Is it a very difficult task to store and harvest rain water?

When we have sufficient rains then a question naturally pops up in our minds that why we cannot check this water from going to sea (through rivers) and instead store some good part of it in lakes, ponds, reservoirs, rain water harvesting, etc.
If that is done properly then we would not have any problem of water till at least the next rains. It is said that creating additional reservoirs for water storage and rain water harvesting are difficult tasks as sufficient land and suitable areas are required for making the artificial lakes and in rain harvesting the ground takes in some water initially but the system gets choked soon and no further water goes in the underground rocks.
What are your views on this? Is it really difficult to create such facilities for rain water storage and harvesting? 0lease share your views.

What the author has hunted was not difficult in the past when the villagers lacked the facility of water storage other than the ponds and wells available to them for storage of water. In the first five-year plan and more so in the second, the villagers got the support of funds from the block officials to raise the capacity of each fund with the proper mechanization of ponds incorporating digging properly and cementation of the surface area so that the water accumulated in the ponds do not make its road to go outside.
At present, maintenance of ponds and wells in the villages is not being taken adequate care resulting in less storage of water.
The cases of the cities are different and the people in the cities are noticing a crisis due to various factors such as poor monsoons, wastage of water due to leakage of pipes in the supply system, not taking proper care in closing the taps after its usage.

There were many ponds and lakes in the rural areas earlier. But as the population increases the demand for land also increases. All people want to have their own lands and houses. In this pursuit, many ponds and water reservoirs were converted to open lands and houses were constructed. That is how the scarcity of water increased.
Rainwater harvesting and storage of rainwater is a necessity now. Otherwise, the water problem will increase and for future generations purchasing not only drinking water but also water for other requirements will become a must. All houses should make rainwater harvesting pits so that the level of groundwater will increase. Similarly, in gardens, these pits are to be made in one corner of the garden so that rainwater can be stagnant there which can be used for gardening and at the same time ground water level will also increase.

I would not say that it is a very difficult task but yes it is a massive one. It requires a lot of thrust in the matter from the Govt and cooperation from public.
Making ponds and lakes is alright but the actual work starts after that when we have to periodically desilt them and keep them intact away from the pollution from industries and small units.
Making big dams is another way to store water but there are environmental issues and people often agitate against that.
Still if there is a will there is a way and instead of big reservoirs we could think of many small ones in the periphery of towns and cities. Important thing is to maintain them and do not make them a dump yard for garbage and waste material.
Rain water harvesting in residential as well as other areas is a good concept but the problem is choking of the surface facilities where water stops going in. It is not easy to push water in the underground rocks. Initially some water might enter but that is too little to depend upon.

    Knowledge is power.
