A Grand 5000 crore wedding ceremony!

India's richest businessman Mukesh Ambani's son is getting married and people from all over the world are invited in it. According to some sources the total expenses of this wedding is approximately 5000 crore (half billion dollars). It sounds a huge amount because I don't think anyone in this world would dare to spend so much on a wedding. Even a small cap company in stock market can be bought with 5000 crore. It's a mind blowing amount and should be some kind of a record when it comes to wedding expenses. People in social media are trolling Ambani jokingly that the recent hike in Jio recharge plan is done to compensate the wedding expenses of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant. What do you think? Is it a good thing to spend so much on a wedding?

If a person is very rich he can spend money on his personal functions as he desires. But it showcases a bad precedent for the people who are not very rich or even belong to upper middle class. These people also start feeling that they should also spend more to show their status whatever it is.
Let us come down to the people who are spending 30-50 lakh in the marriage of their children. Is not it a bad precedent from the viewpoint of lower strata of people having income below 8-10 lakhs per annum?
So, there is no yardstick that how much people should spend on the wedding ceremony of their children.
When we spend 10 -15 lakhs in wedding of the children then it looks reasonable to us but when a person spends huge amounts then we become critical.
In my view only a few thousand rupees should be spent by all the people on such functions whatever cause they belong to.

My view is to some extent different in this regard. In entire South Asia, parents spend huge amounts of money in the marriages of their children. In many cases, parents spend beyond their capability and spend lavishly after taking huge loan to meet the expenses of marriage. The situation is same for the ultra-rich, rich, upper middle-class, middle-class, lower middle-class and even for the poor. All over India, the event management companies are having booming business cashing upon this sentiment of the parents.

We don't notice such extravagance in any other part of the world.

Compared to this, Mukesh Ambani has not spent even 20% of his assets in this marriage, although in money term, the amount is huge and beyond the capacity of 99.9% people.

In our country, it has become a practice to spend huge money on marriage functions. There will be a lot of waste of food and other items even in marriages in middle-class and poor people's houses also. Everybody thinks that it is a status symbol and tries to go for false prestige. Even people go for loans and afterwards, it will become a heavy burden to them to clear these loans. That way one should not go beyond their capacity. I agree with Partha that whatever Ambani is spending is from his money only and not going for any loans etc. But spending that much money on a marriage function may be treated as lavish spending only. Tomorrow Adanis may think of spending more than what Ambanis spend.
Instead of spending so much amount on this function, some money can be donated to poor families so that they will be very loyal to them throughout their lives. Anyhow it is their money and they are spending.

I don't think it is a wise thing to spend so much on a wedding even if you are a rich businessman. It is just a showoff nothing else and government needs to put a plug on such lavish weddings because they are nothing but a way to evade taxes. Reliance Industries is under a debt of 3 lakh crore which is mostly taken from Indian banks. These people are very clever because they will ask for corporate loan waiver but will showoff their wealth. It can happen only in India. You will never seen any such wedding in foreign countries because their income tax departments are like hawks they will catch you and penalize you. Government should take note of all these activities and bar businesses to take any loans. People are already noticing the way prepaid recharge plan prices are rising. It is straight out of the pockets of common man funding this lavish wedding.

Many people believe in pomp and show and also enjoy the associated fun. If they have money they would spend it lavishly and make the marriage function memorable.
There are cases where rich people celebrated the marriage function for almost a month and gave gifts to their friends and relatives and also offered them accommodation and food during that period.
I have witnessed marriage ceremonies arranged by some political leaders or Govt servants in high places having expenditures to the tune of 50+ lakhs.
So the point is that if you have it you flaunt it. It is so simple as that.
Many people are critically commenting on the present marriage function in the Ambani family. May be because the money involved is too high a figure.
Incidentally Mukesh Ambani has also distributed sweets to each of the employee working in Reliance.
If one has money one can spend it as one likes. There is no surprise in that.

It is a personal choice of a person to what extent he would spend on the marriage - the occasion of his son. Considering the case of Mukesh Ambani of his huge income from different sources, we don't have anything to say relating to his final decision on his expenditure since it is his personal choice.
I think he might have a different notion of setting an example of the celebration of marriage that the people of the country will remember this historical moment in the years to come. It might be the way of deriving pleasure on this momentous occasion.
    Our blessing to the couple.

Well, I agree that Indian parents usually do whatever in their capacity to make their kid's marriage a grand function. Mukesh Ambani is the richest man in India and it is understandable to spend that much money so that even world can notice the power of an Indian billionaire. Mukesh Ambani is a hardcore businessman and he doesn't do anything without any reason. He has spend so much but I think he will get more than double in return in future.
    Thanks and regards.
