Interview of Dr Anil, a support staff of boxer ASP

Indian boxers are doing well in the international matches and they are having a support team to help and guide them during the combat. Members of the support team have their respective functions. Every member from coach to general assistant is important and it is the cohesive efforts of all that brings a glorious success to the sports person.

One of the members of the support team for a boxer is a doctor who takes care of medical needs of the boxer.

This interview of that doctor was taken by the journalist RKG.

RKG: Welcome to this short interview. How do you see yourself in this job?
Dr Anil: When I was doing my medical course then I never imagined that such a job existed for a doctor. After attaining my degree I started private practice as a general physician. A few years later I got this offer of part time doctor to take care of ASP in general and during the boxing rounds in particular. Though the job looked quite simple but when I was involved in it fully I found it very challenging as we had to be prepared for any eventuality that arises during the combat.

RKG: Can you share your experiences?
Dr Anil: Yes, why not. Main problem that is encountered in such fights is that sometimes the boxer gets exhausted and tired and that is the time that we might had to check the vitals and supplement the boxer with appropriate fluids. Occasionally there had been cases where the boxer gets knocked down heavily and starts bleeding. We have to give first aid immediately. We have to keep the addresses and phone numbers of nearby hospitals or medical centres and in case it is an emergency we had to rush the boxer there.
A few times such things happened and we mitigated that as we were fully prepared having the basic medical kit and other preparations ready on my side.

RKG: Are you happy in this job?
Dr Anil: I am not only happy but enjoying my job. I am being well compensated financially for my services and get all the facilities whenever the team visits other places for a match.

RKG thanked Dr Anil for sparing his time for interview and the interview concluded.

It is an informative post raised by Neeru Bhatt Madam. Indian Boxing team for any international tournament takes a support team which includes a physician. However, in most of the cases, such physician works in SAI (Sports Authority of India) or Boxing Federation of India.

However, professional boxers engage personal physicians on their own.

As mentioned by the author, the main challenge before the physician is to keep the boxers fit and treat the injury during the match as quickly as possible. The team physician also has the responsibility to take the boxer to hospital in case of major injury. Finally the physician works in close tandem with the nutritionist to ensure food which develop muscle sttrength and provide energy, but at the same time keep the weight under control, so that the boxer can compete in the proper weight category.

Overall a good post for the competition.

This is an interesting thing that a doctor is there in the support team of a professional boxer to take care of him during the fight which sometimes could turn violent also.
Role of the members of a support team is to keep the sportsman in good shape by providing him all the facilities and a doctor in the team is a great privilege.

    Knowledge is power.

A well-conducted interview. All these days I have been thinking that a physiotherapist will be there with sports teams to take of their fitness. Now I came to know that there will be a physician.
Sometimes immediate first aid may indeed be required for the performers on the field and such situations explain the need for a doctor in the team. The doctor should be ready to tackle any kind of situation that may arise during the play. He should be ready with all requisites on time there and should get the required things done. That way his role may be very crucial during such tournaments. The replied given by the doctor are very impressive.
