Extremely painful to know the state of women in India during 19th Century

I was reading an article about Breast tax imposement on women belonging to lower caste in the Kingdom of Travancore (currently state of Kerala). I am baffled to know that such things existed and lower caste women were directed to not cover their upper part of the body. If they didn't obey they would face the anger of the Kingdom rulers. I don't know what kind of King imposes such a system. Such people are not kings but devils.

It is not the only incident, there numerous incidents that shows the real picture about the so called "sone ki chiriya", where only kingdoms ruled and commoners were just commodities. Women suffered due to systems like sati pratha and purdah system. I don't know why people think that India was a heaven during those times.

It is true that in earlier times women had to suffer the atrocities of men as well as the rulers of their respective kingdoms. History is witness that women were not treated impartially. Men thought that the duty of woman was to serve the master and society also had the same belief.
The changes came with the modernisation, and educational and technological advancements which gave opportunities to women to get themselves educated and join some job and become financially independent.
In earlier times women were not allowed to work outside the four walls of the house but modernisation did a lot of change in that restriction and today we are seeing women doing all sorts of jobs which were once considered the forte of the men.
I hope with more changes coming in the societies in this respect and more opportunities opening for women the situation would further improve.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Those who believe in 'mulakkaram' or breast tax in Kerala during the eighteenth and nineteenth century, must read some articles, the links of which are given below:-

    (a) https://sangamtalks.org/the-breast-tax-another-fake-hinduphobic-story-dr-premendra-priyadarshi-sangamtalks/
    (b) https://www.telegraphindia.com/culture/style/the-breast-tax-that-wasnt/cid/1803638

There are many such articles and also videos on this topic. This fake story has been created by so-called liberals and seculars to hide/counterbalance the atrocities committed by the communal Moplas/Mappilahs on Hindu women. We are so naive to believe all these nonsenses.

I can also give many arguments to prove that Sati system and purdah culture were the direct consequences of dark Muslim medieval period in India. But as I am very busy in official work and also in attending courses for my own development, I am not going to write anything on these two issues.

We don't know the facts and we will go by what the book says. As mentioned by Partha Sir, there may be different versions on the same subject. People who have an interest can do the research and bring out the facts. What we read we believe. Anyhow, we have no kings and kingdoms now. All people have having right to elect their representatives in the government. Today the situation of ladies is different.
I heard in the olden days ladies were not treated properly and they were forced to be confined to houses only. This much I know. I read many books in which Satisahgamanam was mentioned but now such issues are not there.
Kings who were unreasonable were also tolerated by people in those days. Even today, ladies belonging to some religions are suffering a lot. They are not even allowed to show their identity in public. Such practices should not be encouraged.

I too read about it and an eminent historian has written a book on it. We can't deny the sacrifice of a brave women (Nangeli) against the atrocities bestowed upon lower caste women. It would be a dishonor if we say such system didn't existed at all because a women sacrificed herself because of such system.
    Thanks and regards.

It is not easy to differentiate between the fake stories and actual history of a place and the associated condition of women during those times.
Anyway, during earlier times there was not a good treatment to women due to then existing social customs and that is still going on in some of the conservative societies.
Women were treated as inferior personalities in many societies and were considered an entity which could be ordered for doing any task by their masters for anything.
That condition is not there today except in a few societies where religious and orthodox feelings prevail.
Regarding the mentioning of the phrase - 'how India was a heavan in those times ...' by the author of this post, I have to say that India was prosperous in those times because of natural resources, agriculture, dairy, and a variety of crops. That was the reason why invaders and other outsiders made it a point to loot Indian kingdoms and ran away with the booty.
They were not bothered about the condition of the women at that time. Later they captured our lands and even captured women and kept them in their residences.
India was heaven is a phrase generally used to describe its prosperity in those times.

    Knowledge is power.
