Nature's fury being witnessed at Wayanad

Since last few days, Kerala has been witnessing torrential rainfall. But yesterday night/today early morning, the rainfall reached its zenith at Wayanad district of the state. Due to very heavy rain, the hilly district has witnessed repeated landsilides (at least three major ones). Many houses have been completely destroyed. Till now, 106 people have lost their lives. More than hundred are untraceable.

The NDRF team has reached the district. The Army has sent three columns. Airforce and Navy personnel have also reached Wayanad. But the rescue and relief operation has not been progressing well so far due to the continuing heavy rain. As per the Meterological department, the rain with such intensity will continue till Thrusday, or even more.

The Prime Minister has talked to the Chief Minister and assured all assitances. He has also directed the workers of his party to whole-heartedly join the rescue and relief operation.

From Delhi, I am feeling very bad for the flood-affected people of Wayanad. Let us all think how we can help the hapless people of Wayanad. I am sure that they will definitely fight it out.

In our country in many hilly terrains such landslides occur. But they are more common in the areas where loose or uncompacted rocks are there.
If a populated area is caught in the way of these landslides then a lot of men and material are lost. The disaster management team does its best to help the people but seeing the massiveness of some of these disasters it is generally not possible to give full relief.
Our prayers are with the affected people and we wish that the situation would be made under control.

This is a tragic incident and for the same, we were not prepared. As indicated by the author, the death - toll has crossed 140 so far. The figure might be higher since the rescue operation is going on with the joint - efforts of the Army, Navy and Air - force teams.
They are taking every care of the retrieval of dead bodies but continuously pouring rain is itself a daunting task for the entire team. The development is unfortunate.

Very unfortunate. I send my condolences to the families of all the deceased. As per their reports in the channels and newspapers, more than 150 people died and around 140 people are missing. A search operation is going on. The Kerala Government has declared a state of mourning on July 30 and 31. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex gratia payment of ?2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and ?50,000 as compensation for the injured. Food and drinking water provided by the Kozhikode Dist Admin distributed in the affected areas of Chooralmala and Mundakkai by Indian Air Force Helicopters. 572 mm of rainfall is reported in 48 hours up to today at 10 AM. The administration has not anticipated that much rainfall which made the loss more.
The chairman of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP), mentioned that this is a man-made disaster He attributed it to the Kerala government's failure in implementing the ecological recommendations made by the panel.
Human beings think that they can do anything and abuse nature in many ways. Even nature is losing its patience and sometimes showing its fury like this. All of us should learn lessons from such incidents.

My condolences to families who are affected by this tragedy. We humans don't have any chance when nature shows its beast mode. People have to leave that place where such natural calamity is about to happen. There are warnings by meteorological department about upcoming dangers and people have to just listen to the warning and act accordingly. Almost all the coastal areas are sensitive to such furies and we have seen how it has caused devastating effects in places like Odisha, Tamilnadu, Mumbai, Gujarat and now in Kerala. We can just take precautions to save ourself from such calamities.
Humble yourself or life will do it for you!

Today Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated in the Parliament that Kerala Government was given a warning of very heavy rain and possible landslides one week before, but adequate precautionary measures were not taken before the disaster.

The Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, has denied this statement.

This is a very sad incident. In our country during rains such land slides and cloudbursting phenomena are quite common in hilly regions and people are affected most especially in populated pockets.
Govt is helping the people through disaster management teams and armed forces who are doing commendable work for controlling the loss.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

This is not a solitary tragedy caused by man-made creations that erode into the natural surroundings. Similar tragedies are unfolding, and have been in earlier years, too, in other states. Rampant construction activity has loosened the soil and eroded the hills. I read a news feed about the Madhav Gadgil panel report which over a dozen years back issued alerts about construction activities in eco-sensitive areas and clearly focused on the environmental significance of the entire region which is part of the Western Ghats. This report it seems was ignored. Now human lives and homes have been lost. Cloudbursts happen, but tragedies of such a vast scale can surely be mitigated by heeding clear warnings.

Check out this project report for a twin tunnel from Aanakampoyil to Meppadi (one of the major affected villages), specifically the text on page 226 under the heading 'Anticipated Impacts' which talks about "reduced ecological functions of the forest ecosystems as well as economic productivity of the agro-ecosystems" caused by excavations, drilling, blasting, etc-

The tragic thing is that in the haste to build infrastructure, promote tourism, and the like, Governments are not at all concerned with the possible repercussions. Look at what's happening in Maharashtra - a tunnel is coming up beneath the hills of Matheran. No lessons learned.

It is quite unfortunate happening. We can only pray God forbid such tragic happenings. No one can compensate the human loss. We can contribute our mite for the rebuilding of lives of the survivors. At least that we may do.
Instead of nurturing nature, human civilisation actually continues o conquer nature and torture it beyond limits. When such torture goes beyond tolerance even after hints and signals from nature, nature has to react. Many times the consequences are heavy. It is the human greed and the wrong arrogance that humans only have the right for this Earth that brings all these.
