Skeletons are tumbling out of the dirty closet of Malayalam film industry

Justice K. Hema Committee report on the issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry, has been published on Monday, 19th August 2024. The committee report has been published five years after it was submitted to the Kerala State Government. The report has revealed horrid tales of sexual exploitation, illegal bans, discrimination, drug and alcohol abuse, wage disparity and in many cases, inhuman working conditions for female workers.

We came to know about the malaise of the Malayalam film industry also from many other sources. In a 2018 TEDx Talk, actor Rima Kallingal clearly pointed out the terrible problems which have been destroying the Malayalam film industry.

But the autocratic Marxist state government tries to put the terrible conditions being faced by the Malayalam film industry under the carpet. However, I feel it is the duty of innumerable Malayali film fans to raise their voices against such inhuman practices to strengthen the industry so that this prestigious regional film industry continues producting meaningful and popular films and also to ensure welfare of femal workers engaged in this industry.

Justice Hema commission report sent shock waves not in the Malayalam Film Industry but also other language film Industries. Some supported and some disagreed as usual. The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) has expressed shock over the revelations in this report. They wrote a letter to general secretaries of member associations and mentioned that they would support the government in taking action to curb such practices in the industry.
The report mentions that a 15-member power group is controlling the entire Malayalam film industry. The government should get into the details and see that these illegal practices will be stopped and all will get a uniform chance to showcase their skills.
This report should be taken seriously be all other film industries also and see that such issues will not happen in their areas of work. Otherwise, the women will be suffering a lot in this industry.

Dr. Rao Sir has aptly stated: "The report mentions that a 15-member power group is controlling the entire Malayalam film industry. "-------------Male chauvinism has been around for years in the Malayalam film industry. As for example, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) General Secretary, old man Siddique, himself faces a rape and assault charge against a budding actress. Siddique was accused of raping a woman way back in 2019 when the #MeToo movement was at its height! He resigned from the post of General Secretary of AMMA on this very same allegation only on 24th August 2024.

Please read the following news-item (appeared in the Times of India, Kochi) to know the details of the case:

Now, the most famous Malayali actor Mohanlal has resigned as the president of AMMA. It is said that he is forced to resign because he could not control the womaniser Siddique, who was the General Secretary of AMMA.

This is very clear that there are problems in Malayalam film industry especially when it comes to the treatment of women folks there. In general film industry anywhere is known to be affected by the underground criminal groups as well as mafias. This is the main reason of so much disorder in the film industry.
It is also surprising that our law and order enforcing agencies are not able to resolve the complaints made by the people working in film industry. These people have no other go except obey the controllers managing the industry in one way or other.

    Knowledge is power.

  • #781898
There are certainly a lot of complaints regarding the ill-treatment of ladies working in the film industry. However, the unfortunate part is that the influential persons have their protection from the upper bosses of the political parties.
We need to support the women folk working in this industry providing them a moral support and arousing their confidence. Whatever is happening in the industry is certainly not tolerable.

  • #781959
I have yet to know the details of the involvement of one actor named Siddique in this case. Why did he resign from AMMA? Can any member having knowledge about Malayalam film industry help?

I have my own doubts about the intent of the thread and highlighting the issue cropped up in a particular state and attributing the laxity on the ruling party is not fair in my personal view. For that matter, such problems in film industry in every state do persist and the 'Me too' movement in the recent past has brought out the dark shade of the Film industry. The Shushant Rajput episode has shown how upcoming stars would be suppressed in the Film industry.

Whatever has happened in Kerala and other parts of the country has revealed the Dark shades that has percolated in the industry and stern action should be taken to protect the women who are working in the industry elsewhere in the country so that the strong message should reach such people who are involved in such mindless carnage.

Patro Sir: Good Evening!!! After a grueling back-breaking day, I was just checking some of the sites where I contribute. I have just seen your response.

Sir, another update. Congress leader Simi Rosebell from Kerala has been expelled after accusing the Kerala Congress of having a 'casting couch' culture. Can we co-relate these two issues, or are these two completely different, but only connected by Kerala?

But I am more interested to know about that womanizer (it is a mild word, the exact word should be ........ in Hindi) Siddique. Why hasn't this man whose first wife committed suicide, been arrested so far by the secular government of Kerala?

Glamour industry like movies, media, and modelling is all about skin show. There are always such kind of issues cropping up every now and then. It doesn't matter what film industry you are talking about, everywhere it is same. Even in Hollywood few years back Harvey Weinstein a producer was convicted for sexual harrasment over a period of 30 years. Many women charged him for sexual harrasment and same is happening all over the world.

Film industry is a dirty industry and most of these people are drug addicts. Just go to a film city and ask for work in the industry, they will not give you any work without any favor. If you don't have any contacts or connections, you won't get any work in this industry. People exploit the innocent girls in this situation and seek favor in return for work. This is the prime reason decent families don't allow their children to work in film industry. We know what happened to Sushant Singh Rajput, he was a brilliant student during his college days but he chose film industry that ruined his life.

    Thanks and regards.

Let us not generalise. The more we generalise, the more the issue gets diluted. I think most of us know this, but even then we generalise so that we don't have to take a stand.

We are actually afraid of speaking the truth and taking a firm stand.

So, what is the truth Partha @ #781990? Does such kind of unfortunate things happen only in Marxist/Congress-ruled states? What kind of truth are you trying to find out in this case? I am sure none of the ISC members are investigating officers and even if they are, they will not divulge the details because everything cannot be made public all the time. The incidents in the Malayalam film industry are quite disturbing and how you are relating it to a specific political party is not clear in any way. In every industry, be it film, telecom or petroleum, there is a political connection and the top bosses of those industries have a good connection with the ruling dispensation irrespective of political colours. I feel social media is the best platform to discuss such 'truths' and media trials. I would request you not to make this discussion political.

    Sankalan Sir, Pranaam!

This post of mine started with the Justice Hema Committee report. The report dealt with the terrible situation of women in Malayalam film industry. So, I feel we should discuss about the film industry of Kerala without generalising the issue.

Next time, if any other committee discusses the situation of women in any other film industry, we will discuss that particular film industry.

Our respected Comrade Pinoo-chacha (Pinaryi Vijayan) sat on this Hema Committee report for five long years. Even now, the complete report has not been published. Should we blame Modi-Shah for this?

I reiterate: Please don't generalise to wilfully dilite the iissue. Let the truth be disected threadbare.

What the author has indicated does not apply to the Malayalam Film Industry alone, but it is true for the entire Film Industry. We have heard so many issues of molestation, assortment and torture of film actresses very often if they want to make a career in the film line.
Though we can boast of our education and manners, the trend of humiliation of women - folk have remained all the same.
There are a lot of girls being victimised only because they want to continue a career in the Film Industries. This needs to be curbed at all the cost.

The only thing I could not understand was why Kerala State government did not release the report of the Hema committee for more than 4.5 years. On August 22nd this year, the Kerala High Court took up a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) demanding the initiation of criminal proceedings against the offenders named in the report. The court ordered the state to place before it in a sealed cover the entire Hema Committee report, including sections redacted for confidentiality. Why the state government took that much time is the question, many newspapers asked in their publications.

Partha @#781992, what made you think that I am trying to generalize the issue and making Mr Modi/Mr Shah responsible for this? Have I ever mentioned their name or any political party or tried to blame any dispensation? You can discuss the report of any committee but please don't bring politics here by mentioning the names of the politicians/parties you like/dislike the most.

    Sankalan Sir: I reiterate.

Don't generalise. Don't dilute a serious issue. This tactic is now understood by all.

    Sankalan Sir:

The Hema Committee Report was submitted more than five years before and the terrible state government was sitting over it. Whom the state Government was protecting and why: That is the main issue.

Some people are discussing everything under the sun except the main issue. This is being done deliberately to minimize the problem and to give an escape route to the government run by Pinoo-chacha and his Damad-shri. That is the tactic.

The same tactic is being applied to save another terrible government of Mamtaj-apu in another state.

"...... please clarify and stop this unnecessary argument under the garb of new responses."--------I can also make the same comment in respect of your responses, isn't it?

Finally, please discuss the Hema Committee report and the terrible situation of the Malayalam film industry as mentioned in the report. Also inform me and other members what action the state government has taken to punish/protect the main culprits including Siddique.
