Have you ever participated in some kind of volunteering activities?

Sometimes we have a desire to do some volunteering work. It could be in a group or alone. Nowadays many agencies make a call for some volunteering work like plantation, cleaning of surroundings or parks, painting on the city walls at places, helping poor people by providing them clothes or other needs, etc.
After doing or participating in such activities one feels satisfaction and happiness of a special kind and that itself is the reward for that work.
Have you ever participated in some kind of volunteering activities? How did you feel after completing it? Share your experiences.

In our town outskirts there are hills rising to the north-eastern side and good greenery is there. People often go there for morning walks. Some of our friends suggested to plant trees there just before the rains so that they grow nicely. The area is very big and we choose some places near the road so that we could take care of these plants later also. I joined for this volunteering work and one local municipal official provided us a small water tank for watering the plants till rain arrives.
About 10-12 people contributed in that and we had planted a good number of trees in the area and most of them have survived.
Whenever we go there we see those plants and feel happy about it.
While doing that activity we happened to meet another group of people who were planting trees in the same area in some other place which was hardly half a km from our plantation area. They told us that they were doing it for quite some time and had planted hundreds of trees.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

When I was working in an organisation, we decided that we could do whitewashing for the school buildings in the nearby village. We have informed all the employees about this programme and asked them to give the names of those who are interested in participating in this service programme. We took up the job on a Sunday and we went to school. Some workers are well-versed in painting jobs. They started doing the whitewashing work and some people mixed the paint as required. I helped them in handing over the paint required collecting the empty tins and also giving them water etc to drink during the work. We all had lunch together and by evening we had completed a single coat of whitewashing to the entire school building. Like this, we did painting works for a total of 4 schools in 4 villages around our factory.
My elder daughter-in-law participates very frequently in some or the other volunteering work. She reached for some time in a government school under the Teach for India programme organised by an NGO.

Let me share my experience in this regard. There are two activities which are well mentioning. One belongs to my childhood and other to 6-7 years back.
First is when I was about 14 years old and was living with my grandmother in the village during weekends. In my village there was a practice of doing volunteer work on Sunday morning for about one hour. Many villagers - adults as well as children participated in it. Every Sunday we would clean the lanes and paths in the village and remove any garbage or tree waste. Sometimes we will arrange books and clean the racks in village library. Once we cleaned inside the village temple and its surroundings.
The second activity was when I was 64 years old and living in Navi Mumbai. Near our house there was a park and senior citizens came there for walking or chit chatting in the morning. Some seniors suggested that one day we all would clean the park and remove the garbage and dry tree leaves, etc from it. After 3-4 days we all assembled there in the morning and in about one and half hour we made the place clean. After that we periodically did it almost once in a month. The park was brought to good shape and then municipality took control of it and nowadays they are maintaining it.

    Knowledge is power.

Yes, I enjoyed my childhood with a lot of fun engaging myself to teach the students up to class ten level when I was a student of St . Xaviers College, Ranchi. I was then eighteen years old and returned to my village after two years. There were a lot of interested students to get their guidance in Mathematics and Science Subjects residing in the villages.
I made a systematic plan of coaching such needy students involving a group of five colleagues who were invited to take up this great mission to teach the students of a batch of six students in different locations. Altogether, we were six - all from different colleges but our mission was to remove their fear of science subjects.
Though the starting phase was not encouraging later, an encouraging response was noticeable. We formed batches of students consisting of six and altogether eight batches were operated.
The results of the students of all batches were quite impressive due to the great enthusiasm of our colleagues. Fortunately, the students secured admission to the reputed colleges of different locations.
