    Know the advantages of MOOC

During those terrible days of lockdown, personal tragedies (I lost my very old parents due to age-related complications in 2020 and in 2021), occasional visits to office and daughter's online classes, life became very boring but tense. At that time, one of my school-day friends advised me to undertake online courses. I heard about Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) from him. On an experimental basis, I completed two courses, the first one on Korean History and the second one on Investment. From that time onwards, I have become a fan of MOOC.

MOOCs offer many advantages which make education more accessible and convenient for everyone. I am trying to mention some of these advantages.

    (i) Accessibility: MOOCs are available online, so anyone with an internet connection can access these courses. This is great for people living in remote areas or those who cannot attend traditional classes.

(ii) Affordability: Many MOOCs are free or cheaper than traditional courses. This makes education affordable for people from all financial backgrounds.

(iii) Flexibility: MOOCs allow the participant to learn at his/her own pace. The participant can study whenever and wherever he/she wants.

(iv) Variety: There is a wide range of subjects available, from technical skills like coding to personal interests like photography or learning foreign languages. This variety means a participant can learn something which truly interests the person or is relevant to career.

    (v) Quality: Many MOOCs are offered by top universities and institutions, providing high-quality education. Participants can learn from experts in the field without needing to attend a prestigious university.

(vi) Networking: MOOCs have forums and discussion groups where a participant can connect with other learners from around the world, sharing ideas and experiences.

(vii) Certification: Many MOOCs offer certificates upon completion, which can be added to the resume. These certificates prove commitment and willingness to learning and improving dfferent skills.

In NEP-2020, the Government has given utmost stress on online learning. Various Government portals like SWAYAM, IGNOU and UGCMOOC and others are doing significant work in spreading online education through MOOC all over the country.

I never heard about Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). But after going through this thread I searched on the internet and found a site with a URL https://www.mooc.org/. I think the author is talking about this site only. This site is an extension of edX.org, This edX.org is a well-known site for online courses. This site offers even custom-made online courses if any corporate company wants to train its staff in a particular area or stream.
The author has given very good information about the advantages of online courses. One important point to note is that all these courses are free. Any person who wants to improve his knowledge in a particular area for career development or changing career can select courses of his/ her choice and learn. If a person is inclined to improve his knowledge or educate further himself there are many ways. MOOC is one such site that gives chance for people to learn.

Dr. Rao Sir has made some important comments. He has mentioned https://www.mooc.org/. But I don't use this site. I use SWAYAM, UGCMOOC and IGNOU courses. I also use iGot Karmayogi portal, which is restricted for Government employees only. I also use Futurelearn.

All the MOOCs are free (as stated by Dr. Rao Sir). However, in Futurelearn, to get physical certificate, a participant is required to pay a nominal fee. In SWAYAM, a candidate is required to pay the Examination Fee after completion of the course and he/she has to appear in an offline examination in the allotted centre. Only after passing the examination, the candidate will get the certificate (which is approved by UGC or other regulatory bodies.

What I mentioned is one of the sites offering many courses online free of cost. As mentioned by Partha there may be many other sites. As mentioned by Partha Sir, certificates given by these open online institutes are approved by UGC.

".......certificates given by these open online institutes are approved by UGC."----------- No, Dr. Rao Sir. Please note that courses of SWAYAM, IGNOU and UGCMOOC are approved. We can't say this about Futurelearn or other organizations offering MOOC. However, their course is approved by the foreign University which offers that particular course.

A very useful information for those who want to acquire knowledge through these online courses. I am aware of one such site called Google Garage.
    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
