Worshipping is an ancient version of meditation

We all know that meditation has become very popular these days. Meditation is the process of focusing our attention on ourselves. It is an ancient practice. There are many other names such as concentration, sitting in silence, or contemplation. Meditation is useful to relieve stress, reduce blood pressure, enhance concentration, and help in dealing with life's challenges

In many of the Hindu families, worshipping God is a common process in the mornings. When we worship a God we should focus our attention on that process only and we should detach ourselves from the worldly matters around. In this process also one should focus their attention on their mind only.

As such I feel worshipping is an ancient version of meditation. Do you agree?

Not only worshipping but there are many such activities that can be compared with meditation. The basic framework of meditation is focus, concentration, and temporary detachment from the materialistic world. Anything that provides us that premise is meditation.
Worshipping is an age old method of offering prayers to the almighty and thanking him for keeping us safe and sound. Those who believe in God, it is a great way to meditate. The mind is totally focussed in the prayers and for some time the person gets away from all the worldly problems.
I had seen some old people in my village reciting some religious songs closing their eyes and they do it in such a deep way that it is akin to meditation.

    Knowledge is power.

I would request the author to please clarify. How is worshipping an ancient form of meditation? Please detail the difference between worshipping and meditation. I suggest you give a logical and convincing response.

Saji Sir has said: "I would request the author to please clarify. How is worshipping an ancient form of meditation?"------------------- I would suggest that it is a very high level of discussion. Those who don't understand the concept, should leave the issue.

Yes, worship is a type of meditation. But worship has more benefits than doing meditation merely controlling the breath. It is better to do meditation remembering God and pray for the well-being of all living beings. It gives tremendous power to concentrate.

Worship requires focus and concentration. Without these two if we sit before God chanting something is of no use. This is what I learned from my elders in my family. Again I learned that meditation is also all about focus and concentration. That is why I made this statement. In our epics it was mentioned that many Rishis used to perform Tapassu for years together with a lot of focus. That is why I made this comparison. If Saji feels that my explanation is not correct, he can correct me

The major command to our mind for meditation is 'sit'. It is very difficulty to sit for meditation and even if we sit our mind will wander over many places without control. Our Spiritual Guru used to tell 'sit' for meditation rest automatically gradually reach us. Meditation is really a needy process to a human especially in the present scenario where we all live totally with stress in somehow or other.
The author word is really superb. In those days our elders making us to visit temples or worshipping places regularly as that is the place where we at least concentrate our mind to some minutes. Gradually this leads us to increase to visit and 'sit' in the temples or worshipping places. If our elders advised us to sit for meditation for some hours or minutes daily, we would have escaped ourselves from their vision. But when they took us to the worshipping places our mind starts to taste the difference of inside and outside world of worshipping places.
In our childhood our grand mother used to take me and my elder brother daily to upanyas in temple. This makes us to know many stories of epics even now comparing to any other persons. It is a proud to us because of our grandma. Now how many children are coming with us to temples or pooja places?
Even as pointed out by the author, the celebrating poojas in the house daily or at the festival times also leads us to train to sit for meditation.

I think prayer would be a better choice for meditation. Worship is something different where the idea is to place someone on a higher pedestal. We pray seeking for blessings, in different ways, and while doing so we (should) concentrate on what we are thinking and to whom we are seeking. I suggest our members to please think about the topic seriously and post your responses after a careful analysis.

As Partha has said, it requires a high level of discussion. So, let us go for it (or should we leave it as Partha suggested?).

In my opinion, prayer is also a part of worship. One can worship God by praying to Him. While posting this thread, I also thought about whether to use worship or prayer for a long time. Finally, I decided to go for the word worship as prayer is a part of worship. We can worship God in different ways. Praying is one of those ways. Uttering the name of God many times is known as Smarana. Writing the name of God is also a way of worship. We all know many people write RamaKoti. All these are types of worship only. Whatever way we worship we should do it with concentration and focus on what we are doing.

Meditation is usually associated with Yoga and worship I think is a way to express gratitude towards the almighty. People in India worship God because they believe in them to fulfill all their wishes. Meditation is altogether a different term, which is mainly about focusing and keeping our mind away from any sort of distraction. Yoga is a form of meditation that has been part of Vedic lifestyle and it helps in keeping our mind calm. In a fast pace life these days people don't find enough time to keep their mind relaxed and that's the reason Yoga is becoming popular among working class. It may be an ancient form of meditation, which later turned into Yoga but there is a lot of difference between the two terms.
Humble yourself or life will do it for you!
