Never allow perceptions to cloud your mind
Some ten years ago, this true incident opened up many minds of so many people. There was a vacancy of a junior supervisor in the warehouse of a major manufacturing organisation in the same area.Such positions are never advertised. The references come from contacts and there was a call from my friend who then worked as HR Chief in that organization. When my attention was drawn to a very young man who was also known to the HR Chief, and now working in a fairly good organisation some sixty kilometers away, we contacted him and convinced him about the new opportunity. The designation was Executive --Supply Chain Mgt and his role would be enhanced. So would his salary which was expected to see a sixty percent hike.
Everything fell into place. The young man did very well and was selected. The catch came when his community details were noted. The then CEO had a taste of some bad medicine in the form of highly disruptive trade union activity, due to a political outfit that dominated that particular area. The father and son combination is well known to represent a highly caste based outfit.
The background check of the candidate indicated that his community background had nothing to do with his performance. In his work, he was always very sincere, honest and was seen to be a no-nonsense kind of a person.
The CEO agreed to take in the young man in good faith. The young man went on to do an online MBA with supply chain management specialization. Today, he heads the entire supply chain operations of two units in a bigger city, in the same organization.
The CEO was not only doubly happy that he found a good candidate, he then started having a good and open mind on every issue. His approach towards the trade union changed for the better and today, the organization that he heads has won awards for peaceful industrial relations on two occasions.
