Why should we celebrate silver and bronze medals won by our Olympic athletes?

Winning an Olympic medal, whether Gold, Silver, or Bronze, is a tremendous accomplishment that brings honour and respect to the nation these hardworking athletes represent. Even those athletes who don't secure a medal deserve our respect for their dedication and effort. Unfortunately, a troubling trend has emerged on social media, where hate groups and negative individuals demean Silver and Bronze winners simply because they didn't win Gold.

Take, for example, our talented athlete Manu Bhaker, who made headlines by winning a medal at the Olympics. Her statement about reading the Bhagwad Gita was widely covered, making us all proud. However, some social media users trolled her, claiming that despite her faith, she didn't secure Gold. Such comments are not only unfair but also filled with negativity.

Similarly, our Javelin star Neeraj Chopra, who previously won Gold, made us proud again by winning Silver. Yet, there were people unhappy with his achievement, feeling that only Gold matters. Neeraj himself has wisely pointed out that while everyone strives for Gold, only the best performer on the day wins it, and we must accept the results with grace.

Silver and Bronze medalists have competed against the best in the world and have achieved something remarkable. Their journey involves years of intense training, sacrifices, and immense pressure. Every medal, regardless of its colour, is a significant achievement that deserves celebration.

It's time to change our perspective on Olympic medals. Instead of focusing only on Gold, we should appreciate and celebrate all our athletes, no matter the medal they win. This not only shows respect for their hard work but also encourages others to aim high, knowing their efforts will be valued.

Let's come together and express our support for all Olympic athletes. Demeaning these achievements is harmful and unfair, and we should stand against it by celebrating every success, big or small.

Let's understand the negative impact of demeaning these achievements and how it affects our athletes. What are your thoughts on this issue? Share your views on why it's important to respect and honour every effort made and every medal won by our super athletes.

The amount of money government is pouring into these athletes is enormous and there should be results in the form of medals otherwise there is no use of wasting money on sports. India is becoming a laughing stock whenever they participate in Olympics.

Kenya is a country in Africa and you know how many Gold Medals they have won? 4 Gold medals for Kenya with a top 20 finish in medals tally. Ukraine, a war torn nation has got more medals than our country. Even a small Caribbean island nation produces world beaters.

There should be questions raised or there is no need to participate at Olympics. It is not a vacation for athletes, they have to perform because country's reputation is at stake. China was once behind India in terms of economy and now they are competing with USA. India is nowhere near in competing with top sporting nations . Even smaller nations are better than our country.

Thank you for participating, Gupta ji.

I understand your frustration. Indeed, huge investments in sports should ideally result in better performances and more medals. Comparing India to other nations, especially those with established sports systems, highlights where we need to improve. However, building a stronger sports culture takes time.

I would also like to point out that our players who had brought medals in previous Olympics did receive even better treatment and investments for ahead to train even better in future tournaments. Thus it can be said that investments alone don't decide how a player would perform in the end. When comparatively less was invested in them, even then they secured medals.

Our athletes are working hard, and while we may not be at the top every single time yet, we should support their efforts and continue working towards better results. This time, perhaps the players from other nations had an edge in luck and preparation.

    Mr. Ank Arya,

Going by your point Indian government should stop investing in sports? Even I have a opinion that government should stop wasting taxpayers money on sports because India will never match the performance of top sporting nations. We are a nation filled with cricket fans and Olympics is at the moment only about Javelin throw. Badminton was gaining some popularity but now the performance at current Olympics has heavily dented it.

Most of the athletes India send to Olympics merely qualify for the events and they are nowhere near to winning any medals. The whole world says North Korea is a poor nation but still they have performed better than India. You will be surprised to know that North Korea sent only 16 athletes and they won 2 silver and 4 bronze medals. They are placed above India in medals tally. India on the other hand send 116 athletes and won 1 silver and 5 bronze. So, technically North Korea is one of the best performing nations at Olympics in terms of medals per athlete. India should also take this approach and send only top contenders who have a chance of making to the finals.

Athletes and sports persons try their best to get gold medal. But there is stiff competition and only one person will emerge as the gold winner in a sports or game. In such a situation the Silver or Bronze winners also become very important because they are our only hope of getting Gold one day.
Undermining the Silver or Bronze winners is in bad taste and anyone who is demeaning them in social media is doing it under a grave misunderstanding of the matter.
We, all the citizens of India feel proud about the medal winners of our sports persons in international matches and the day is not far when we would have many Gold medals also.

    Knowledge is power.

Getting a chance to participate in the Olympics itself is a big opportunity. Very few people will get this opportunity and we should appreciate them for that itself. All participating members can't win Gold. So all the people who can't win gold stop participating, who will be there to compete. Winning silver or Bronze is also a difficult task. We should appreciate and honour those players who won these medals. This is my opinion.
In India, politicians play an important role even in the selection of players in big events. That is leading to some biased decisions and leading to problems. So only experts in the field without any personal interest should be made members of the selection committee and they should select based on the merit of the individual.
Another issue is corruption in India. The funds that are allocated for sports are not being used properly and getting diverted to the pockets of the individuals. This is also an issue to be seen seriously.

We all expecting appreciating wife on her cooking whether it is super or not though it is their regularity. Further it is told by a teacher that appreciating a student with star even for his/her correctness in sums is highly a motivation.

In a village of North India, a father celebrates grandly when his son passes higher secondary with normal marks. On questioning he told everyone that he is the first son in his family gone to school to that level.

So, celebrating the winners of medals in Olympic games is not wrong as it is a great thing to our country and it is a kind of a motivation.

    Ank Arya,

This is not a disturbing trend on social media and such comments are visible in every field be it sports or education. Social media is a place where a lot of people will post their views on a specific issue. Some may seem unethical or illogical but when there is a platform to express views and when the platform is open to all we cannot stop them, right? If we look around, in many cases we will find that others look down on students who cannot clear the exams despite their efforts. Maybe the same set of people cannot accept silver or bronze medals won by our athletes in the Olympics. People have different perspectives and different expressions so, better not to think of this as a new trend.

I echo the views of Dr.Rao in his response above. The internal politics and political interventions also contribute for underperformance of our team in International events. We have very good talent in various fields of the Sports and unfortunately much importance is given to Cricket. I don't hesitate to talk like this, though I like cricket most and my self played the game during my college and University times. It may be due to much Fan following and revenue generation which we can't rule out. But games like Hockey and Football too enjoy the same status but they don't flourish well as compared to cricket.

I strongly suggest the tournaments like IPL should be extended to other Sports and Atheltics too, so that practice can be made along with international players which would help to get prepared for next Olympics. For that matter, BCCI and other sports authorities should come forward to encourage such sports events as there is no scarcity for funds. It is just like the Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam (TTD) Trust undertaking renovation of old temples in the Telugu states and other parts of India and Travancore Trust taking care of the other temples in Kerala. It is just a suggestion. Even the Sports ministry should think of such moves to promote the young talent in the country.

What is mentioned by Jagdish Patro is correct. Indian people give more importance to cricket. Once upon a time, the Indian Hockey team had a top reputation. But due to a lack of encouragement, the talent in that game came down. BCCI is very rich and has good money. They should also encourage other games and sports and bring popularity to those games. There is talent in India. So they should be mentored properly so that skilled players will get the required support.

This cannot be denied that the Indian players have enough talent in the areas of sports. However, it has been observed that they show some sort of hesitation in the initial stage. Once they start playing they can earn a reputation be it cricket, hockey or otherwise. Their talents can be nurtured in the school - stage with the encouragement of the game - teachers in the beginning and then they will be stimulated enough to show their talent.
Not all families encourage their kids to choose a career in the Olympics and that is the greatest impediment.
While judging the performance of our players in the recent game, our players have secured Silver and Bronze medals and they must be appreciated for their efforts. Encouragement from BCCI and other sports authorities will further boost the spirits of our players.
