Old is gold. This is not applicable in the present situation, I think

During my childhood days, people used to say Senior citizens are very experienced and knowledgeable and we should learn from them. Those days the English proverb, " Old is gold' was used frequently to say about the greatness of elderly persons. Many times they used to tell us about their experiences and teach us how we should maintain ourselves.

But over a while, there is a shift in this thinking. The young feel that the knowledge senior citizens have is outdated. This is correct to some extent as there are many technological developments and young people are getting more information through ebooks and the Internet.

That is why I feel the mentioned proverb is outdated and senior citizens should not speak more about their knowledge and experiences with their younger generations. Am I wrong? Please share your views.

I don't think that the young generations cannot be benefited from the experiences of senior citizens who have acquired thejr skills by virtue of their involvement in their jobs.No doubt, their skills are outdated due to the introduction of latest know-how in all the areas of the the technologies.
However, the senior people should not disclose their skiils and knowledge unnecessarily whereas the young technocrats are trying their best to resolve the problem with their acquired experiences.
In that sense, Tata Steel takes a proactive step to consult even the senior people in case some technological assistance is required in the operational processes or maintenance-related issues. They have a pool of experienced staff indicating their residence and contact nos for emergency help.

In my opinion nothing can beat the life experiences and people who have lived long usually have enormous amount of experiences that can be utilised by younger generations. I think every person in their life must have benefited from a piece of advice from an elderly person. I remember during my childhood there was a very strict old teacher in our school. She was very strict and students hated her for it, but now as I came out of school I know that what she was saying was absolutely true and for our better.

Old is gold is definitely a true statement. For example, the music and songs of old movies are masterpieces. You can't replace them and never get bored of them while listening. On the other hand today's music is like use and throw. We listen to it and get bored of it. So, the statement is absolutely true without any doubt.

    Thanks and regards.

By seeing the above two responses I think I am wrong. Anyhow, as a person, I always respect the experience of seniors. However, I am observing many young people who never care for the opinions of their seniors. That is why I raised this thread to know the opinions of other members.

There is no substitute for the experience. It takes time to have that. The young people might be good in handling a mobile or laptop but what is their experience of life? Do they know how difficult is to earn money? Have they seen the rough times? The answer to all these questions is no.
Old is still gold and in difficult situation we go to our elders for advice.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

We cannot say abruptly like this. The present youngsters may not aware about the value of elders but on any account the value of the seniors never come down or get vanished. We are seeing many gold jewel shops, platinum jewel shops, even diamond shops but the use of such shops are only to those who really need. Similarly elders' advise and their presence are definitely needed by youngsters on any one situation and if they are really lucky they will get availed otherwise the loss is to them only.

I read one story in this connection. A prince become a king in a state. On his starting he ordered to evacuate all elderly persons immediately. Every citizen made their elders to stay in the other state. But one person because of his love and affection, hide his father in the underground of his house. After certain period a great problem came to the king. Everybody in the ruling are struggled to search the solution for that problem. This citizen who hide his father casually told the problem faced by the King. The old man very easily told the solution through his experience. The citizen went to the King and explained the solution. Pleased king offered a good valuables and appreciated his talent. The citizen with humble and fear told that the solution told by his father as he hide him by overruling his order of evacuating elderly persons. The King realized his mistake and allowed everybody to bring back the elderly persons and since then he respected every elderly persons.

I am very happy to note the posting by Ramachandran Pattabiraman. One person who believed in the wisdom of his father made the king to realise the value of senior Citizen in the country. Such people are really required in this society so that when a problem comes they can goive valuable inputs.

I liked the way how Ramchandran Patrabitanan was able to realise the mistake of the king when the son suggested a solution as advised by his father for the issue the king was suffering. The solution worked out finally. This was enough to cheer the king.
Ultimately, the king realised his mistake and ultimately, he corrected his wrong decision by allowing them to live in their families.
The story says that the experience earned by an old man could prove to be an asset for all if they seriously implement the advice of the experienced man.
