Is it always possible to complete the tasks by the deadline?

In a workplace many times due to stress and pressure of work a superior directs his subordinate to carry a task within the stipulated time and repeatedly reminds him the dead lines. Some subordinates are not able to take up that pressure from the top and feel offended or helpless especially when they find that it was not possible to do that by the stipulated time. The result is that they have to apprise their supervisor or manager about it and ask for some more time or just surrender with the status.
Such things often happen in companies, organisations, or business units and are a part of the game. One has to do one's best efforts and that is all. There is no point in getting unnecessarily stressed and worried about it. It is better to express the situation to the boss rather then getting stressed for a long time.
What is your experience about such situations? How the subordinates should cope up with the orders from the top? Is it possible to complete the tasks always by the deadlines?

Yes, the tasks assigned to us have to be finished within the deadline since the higher-ups have intimated all the connected agencies regarding the completion of a task within the stipulated period.
While working in a steel plant as an executive, I have seen my top bosses under pressure to assure the different agencies regarding the probable date of achievement of the target. I was in the department of Hot Rolled Coil Finishing where the different products such as Hot Rolled Coils, Sheared Plates and other finished products were regularly despatched with a commitment of target of monthly despatch of the different products.
It needed the continuous support of other departments such as maintenance, laboratory, traffic, inspection etc to effect the timely despatch. Failure of any agency including the shortage of manpower in my department could cause the failure of the despatch.
However, in most of the opportunities, we achieved the targets with a fine working team and excellent cooperation of other agencies.

Before assigning a job to a person, it is the responsibility of the assigner to call the person responsible for completing the job, discuss with him in detail about the task and decide a target date with the person's consent. It is better if the dates are fixed with mutual consent. The executor should make a process chart in which various important stages involved in the process are mentioned. A completion date for each step or process has to be decided and review meetings should be conducted once in a while to know the status and clear any doubts. If this process is adopted chances of getting delays will be less. If there are delays identified in the review meetings and if necessary target dates should be shifted as per the estimated delay periods. But many people will not do this and sit on the job till the last date and approach the authorities at the last moment and come out with excuses. When we are concentrating on the job and not able to finish on time, the higher-ups may respond positively, I feel.

Nowadays we are working in a very competitive environment and companies or business houses are working under a big pressure of making a delivery in time. In the present business world everything is linked to other things and if there is a single delay in one of the tasks then the whole chain of activities gets delayed. That is sometimes disastrous for the company.
So completing task in time is essential for survival in the business.
Only thing that can help in this matter is that at the planning stage itself we have to foresee and estimate the time to be incurred in various activities so that our plans are realistic and we do not err at any step.
There are many methods which organisations follow for making plans and then stick to that religiously.
Sometimes due to unprecedented reasons the plan gets delayed but that is nobody's fault and management understand that.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

At the time of conceiving a project generally a meeting of experts and officials will be held and they all will sit together and draw the plan for its execution. As per the past experience the timelines are placed and responsibilities are awarded. At that time itself the officials should bring out all the apprehensions and agree for the timelines.
This all is of course at the planning level. These are now to be transformed in practical elements where tasks are done and targets are achieved. At that time there are delays and bottlenecks at the lower level and they are generally the cause of delay in the project. At that level it is obvious that some workers or supervisors might be stressed because of the delay but in big projects such things happen and if they are within the tolerance limit then that is acceptable.

    Knowledge is power.
