What should I buy-desktop or laptop and what specifications

I am using a Windows 10 Desktop PC.
It had undergone many upgradations by adding or changing hardware components over the years. So much so that there is no component from its original purchased status, including cabinet and UPS.

The RAM was 4 GB. But after the last repair servicing it had been reduced to 2GB. Technician said the RAM slot has problem and to improve it the whole motherboard has to be changed.
As per the technician, now my PC cannot be upgraded and to do that, it will be equal to assembling a new PC. I am having Windows 10, upgraded from 8.1. The present configuration cannot support Windows 11.

Apart from the computer going a bit slow, now a days, I face some issues like PC going off while working and not getting started properly and going off. Precisely today, the same issue cropped up. I did some beating and brushing and by sheer luck, somehow made it work today.

So it has become imperative that I go for a new PC. My wife is also is telling me to go for a new one.
    I seek your advice for:
    1. Whether I should go for a Desktop or Laptop?

I use my PC for typing work, email, letters, documents, storing some photos, and general browsing etc. I am doing ISC work in this desktop PC. I do my financial transactions also from the desktop PC as I had Kaspersky Internet Security installed in it.

    2. What should be the minimum configuration and specification for that?

Based on the above given tasks I now do in my desktop PC, what will be your suggestions for my new Desktop/Laptop PC? I would like to buy original Windows.

Upgrading old PCs is a bad choice because you are still running the old processor. Newer OS doesn't run smoothly on older processors. I also have an old PC but I run Ubuntu on it because it can't handle today's internet activities. Ubuntu requires lesser resources and I am able to use internet on an old hardware. It would be better to buy a laptop nowadays because it offers good battery backup. You can also buy a Chromebook if you are only interested in internet work.
    Thanks and regards.

Nowadays many people are going for laptops instead of desktops. The advantage of a laptop is that you can use the same while travelling. I carry my laptop with me and during travelling also I work on that. We can use our data in cell phones to connect to the internet through hotspots. I am not aware of the cost difference. But I have been using a laptop since 2003. Before that for a few years, I used a desktop.
We use it for internet browsing and working on some sites and then email. So we need not go for very high-memory laptops. If you tell your requirement to your technician who is attending to your PC now can tell you about the configuration requirement. Generally, the maintenance problems will be less in laptops and working is also easy. You can go for HP or Lenovo laptops and we may get the same at about. 40,000/ to Rs.50,000/- rupees. We don't require touch screen etc for our normal use.

    Venki Sir
As Babu mentioned above, a Primebook would be a good laptop for your use case. Primebook is a Indian made laptop based on Android OS. They are available in the range of 14000 to 16000 Rupees. Check Amazon to find out more details about the Primebook Laptop.

Regarding the suggestions for Primebook, Chromebook, etc. have they sufficient RAM and storage and can they be used with my manual printer? Can I integrate or transfer my data and files including photos and videos to my them from my old PC?

Can I use my old desktop PC by removing Windows and installing Ubuntu?

    Venkiteswaran Sir,

Chromebook and Primebook usually have internal storage of about 16GB to 64GB and it is more of a cloud storage based OS where you can store your files on Google Drive. It has 4GB RAM minimum and some chromebooks even have 8GB RAM. You need to connect the printer through USB to see if it supports. Many older printer are not supported by Chromebook or Primebook, which can be a issue surely but for internet surfing and other related work it is an ideal choice.

Ubuntu needs minimum 1GB RAM to get installed on any old system. It is recommended to have at least 3GB RAM for better performance. You can create a backup of your Windows and try Ubuntu without any problems. All over the world people are having older PCs which are not fit to use on current Windows edition. People can't throw that older hardware and usually install Linux based OS like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc to revive the old machine for basic usage like internet surfing.

    Thanks and regards.
