Would you prefer an inferior Made in India product over a branded foreign product?

There is a constant discussion regarding Made in India products and the government usually encourages people to buy products that are Indian made. Still people do what they like and buy an iPhone or any brand which is considered not only superior but also a status symbol in Indian society. If you have phone made by an Indian company people will think you are a poor man who can't afford a branded product. These things are quite common in school or college going students. There was a company named Micromax a decade ago and their products were selling during the Nokia era but now they are almost invisible. I don't know why but people in India focus more on branded products from foreign country and they consider Indian made products inferior. What do you think?

As far as I am concerned, I will go for a quality product, irrespective of Made in India or Made abroad, available in my budget. If I want to buy a phone, first I will decide what will be my budget for this. Once I decide on this, I will see what are the phones available in that budget. Decide on the best product after discussing it with my sons and reading the reviews etc, I will decide on the brand. I used an iPhone and I also used a Micromax phone for some time. One should see whether the product is worth the money he is spending on it.
The mindset will also change as you grow old. A young person who started earning recently will have a different mindset and a grownup person will have a different mindset. This is very natural. My two sons always look for brands only. They never mind spending a little more than what they thought for a branded product. But, I always stay myself within the budget limits only predecided by me.

Most of the Indian customers buy the products based on price as well as quality. Only a few will go for very costly quality items.
So, price differential between a make in India and branded foreign product would decide which one is to be bought.
Rich people need not to bother and straight go and buy the desired product but middle class people will think twice before making a decision like that.
There are people around who buy cheaper items and get them repaired time to time and tell us that in long run that was still a better option then going for a very costly branded item.
I also do not blindly go for a costly branded item if an average quality product is available cheap.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

I have two LED TVs at my home, one is an Indian brand and other is a leading Korean brand. The top Korean brand is a headache for me and it always has some problems every now and then. The LED TV from Indian brand is cheaper and even better with no problem whatsoever until now. So, I can say from my experience is that brand doesn't mean quality and we must give chance to our Indian brands. I remember during 90s we had many Indian brands that were leading the TV market, but now we are flooded with just foreign brands that are just use and throw in the name of quality TV brands. Even when it comes to smartphones some cheaper phones are far better than the overpriced branded products. Only in case of products like ACs and Refrigerators one must choose a tried and tested brand because such electronic items have compressor that can be dangerous.
    Thanks and regards.

I go for a via media approach.
I am not much bothered about brand name or foreign make. I base my purchase o my utility, affordability, after sale service and the pace of obsolesce.

I do not think Indian made products or cheaper are all inferior. In my experience many times the cheaper varieties have served my purpose well and even stayed durable for long, whereas some reputed brand products became useless very soon also.

I had used a three SIM( yes three sims) Chinese made phone many years ago which had many features which even the costly premium models today do not have. It was quite unique and quite affordable. Unfortunately after one year use it fell from my hand into water and rocks ( after many such falls previously too) and got damaged .
So even some local products can be of god quality and at affordable cost too. We have to be practical and prudent too.

This is a very interesting post and we often encounter the situation in our lives when we have to decide that whether to go for a costly branded product or go for a cheaper mediocre one.
In this reference I want to mention that many branded products are over priced and their MRP is on a higher side. That is the reason that when their sales go down they come up with heavy discounts attracting the gullible customers. The positive side with branded products is that they may last long and have the promised quality. On the other hand the cheaper products have no warranty of that sort.
Normally I go for mediocre products except when quality is the primary issue. My experience is that if properly handled and maintained even the average products give good service.
For food products we should not follow this approach as average products may have adulteration and other problems like shelf life, etc.
So depending upon the category of items we have to decide whether to go for branded or normal.

    Knowledge is power.

It is not necessary that a brand produced from a reputed foreign- company would be my choice. However, most of us opine that the branded products of the foreign countries are not cheap even. The service of such products might not necessarily be pocket - friendly but we are influenced with our friends and colleagues.
However, on using the branded products, we might lose the charm which we have had in our mindset. The best approach would be to look out for the Indian Firms and should discuss among our known friends regarding their opinion. Products of Indian Firms are cheaper but they don't compromise with the quality parameters.
In that sense, I am satisfied with the cheaper products available in the market but I ensured the performance of such products from my friend - circles.

I have personal experience of many instances where 'desi' product performs much better than branded 'foren' products. My 'desi' iron performs much better than branded iron. Our locally-made cooler may be odd shaped and makes sound, but it is giving much much better service than another branded cooler in our home. However, in case of AC, my experience is opposite.

So, we cannot make a sweeping generalisation in this regard. Some may say that to raise such issue reflects a deep-rooted inferiority complex.

There are many desi brands that give much better performance. For example, I have ceiling fans of Bajaj brand which are running for the past 20 years without any problem. Even during the 90s we had an Indian brand TV called BPL that was very popular among customers. Even we have world class Air Conditioning brand like Voltas and Bluestar. We are just lagging the smartphone department where none of the Indian brand actually made any impact. In all the consumer products Indian brands are rocking and competing with international brands without any problems.
Humble yourself or life will do it for you!
