How do you select an application or internet site for a particular purpose?

When we search an internet site or application for a particular purpose then we get so many options and sometimes it is really difficult to choose one for our use. People go through reviews and search engine results but again selecting the best is a challenge. Some applications are free to use while some have premium versions asking for a subscription.
How do you select an application or internet site for a specific purpose? Do you just go by the reviews or test some applications before selecting the one that you feel is quite good? Please share your experiences.

It is an interesting posting from the author's side. We always look for a site which will provide us with relevant information on the topic for which we are genuinely looking to extract information. This can be sorted out either through going through the reviews or taking the opinions of our friends. These operations take time to reach out to a genuine site.
In the initial phase, we attempt to locate the sites independently to find the exact location. Though some free sites provide us with authentic information, we still need more input. Hence we make a lot of efforts to trace out a site containing more information on our assignments. Finally, we choose the premium one as advertised by our preferred site. The premium charges are offset by their genuine services.

We have plenty of options these days for internet sites and applications. We don't have any mechanism to know which site is the best for a particular subject. When we Google for a particular subject we will find a big list. However, the most suitable articles will be shown at the top of the list of search results. So I refer to all the items on the first page and then see which is the best after going through the content. I have three people sitting in my house working in the software industry. My two sons and my brother's son. I will be consulting them in case there is any doubt in my mind. But the majority of the time I will do it on my own.
Coming to the applications. I download only based on the need. But I take the suggestions of my sons and go by their suggestions. I will not download apps without understanding their use. That is why one will find very less apps on my phone.

I have very few apps in my phone. Even most of the pre-installed apps are also not used, and am not able or nt knowledgeable to uninstall those.
Hence I download only very essential apps. But when some need arises for a an app I search the internet. Then I look for these alternatives where the reviews are maximum good, number of downloads are sizable and the size of the app is relatively less. So I select the app which is optimum among these parameters. Till now I had only used free apps.

In case I do not need the app further, I uninstall it also.

There is rating given to each and every apps on the Play Store. If an app has a rating of above 4.5 and downloads over a million, then it is understood that many people like it. I usually download an app through this process and usually the decisions are good. It is all about user experience and if people have some problem with the apps they just write a bad review. It is all transparent out there and not at all difficult to filter the best out of the worst.
Humble yourself or life will do it for you!

I will go by the top results by a search engine in case of internet sites. For applications I rely on Google Play Store. Before using it I generally compare it with few others as there are much variations between app to app.

Let me also share my views on this matter. I spend a good time on searching and selecting a site to work or learn some specific thing. Many sites which initially appeared prospective did not turn out as expected and I used to switch from one to another.
Some of the sites that I found useful from different different activities are - ISC, glg, Google garage, hubpages, kdp, pratilipi, fixya, wikipedia, researchgate, oges, quora, fandom, etc.

    Knowledge is power.

This is just like asking whether a book is good or not. Only after reading a book, we can judge. Similarly, when we search the net, select a few that are nearer to your search of the keyword, go through all of them, and select whichever impresses you the most.
