Interview of SSG, the leader of the support team of Chess World Champion VA

Friends! The chess-enthusiasts know that India's VA has been declared the Chess World Champion by FIDE when he defeated MC in the final of World Chess Championship held at Oslo, Norway. After the final, VA heaped praises on his support team, especially the team leader, SSG.

Some of us know that SSG is himself a Grandmaster. But he left the arena of competitive chess quite early. He joined the support team of VA and is instrumental to help VA to become World Champion.

After the tournament, SSG has now come to his home-town, Kolkata. I met him and asked a few questions.

PK (Interviewer): Hi SSG, Congratulations to you as the leader of the support team of VA. VA has won the prestigious title. How did you help VA in his preparation?
SSG: Thank you. It was an elaborate preparation. We started our preparation for this tournament more than three months before. As the team leader, I had to study different opening moves, middle games and end games. We developed separate strategies for playing with white and for playing with black.
I had to study different opening moves and how to counter the attack of the opponents. VA, other staff and myself had to study a lot during the preparation period. It took more than 7-8 hours everday. Not only that, at night, I used to play preparatory matches with VA. VA also played regularly against the computer during this period.

PK: What challenges did you face during the tournament?
SSG: Every match was a challenge. We had to prepare separately against each opponent considering individual playing style. Moreover, VA and some other members suffered from cough & cold during the tournament due to the extreme weather at Oslo. Finally, the final match against MC was a real challenge. MC fought really well but thanks to our preparation, ultimately VA won.

PK: So, what is the next target?
SSG: VA is supposed to play the World Rapid Chess Championship at Barcelona in March. Immediately after my return, we will start preparing for that tournament. I hope VA will win the Rapid Chess Championship also.

PK: Best wishes to all of you. Thank you.

Recently some Indian chess players have performed very well in international tournaments. The author of this post has conceptualised this creative question answer sequence based on that background.
Chess is a game of strategy and there are complexities in it because a single mistake or wrong move can make the player lose the game to the opponent.
The support team has a great role to play and the credit that the player wins a match can be attributed to a good degree to the hard work of the support team. Support team for any player is the 'people behind the show' and is the backbone of the contesting player.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Chess is not an easy game especially when one has to compete against the international level players. A good player will foresee the future moves of a game and protect himself accordingly. At the same time he has to make moves which are difficult for the opponent to decipher.
Chess has three distinct phases of playing - opening, middle game, and endgame. Every phase is equally important and requires full attention. The support team has to work hard to find out all the permutations and combinations possible in these phases and apprise the player accordingly to keep abreast him of all the options possible during the actual play.
During my student life I learned chess but found it an extremely complex game. More you play and learn the tricks, more you feel that still you are much behind.

    Knowledge is power.

The success of a team in any game or sport depends very much on the field staff. In individual events, the candidate's performance depends on his support team, which makes him ready to participate and fare well in the tournament. Many times we see the winning team praising their support staff.
In the game of Chess, the role of support staff is critical. How a coach or his staff bring change in the thinking pattern of the player during preparatory matches makes all the difference. The leader of the support staff will have to make a strategy in consultation with the player for the game and these strategies should be applied during the practice matches. The strategies should be decided to keep the opponent in mind and they should study some of the earlier games of the opponent I feel.
The author made a good attempt to bring out a good interview with the support staff of a winning team.
