Delhi airport roof collapsed. How can such things happen?

It is a shame that the roof of an international airport in Delhi has collapsed. If an international level construction is of this level then you can imagine what kind of construction is going on in the other parts of the country. One person has died on the spot and 6 others are injured at the moment. If such things are not taken care of, then we will become a laughing stock for the whole world.

An international airport sees visitors from all over the world and if such incidents happen at such places then it will surely tarnish the image of our country. How can an international-level venue have such substandard construction that it collapses after rainfall?

This is a serious matter and requires thorough investigation. It is true that if such an importance place has such a fate then what would happen to the ordinary structures and their constructions. The international airport building in Delhi was constructed hardly 12-13 years back and supposed to withstand the weather for a long time because we also expect maintenances in the usual way.
This incident tells us that all the construction work going on today in our country might not be adhering to the quality that is promised in the tender documents or service orders. If it so then it is a matter of worry and requires a check and control on the credentials of the companies that are awarded these important construction work. It is not a question as which Govt is ruling the country but the governance of the system that executes all such projects.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

The area of building and construction has a sad history of corruption and other mal practices in our country and it is well known that commission is paid by the contractors to the Govt officials and then quality of the work is compromised. In some projects where honest officials are involved the quality might not suffer but it is said that number of such honest and hard working officials is less in comparison to the corrupt ones.
So, until the menace is corruption is eradicated in the system such failures and mishaps are bound to happen and people will suffer.
Every year roads are repaired before the rainy season but it hardly stands the first rain. It means quality of repair is poor. Drains are cleaned but partially and they get clogged again within no time. Money is spent, announcements are made but practically little work is done.
Ours is a big country and every job demands massive activity and stringent control but that never happens as some of the people who are supposed to check and certify the project are hand in gloves with the contractors.
When some accident happens then blame game starts and one agency starts blaming the other one.

    Knowledge is power.

It is a regrettable incident. One man lost his life and some others have been injured.

But such incidents happen very rarely. As far as I know, this was the first time, this type of accident happened. That too due to very heavy rain at that time in Delhi.

Only a few months ago, in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, many people got killed when a billboard collapsed during a sudden storm.

The USA maintains a very high safety standard. Even in the USA, there are many more fatal incidents during and after natural calamities. I have heard about many unbelievable incidents after Hurricane Katrina and others.

Human being is still nothing in front of nature's fury.

But, that should not be an excuse. We must give maximum emphasis of proper construction and regular maintenance to minimize the chance of such incidents.

Now, it is the duty of the administration to pay proper compensation to the family of deceased man and, if possible, arrange a suitable job for one of the family-members.

It is a tragic event and the person who died is the most unfortunate man at the moment. There should be a standard to maintain the quality of any public infrastructure in the country. Government needs to make sure that construction work is of highest standards because it is a matter of country's reputation. It was not a heavy rainfall by any means and such rains are very common in monsoon season. We can't compare a monsoon rain with cyclone Katrina or any other tropical storm. Cyclones and tornados have the capacity to destroy anything in their way.
    Thanks and regards.

It is the most tragic accident when a person lost his life due to the unexpected fall of the structure of the airport roof. Instead of taking the same seriously, the administration does not look serious to find the drawback behind the construction.
It is the question of the reputation of the country since passengers of other countries do pay their visits apart from the passengers of the domestic flights.
In Bihar also, we have witnessed the collapse of four bridges in the different places indicating the callousness of the administration. Blaming - game is an easy task but by doing so we are loosing faith with our existing administration.

It is a very tragic incident and it is the responsibility of the AAI to see that such accidents will not repeat. There is a problem in our system itself. The lowest bidder only will get the order. After the contractor has to satisfy officers and others involved in the process. The contractor should also make some money. With all this, the quality of the work suffers but nobody bothers about it. This should change. Otherwise, we may hear such incidents very often.
The concerned minister from the Central government visited the site and announced some compensation to the family of the deceased. My condolences to the family of the deceased. I hope some sense of responsibility will come in the concerned and try to maintain ethics in discharging their duties properly.
Whether it is an Indian or a foreigner, human life is the same. Nobody can bring the deceased person back. When we hear such we feel guilty even though we are not responsible for the same.
