A belated quiz after the Rathyatra festival

Yesterday (7th July 2024) was Rathyatra. However, members of ISC (including myself) were extremely busy to remember this auspicious day. I had to attend two Grihapravesh ceremonies yesterday, so, even though I remembered the day very well, I did not get opportunity to raise any thread. At late hours when I logged in to ISC, I did not feel like raising any post on this topic.

I earnestly hope that Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra would forgive me. Now, I would like to initiate a small and simple quiz on the occasion of Rathyatra. The questions are given below:-

    (a) What is the name of the chariot of Lord Jagannath?

    (b) What is the name of the chariot of Lord Balabhadra?

    (c) What is the name of the chariot of Goddess Subhadra?

    (d) Which wood is used in Jagannathdham (Puri) to make these chariots?

    (e) What is Gundichabari?

The first member who will answer these five questions correctly, will receive a gift from this humble member.

My answers for the above questions are.

    (a) Nandighosha or Garudadhwaja or Kapidhwaja
    (b) Taladhwaja or Langaladhwaja
    (c) Darpadalana or Devadalana or Padmadhwaja
    (d) Neem wood
    (e) Gundichabari means House of Gundicha. Gundicha was Queen of King Indrayuma, the founder of Lord Jagannath Temple. She was a devotee of Lord Vishnu.

Humble yourself or life will do it for you!

Most of us have some kind of mythological knowledge but India being a large country, people of one area may not have the knowledge of all the temples, their deities, and things related to them.
In that context this is a valuable thread to give opportunity to the members to learn these things about the famous temple in Puri, Odisha.
Honestly speaking, I am only aware of the first question in this quiz which I happened to read few days ago when I was going through the details of Rath Yatra in our town where we all were invited.
As per the tradition deities are brought from the temple to the respective chariots and Nandighosa is the chariot of Lord Jagannath.

    Knowledge is power.

My answers to the questions are as below.
    1. Lord Jagannath's chariot's name is Nandighosh
    2. The name of the chariot of Lord Balabhadra is Taladhwaja
    3. Devi Subhadra chariot is called Darpadalana.
    4. The wood used for making these Chariots is known as 'Phasi Wood'. This wood is used for making some parts of the chariots. Bhaunra and Asana are the two types of wood that are also being used for making parts of chariots. The Odisha government supplies this wood to the temple every year free of cost.
    5. Gundichabari is the destination of the Ratha Yatra. I understand that this is the house of the maternal aunt of Lord Jagannath. The idols of these three Gods will be kept here for 9 days ( Including commuting days to this house and back to the temple). This building has four components.
    1. Vimana (tower structure containing the sanctum),
    2. Jagamohana (assembly hall),
    3. Nata-mandapa (festival hall)
    4. Bhoga-mandapa (hall of offerings).

This is a very informative post giving much mythological information about the Lord Jagannath and related matters about the famous temple in Puri, Odisha.
Many people may not be aware of these things and feel curious about them during the religious celebrations.
Rathyatra in Puri is a time when a large number of devotees and tourists reach here to celebrate.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Now, it's time to declare the result.

    Only four members responded.

Ajay Gupta Sir was the first member who attempted this. But he made one mistake. His answer to question (d) is not correct. So he has missed the virtual gift.

Dr.Rao Sir has answered all the questions correctly. Not only that, he has also explained the significance of Gundichabari and described the detailed structure and significance of Gundichabari.

So, Dr. Rao Sir. will receive the virtual gift from me.

Let us all congratulate Dr. N.V. Srinivasa Rao for winning this quiz.
