seen any Buddhist monk in my life and in the dream I was meditating along with them. After that dream, I have grown some interest in Buddhism.
I have met some relatives who claim that they can predict future with the help of their dreams. They claim that dreams tell us about something that is about to happen in future.

Have any one of you experienced repeated or continued dreams? Like, a particular location, people etc.? How come? Dreams are not at all what we conceive. It is something beyond our thoughts. Even scientists and medical professionals are still looking for an answer.

Saji Sir has sought to know: "Have any one of you experienced repeated or continued dreams?" In this connection, I would like to state my own experience. When we shifted to our newly-purchased which is on the top floor of the multi-storied building, I used to have a particular dream almost every night.
I used to dream that I was travelling in a plane or helicopter, and as part of an exercise, I was going downwards from it using a rope. Halfway through the journey, my hands slipped and I started falling from the sky. At that point, I used to get up drenched in sweat.
I clearly understood that my fear of heights was turning to acrophobia. Further, watching the exercises/training of the commandos or air force personnel who come down to the ground using rope was taking a heavy toll on me.
With the passsage of time, I got habituated to the top floor and the dream left me.

I use to have a dream about my friend who has left this world at a very young age. I constantly had a dream where that friend was alive and always talking with me. Such dream happened continuously for many years to me as if the person is still alive in this world. May be for 5 years the dream continuously came and now it has stopped completely. I don't know what those dream meant but I became very sad after those dreams.
Thanks and regards.
