Never allow perceptions to cloud your mind

Some ten years ago, this true incident opened up many minds of so many people. There was a vacancy of a junior supervisor in the warehouse of a major manufacturing organisation in the same area.

Such positions are never advertised. The references come from contacts and there was a call from my friend who then worked as HR Chief in that organization. When my attention was drawn to a very young man who was also known to the HR Chief, and now working in a fairly good organisation some sixty kilometers away, we contacted him and convinced him about the new opportunity. The designation was Executive --Supply Chain Mgt and his role would be enhanced. So would his salary which was expected to see a sixty percent hike.

Everything fell into place. The young man did very well and was selected. The catch came when his community details were noted. The then CEO had a taste of some bad medicine in the form of highly disruptive trade union activity, due to a political outfit that dominated that particular area. The father and son combination is well known to represent a highly caste based outfit.

The background check of the candidate indicated that his community background had nothing to do with his performance. In his work, he was always very sincere, honest and was seen to be a no-nonsense kind of a person.

The CEO agreed to take in the young man in good faith. The young man went on to do an online MBA with supply chain management specialization. Today, he heads the entire supply chain operations of two units in a bigger city, in the same organization.

The CEO was not only doubly happy that he found a good candidate, he then started having a good and open mind on every issue. His approach towards the trade union changed for the better and today, the organization that he heads has won awards for peaceful industrial relations on two occasions.

When an organisation selects a candidate for an important position then main thing to be considered is the capability of the candidate for functioning well in that position.
Apart from that any apprehension has no meaning.
There are many cases where people from different backgrounds reach high positions but it does not mean that they will not do justice with their work. A capable and smart person would work for the objectives of the organisation and that 8s what decides the future of that organisation.

    Knowledge is power.

What is stressed from the author's side is that an innovative-minded person can change the concept of his higher-ups. Here is an example of how the newly selected candidate was able to change the mindset of his boss with his rational logic.
The boss had a very wrong notion of trade union activity. However, the newly recruited young man as manager was a far-sighted person who not only raised the productivity level of the organisation with his sheer intelligence but even changed the outlook of the CEO relating to a bad impression of the activities of the union.
There was a real transformation of the organisation after the induction of the capable manager.

The selection committee will always assess the potential of a candidate from various angles and if they feel that person may become notorious in the long run due to his suspected affiliation with trade union then they may not select him for a responsible position. However in the above case history mentioned by the author, the candidate belonged to a community or society having linkage with trade union activities but as an individual he was found to be very different and even helped the organisation in dealing with the trade unions in a wise manner.
Some individuals are dedicated to their organisations and do everything for its progress and prosperity. The selection boards should be capable of selecting such gems.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

It is a very strange thing to me. In a private organisation, a CEO thinks about the community of a candidate, I never heard of. I have seen some companies in Hyderabad where the CEO appoints their community persons in high positions. But we see all community persons in junior positions. If we appoint people with no proper knowledge for the sake of the community, the organisation may not take off and finally the company will end up with losses. So efficiency and capability should only be considered for appointing a person.
A person who is sincere and works for the company will be always rewarded. When the organisation is suffering how can an employee expect a good salary and perks? Dedication and belongingness are the two key traits required for an employee for his personal growth as well as the growth of the company, I feel.
These days trade union activities are reduced and people are concentrating more on their personal and family growth and trying to work hard and get maximum benefits, I feel.

Prejudice should be the right word for such behaviour where we form an opinion about someone. It is a common behaviour in India where people judge by the surname of a person. It is a casteist mentality that has plagued India from ancient times and your talent doesn't matter if you belong to a particular caste or community. Private sector in my opinion is not plagued by this mentality because they want their organization to grow. If someone is not skilled enough then what's the use of hiring him irrespective of his caste or community? If corporates start following such selection procedure then they will be doomed for sure. In my view only skill and experience of the candidate should matter during selection process.
    Thanks and regards.
