Make many changes to your resume

As a former HR Chief of a huge organization, I now counsel dozens of candidates on what they should do, given the kind of challenges that they are bound to face in their working lives.

For example, the reality of Artificial Intelligence is always upon us. It is already there everywhere. At least a certificate course is a must. And then one needs to look around for the application of AI in whatever field one works in. Be it Finance or HR or Supply Chain Mgt or Marketing or whatever.

Secondly, within one's domain, attending the paid webinars on various new developments is a must. The moment we see grey hairs in our scalp, we better double up our energy. Some new Wiz kid is alive and kicking in the neighborhood to make us look outdated. For example, a basic certification in NLP and Life or Executive Coaching is a must for every HR executive.

Such changes are bound to become more of Norma within the next 36 months. The new mantra is upgrade or become totally irrelevant.

    A B Sivakumar,

It is all very well to say this and that is a 'must'. Yes, it does help to upgrade one's knowledge and skills, but not everything is free. Even a one-month certificate course may be expensive and it is not necessarily the case that the company will sponsor it. Besides, one does need to have the time to pursue it while not letting go of an existing job. Don't forget aptitude and the ability to understand. Not everyone would find it easy to pick up what is taught, and it may just be a waste of time and money. Irrelevance comes in even by slacking on the job and not necessarily because of not upgrading.

As for Life Coaching, it seems nowadays every Tom, Dick and Harry are life coaches!!

By the way what is NLP?

The author is trying to illustrate the importance of certifications and skill upgradations in one's career as we are today working in a tough competitive environment. Simple academic degree certifications are not going to help much in the present condition.
I agree with that but the point is to choose a correct and meaningful certification which will really help the student or professional to perform better.
For example Python programming language is getting more and more importance in the IT industry and it makes sense to acquire some sort of certification or proficiency in that.
There are many new areas having different nomenclatures as per the management jargon and acquiring certification in them would be useful for seeking job in the present atmosphere. Choosing a certification itself requires guidance of some experienced person. A student will not be able to select one out of the crowd of offerings made by the educational institutions.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

It is well-known that upgrading our skills is essential these days. This is the age of competition, and we must continue our attempts to survive. But as mentioned by Vandana one should have affordability. Many private companies employ graduates on clerical posts and what is the amount they offer? I know many companies in Hyderabad, which are paying Rs.15,000/- pm to a clerk with some experience. Fresh graduates are working for seven or eight thousand rupees also. In such a financial status spending money for quality improvement will be an uphill task.
Our resume will introduce us to the recruiter. It is the first interphase between the employee and employer. So it should be well written and presented in a better way. These days there are professional resume writers. At the same time, our CV should only talk about facts and there should not be any exaggerations.

Getting a job in the present market seems to be tough unless we present our resume more effectively. The employers don't have the time to see all the relevant certificates procured by the candidates. However, they make it a point to go through the resumes produced by the candidates. An attractive resume where the candidate has included the latest certifications relevant to the job would be treated as the fulfilment of essential criteria for the job.
The candidates may take the help of the professionals available in the computer institutes to make attractive resumes for the aspiring candidates with the payment of a minor fee charged by them. This will enhance the employability status of the candidates.

I also feel that doing some certification or diploma or training course for better job opportunities is a correct thing but today there are a number of courses available and it is not easy to decide which one for to go. One has to have clear ideas about the course and its utility in the coming times.
One problem that is being encountered by many students or professionals in this matter is that if there seems some scope after doing a course then a large number of students rush for that and gradually it creates a surplus capacity in that area and then stagnation starts.
So until and unless the aim of undertaking that course is not very clear in the mind of a person then there is no utility of going through that. It requires a thorough understanding of the objective of doing a particular course.

    Knowledge is power.
