What do you prefer, cow or buffalo milk?

Milk is a daily use item and most people buy it for making tea. Also, majority of the people use it as a nutritious drink for kids. I have noticed people saying that cow milk is superior to buffalo milk but when it comes to price buffalo milk wins. The amount of fat content may be the reason for the high price of buffalo milk. Dairy industries use milk to extract butter and ghee which is the reason buffalo milk offers more profits. Personally, I don't like the taste of buffalo's milk in comparison to cow's milk. Their taste varies but when it comes to paneer (cottage cheese), buffalo milk gives a better taste. Even the tea made from buffalo milk tastes better than the cow's milk. What's your choice?

The choice between the two will vary from consumer to consumer in the selection. The author has indicated some details between the two products for the benefit of consumers., but stll opt for cow milk due to the following reasons-
    1) cow milk does not take much time for its digestion and hence a consumer likes the same.
    2) Due to hugh content of fat in Buffalo milk, it will cause a high cholesterol level in out body system, whereas in cow milk the consumer will have less cholesterol content due to less presence of fat in the cow milk
    3) It can be offered to the patients having poor digestion with the addition of varying amount of water according to the patient's need.

During my childhood we were buying buffalo milk from the milkman and relished that. For a long time we had that arrangement.
Once I completed my education and got a job in a town in UP State then I wanted to buy the milk from a dairy and they asked me which one I wanted. That time readymade milk packets were not much popular and people either went to the milkman's place in the morning and got fresh milk or bought it from a dairy.
Anyway, that time I had no idea about the difference between the two so I simply told them to give me the buffalo milk. That arrangement went for a few years and then I switched to another job and got posted in Assam State.
When I settled in Assam then I enquired about milk and came to know that most of the milkman delivered only cow milk. So I started to buy it but I immediately found the difference that cow milk was not as thick as that of buffalo and it's taste was also different. Later I also came to know that cow milk contained less fat and was a better option to drink milk.
Sheo Shankar Jha has already provided some nutritional details about cow milk. I think health concious people should go for it.

In both the Telugu States majority of people use buffalo milk. Cows are also there but numbers are less when compared to the number of buffalos. Cow milk is largely used for worship purposes. Cow milk will be thin when compared to buffalo milk and health wise cow milk is better as it contains more proteins than buffalo milk. Buffalo milk is rich in fat and cream. So it may add up to a weight increase. But buffalo milk contains calcium and phosphorous that will help for gaining bone strength. Cow milk will get digested easily and many families feed cow milk to children.
As far as I am concerned, I use buffalo milk more and daily we use curd made out of buffalo milk.

I have a small question for Dr. Rao Sir. This is purely out of curiosity.

In Chitoor District of Andhra Pradesh, there is a dwarf breed of cow known as Punganur cow. This cow is among the world's smallest humped cattle breeds. Punganur cow's milk has a very high fat content. While cow milk normally has a fat content of 3 to 3.5 percent, the Punganur breed's milk contains 8 percent fat.

Have you ever tested the milk of Punganur dwarf cow? How is its taste?

I want to know this out of curiosity.

Panganur cow's milk is 300 rupees per litre and I don't think anyone will be able to get it. In the same way Jennet's milk is 5000 rupees per litre. I don't know what kind of people pay such an amount for one litre of milk. There are many ways to loot rich people and food business is right up there in such cases.
Humble yourself or life will do it for you!

The information about the small cow milk is an interesting one and if contains so much fat then it is likely equivalent to the buffalo milk. But the cost seems to be prohibitive.
I relish cow milk better than buffalo one. Cow milk is a low calorie milk as compared to the buffalo. However for making sweets and specific items like Kheer, Mava, or Cottage Cheese, I think that buffalo milk is better. Even for making tea I prefer buffalo milk.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

For me it depends on availability. In my childhood and early youth, I was in my native place and there cow milk was more available in the neighbourhood. Those days milk dairies were not there. Hence cow's milk was the only choice.
But when I moved out of my native town and migrate to a Metro city, buffalo milk was more easily available as there were more 'thabelas' nearby my place or I was buying the packaged milk from Govt diaries. Then also there was no preferential choice. Though packaged milk was labelled as cow's/buffalo's milk that was just based on fat content and not on real terms of cow or buffalo origin. Dairy milk was always a mix and match type item.

But on a personal note, I would prefer Buffalo milk as that is more thick and yields more cream/butter. Moreover buffalo milk is more suitable to my type of coffee drinking.
But now I get milk from a milkman and he says it is cow's milk. Any additional requirement is met with buying pacakaged govt dairy milk.

In village or outskirts of cities only we can see the difference. Now we in cities we just depends whatever milk pockets available in nearby stores. Of course in some branded pocket milks also we get cow milk separately. But as for as coffee any milk is okey. Cow milk is good for drinking in night before bed time especially for children. On no account we should make up our mind for a particular milk and if we do so, it is very difficulty to manage as it creates allergy in our mind.

I have tried both types of milk and I think cow's milk tastes better in comparison to buffalo milk. It is easy to digest and doesn't cause bloating as in the case of buffalo milk. Even Doctors recommend cow's milk for kids because their digestion is not that strong. I have read somewhere that Cow's milk has Vitamin A which is absent in buffalo's milk. So, even if I have choice of both milk, I would choose cow's milk. I would never use buffalo's milk because it doesn't suit me.
    Thanks and regards.
