Are you satisfied with the diagnosis that the doctors make?

When we get fever or pain in the body or any such thing then we go to a doctor for finding out what it is and he would be asking us many questions and also take some measurements like temperature, blood pressure, etc before making a diagnosis. If required he can ask us to get some blood test or any other test that he feels is important for making a correct diagnosis of the disease. Finally he would prescribe us some medicines for getting cured.
What is your experience with doctors in this regard? Do you get satisfied with the diagnosis they make? Or you take second opinion also? Do you go to the same doctor or sometimes go to the specialist also? Please share your experiences.

These doctors depend more on diagnostic test results and go by the results given by that test centre. Anything wrong in the test report will cause a disturbance to the patient. A good doctor will diagnose the problem based on the symptoms and only if necessary he suggests some investigation by diagnostic laboratories. But these days doctors are suggesting all the tests even for a small ailment. One of my friends went to a corporate hospital as he was getting a headache. They suggested brain scanning and no abnormality was found and finally, they suggested DOLO tables for the problem. Another problem with many doctors is overmedication. This is also a problem and using unnecessarily more medicines will damage our system and we will have frequent health issues.
We have a family doctor. Initially, he was diagnosing the problem by seeing the patient and suggesting medicines. He is a good doctor. Of late, he also started suggesting clinical investigations before suggesting a medicine.

It is an interesting topic. These days doctors are the busiest persons and as a result, they don't have much time to talk to the patients patiently to know the body condition of the patients. They would normally check blood pressure and temperature and finally prescribe pathological tests which they deem fit.
Once the diagnostic results are available from the pathological lab as suggested by the doctor, the patients approach his doctor. The doctor does not have enough time to listen to the patients anymore. Without wasting his time, he will write a couple of medicines charging exorbitant fees and will advise the patients to turn up next week so that he can earn extra by way of additional fees. The doctor will ensure that he earns maximum ignoring the patient's welfare. In that way, their business is going to satisfy their interests.

Every doctor doesn't have the capability to diagnose properly, that's why I think one must choose the best place for treatment. Once you get the diagnosis correct, you can get the treatment according to it. If diagnosis is wrong, you will not receive the right treatment. In my relation a child was bed wetting and no medicine worked. Parents of the child visited local doctor that diagnosed a kidney problem but it wasn't a kidney problem. A better doctor suggested MRI scan of the brain and it was detected that the kid is suffering from cerebral palsy and he doesn't have control over his urine because of the neurological problem. The problem is solved now but he has learning disability, which can only be improved through occupational therapy. If they hadn't gone to a better doctor they would have never got the right treatment. Hence, I suggest people to book an OPD at a reputed hospital like AIIMS or any central government hospital. It will be difficult to get the treatment but you will get the right treatment.

Some doctors are quite good at diagnosing the ailment and that depends on their professional knowledge and work experience. The problem in medical diagnosis is that there are many ailments or diseases which give almost same symptoms, and it becomes difficult to find out the real one until some pathological tests are done. That is the reason that many doctors though give some general medicines for one or two days for symptomatic relief but ask the patient to get some tests before making the final diagnosis.
Some people say that go to a doctor where rush is there which can be attributed to his experience gathered through examining a number of patients, some people advise us to go to old, aged doctors believing that they would have the best of the experience, and some others advise us to directly go to the specialist and do not waste time. So, there are different approaches but until we see the outcome of the doctor's advice in few cases, we cannot have confidence to go to him for consultation.

A common person considers a doctor like God. Many people go to a doctor with great expectations. But doctors have their own limitations because of the limit of the present medical sciences. They will do whatever possible to cure the patients and advise tests and drugs accordingly.
Diagnosis is the main thing in a treatment and if diagnosis is correct we can hope for the speedy recovery of the patient. Sometimes the diagnosis made by the doctor might not be correct and then they will change the diagnosis and would go for alternative course of medicine.
In some ailments even after doing tests nothing confirmatory is found and then the doctors tell that the source of disease is unknown. That means that medical reason is not known. Still they would prescribe some medicine for symptomatic relief.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

It is business now. I am speaking about Doctors employed in the private sector. The salary is fixed and the rest depends on how they exploit patients. They will refer the patient to all facilities available in the hospital because commission matters.

I have been taking my father to a clinic where there is only one doctor. He looks into all details and my father returns satisfied. So, it is not about hospitals or doctors, it is all about how you feel after vising a Doctor.

I know MBBS Doctors who can assess our problem by just looking at us or feeling our pulse. And there are post-graduates who would feel confused.

First of all we should believe doctors.
We should keep one doctor for our family members preferably in the locality we live. In such cases he, the doctor knows our family members' history and his diagnosis would be easy and thereby unnecessary tests can be avoided.
We should go to general doctor initially before consulting specialists.
In those days in a single dose the disease was getting cured and no complications was prevailing in many cases and only seldom cases faced critical and prolonged treatment and tests were found limited.
When the people starts doubted doctors the number of treatments and criticalities creeped.
I am seeing many people after consulting a doctor came home and reconcile his medicines with computer. This is typically a bad one as the descriptions available in computer is in general but the medicines prescribed by the doctor is specific to a particular person. No jumping conclusions should arrived.
A doctor suggested me to avoid pineapple fruit for treating me with his medicine. By presuming that I cannot come to conclusion that pineapple is not good for the disease similar to mine.

Doctor is the proper person trained to diagnose the disease of a patient and prescribe suitable medicines to cure it. When we go to a doctor we with a good faith in his capabilities. We believe in his diagnosis and treatment. There may be some instances where the opinion of another doctor becomes necessary. We have to believe the doctor.

First, I would like to mention at this point and time that doctors are also human beings. They can't do magic in a day or two to make a diagnosis if the patient suffers from any acute/chronic illness. Suppose it is just flu, cold, fever, or any viral infection as the author mentioned. In that case, doctors need to check the vitals/parameters required initially and wait not prescribing unnecessary medicines if the patient's condition is not serious. They could not make any crucial diagnosis or go for any diagnostic tests all of a sudden.

Our human anatomy is a scientific wonder and remains mysterious though we are much advanced in medical sciences with technology innovations and longevity of lives globally. We know about our earth and the galaxy around us. How many of us have known about a new structure found (not an organ) namely interstitium, fluid-filled sacs all over our human body?

Mr. Ramachandran Pattabiraman rightly stated that we must believe the doctors and his treatment would cure the illness. We must have our family physicians near our home or somewhere else whom we believe. The family physicians are aware of their patients' history and physical/allergies to any drug and treat them accordingly. Secondly, we should not search for any drug for an ailment on the computer or self-medication. Every individual has his/her unique physical system and treatment differs even though diagnosed with the same illness. Nowadays, patients themselves diagnose and request doctors to treat them with injections/antibiotics during the initial visit. Patients would like to get cured instantly. If it is a viral cold/fever/gastroenteritis, it would take at least five-seven days to get cured. If the patient requires any specialty services care his case will be forwarded to the concerned specialist doctor. We cannot blame all doctors as business-minded, a few may be the case.

We should have faith in the doctor. That is very correct. If we doubt the doctor, we should not go to him. That is why many of us have a family doctor and we believe him and go according to his advice.
My uncle was a doctor. But my father never had confidence in him. So he used to go to another doctor in that village. Even though my uncle earned a good name in that village as a doctor, my father used to go to the other doctor only. My uncle used to feel bad about this.

I think we should trust our Doctor because they are the one who knows better than us. In case you have any doubt you can contact a well known Doctor and cross check whether the current treatment is going the right way. It would be better to be in touch with a Doctor who is near to your residence because in case of emergency they only will be available. Although there is internet to take help through video calls but most of the Doctor's are not available 24/7.

There are some some Doctors in private sector hospitals, who are more into doing business and prescribe a lot of medicines that are not required at all. I once visited such hospital and a Nurse warned me in advanced about that Doctor. The nurse was right because that Doctor mostly trapped people into occupying the emergency ward so that they can earn more. In fact, later I came to know about the hospital's truth about having links with other big hospitals where they made fool out of innocent patients. Hence, it is always safe to know the background of the Doctor and his/her reputation.

    Thanks and regards.

Till date I did not have any issue of wrong diagnosis by doctors except one time. That was about forty years ago when I was in Madurai.. The doctor, based on test results diagnosed the problem as TB and started giving me strong medicine. I was bachelor and staying in a lodge taking hotel food then. Due to the strong medicines I started developing ulcers in mouth and stomach and could not take any food except a little buttermilk at times. I saw stains of blood in my urine.
It was then that I doubt something is wrong and asked the doctor to come with what all medicines he gave me and for what. It was then that h aid that he diagnosed TB and started medicines for that. I told him to discontinue the treatment and asked him to give the full prescription and test results and I left to my native place.

I was so weak by then that I sought the help of the lodge watchman to take me to railway station and catch the train. On reaching home, I immediately went to the nearest hospital. They asked me to get admitted, which I did not accept and instead undertook to visit doctor everyday. After detailed clinical and lab investigations doctor said I did not have TB , but just viral fever. He said the doctor was misled by the unclear X-ray, the deceptive skin test result. Most of the symptoms I had were also similar to the TB case too. Hence the previous doctor jumped early to conclude the diagnosis instead of going for further fine testing and elimination method.
I was advised rest and had ben given supportive and other symptomatic treatments and I got cured in due course.

Other than this I did no have any case of wrong diagnosis, as mostly my problems are of seasonal common illnesses, Thank God.
The irony is that a doctor who has undertaken study of four or six years with an internship under experienced doctors has to relay o the inferences of tests done by 12 th class passed persons without much or any kind of knowledge and study on the related field.

I think there has to be more improvement in the lab tests and other supportive tests in quality, personnel, precision and technology. Corporotisation of medical sector has made things worse only.

My brother lost his son very early due to a wrong diagnosis by a diagnostic centre. There was a problem with the kid when he was in his 3rd month. He was treated by a local doctor. He correctly advised my brother to take the boy to a specialist in Visakhapatnam. That specialist doctor prescribed some tests to decide on the nature of the ailment and suggested a clinical lab. They got the test done and my brother showed it to the doctor. He treated the boy with no imp[movement. Then he advised my brother to go to a speciality hospital in Hyderabad and the the test results they got in Hyderabad were entirely different. The Hyderbad doctors said that there was a problem with the test report given in Viazg and ultimately the kid expired. When we hear or experience such issues we feel very bad but nothing is in our hands. It is destiny ultimately.

It is a very unfortunate case if a patient is wrongly diagnosed by his doctor due to a wrong pathological report issued by a pathological lab. Such irresponsible reporting could lead to wrong medications and unnecessary side effects.
What I would like to add is that the consulting doctor must apply his mind while examining a patient how far the report issued by the laboratory is correct.
Earlier the doctors were diagnosing the disease based on their examination. However, prescribing a pathological report was the double way of checking the disease. In the past, doctors were experienced enough to assess the correct ailments through their medical examinations. There was no tie-up between a doctor and a pathological lab.

I once visited a reputed central government hospital in Delhi and I saw that Junior Doctors always seeked the help of an experienced Doctor before making any conclusion regarding the lab reports. Only after getting the nod from a experienced doctor the treatment plan got confirmed. So, I think patients should always consult an experienced doctor before taking any final decision.
    Thanks and regards.

It is difficult to find out about the knowledge and experience of a particular doctor and we have to believe what other people say about him. So if his reputation is good and there are good number of patients seen in his clinic then we can infer that he might be a good doctor.
Even after that, medical science is a very complicated area and even a good doctor can err in his judgement about the problem. In such cases diagnosis might not be correct.
Most of the doctors or specialists ask the patients to get some tests before a diagnosis could be made. Doctors do it for financial gains also.

Face is the index of the mind. It is true in the case of your visiting Doctor too. You can rate the treatment in the first visit itself based on the diagnosis and evaluation of the tests suggested by him. A very good doctor would first try to control the problem first to bring stability of the health and would monitor the results in the next one or two visits. For example, the BP readings or the symptoms of Diabetis would be confirmed only after a through evaluation for three months with proper suggestions. In case, the doctor starts the treatment in a hurry means you should go for a second opinion. This is just an example but not a thumb rule for all ailments.
