    When you became an expert!

Many of you are experts in your domain and often train newcomers in the domain. That's perfect and that's how things work. We learn things from someone better than us in that specific subject. Since childhood, we have been following the same thing and there is no alternative. Yes, you may learn something of your own to become an expert but when you are stuck somewhere in the learning phase you take help from someone better than you in that domain. Now think of a different situation where you are watching a hot debate on television or a participant in a discussion with your friends/colleagues on some topic of your interest different from your domain. Do you just participate or talk like an expert in those situations?

Let me give you a couple of examples to make things clear. From time to time some topics, mostly telecast through media, get special attention and you will find the discussion on the topic in most of the news channels. Think of demonetisation, tension at the borders or the situation during the pandemic. While the media dealt with the topics heavily during the time we also discussed those topics frequently with our friends and relatives. Well, I also participated in those discussions during the period and interestingly, I found many experts during those discussions, even more experts than the professionals who dealt with them. The same set of people became commandants during the tension at the border, economists during the demonetisation and doctors during the pandemic.

Members, how about you? Do you also become experts all of a sudden after being influenced by someone?

There are some people who are expert in a particular domain. At the same time they also have a general knowledge of other areas and fields. Many areas of knowledge are Inter- related and inter connected. So knowledge in one particular area sometimes helps in learning or understanding things in other areas. This is the overlap which helps a person to participate in the discussions on the other subjects other than his core area.
Having knowledge is one thing but what matters most is applying common sense to different situations in our lives and society.
There are many people who take much interest in discussions in other areas also just by having awareness as what is happening in those areas.
There is no surprise if an expert is able to participate in discussions in other areas other than his area of expertise.
I have often done that quite successfully and believe that there are many like me doing those discussions even in the areas where they are not the experts.

    Knowledge is power.

What the author has explained is quite understandable. Whatever we are doing in our area for an appreciable time, we ultimately become experts in that field. However, this needs constant practice in that field. Mathematics was an interesting subject in my college life.
After joining my duty in the steel plant, I got an opportunity to teach a batch of four students to teach the same sublect. Very interestingly, I could solve the questions of permutation & combination and probability with ease though such problems appeared difficult during my college life. Similarly numerical problems related to Physics could be solved comfortably with the perfect understanding of theritical aspects.
I think expertise is achievable with a little maturity.

People can do specialization in a particular subject or do their masters in it but it doesn't mean that they will become expert of that subject or area. Being expert means to know the things in details and understand the intricacies of a subject. An expert can have the in-depth knowledge in an area and it further increases and his experience slso increases.
Today people are not only confined to a particular area but keep a watch on other fields also and if they are given an opportunity they can also discuss and deliberate matters pertaining to other areas.
I have seen people talking and discussing matters beyond their core areas and some of them are remarkably proficient in that.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

In the internet era you will find many experts around you because there is a lot discussion going on everywhere. Although most people share their own experiences over the internet but people get influenced by it. Some people on the internet are a great source of knowledge and they have helped many people all over the world with their free service available on the internet. For example, I came across a Youtuber who is one of the top celebrity of his domain at present and he is offering free webinars to people who want to learn his skills. After attending his webinar I learned something which nobody will tell you for free. Such people are real gems and you learn a lot from them. In the same way some people will charge you a hefty fee and teach you nothing at all.
Humble yourself or life will do it for you!

Becoming an expert is not that easy, I feel. It requires a lot of commitment and understanding of the subject. Reading some articles or working for 3 or 4 years in a domain will never make a person an expert. A thorough understanding of in-depth knowledge and practical skills in that particular domain only can make a person an expert in a particular domain. So we should not think that we are experts. At the same time, one should not restrain himself/herself from expressing his ideas and views on a particular issue or point. The idea may be accepted or may receive criticism. We have to learn from such criticism. Even we can discuss our odes with people who are more knowledgeable than us. That will become an opportunity to air views and also to get a review of our views from the other people.
So first hear the discussion and then try to participate in the discussion and come out with your ideas. Don't worry if somebody laughs at your ideas. This is what I feel is the best approach.

The role and need of an expert comes only when the knowledge and dat in the specified topic or filed is very large and it needs a conscious in-depth study, experience and exposure in the filed and if possible or needed research on the topic or field. It needs a continuous and consistent study analysis and follow up and updating that general people do not like to involve. Hence whenever need arises such general people look to experts for their guidance and practice.

Earlier, acquiring even preliminary knowledge was requiring time and efforts especially reading books, texts and periodicals. But by the advent and popularity of hand held devices and with their audio and video facilities, knowledge acquiring especially the superficial level knowledge has become relatively easy. So now every one an be a'jack of all trades'. But even now only a few can be the 'Master' of something.

However because of easiness lethargy has set in , and people do not even try to get the superficial level knowledge also. For them those who can give the bits and pieces presented in an attractive way appear as experts.

But still, there are real experts who have spent dedicated time and efforts in acquiring in depth knowledge.
The old adage 'Knowledge is power" still holds good.
