If every one decides that he will abide by the extant rules and regulations and comply with the stipulated formalities fully, then corruption will die gradually.
Corruption starts with our own hurry ,lack of compliance, expectation of something beyond or outside the stipulated rules and regulations, or breaking and contravening them.
For example if the stipulated time to get a particular document from a government office is 5 days, and we want it the same or next day, we pressurize the officials, by tempting with bribe or some other way or with some external pressure. There starts the opportunity for corruption. In many cases the officials do not ask, but we offer or tempt them; because we want some extra service or some condoning of some wrongdoing. or a blind ye' to some lapses.
If each of us si ready to wait and comply, and not ready to succumb to corrupt practices corruption will automatically stop.
The Modi government's various measures had started reducing corruption in various levels. The direction should start from top political level. I think it has started.

I agree with Venkiteswaran regarding corruption in local areas. The citizens only are responsible for the corruption at all levels. We try to avoid rules and regulations and we want to get things done quickly. That is why we encourage the concerned authorities by offering them some bribes. But corruption at higher levels in politics is not due to us. That is because of the greed the politicians have. Indirectly the voters are responsible for that also, some may argue. That is true to some extent. Many of the voters take money from the candidates in the election. The candidates spend money and they try all possible ways to recover that money back.
I have never given any bribe to any government officer for my work. Such a necessity has never been raised so far. If we don't want any favour from these officers, we need not give any bribe to them. I hope in the coming days we may witness a reduction in corrupt practices.

Corruption cannot flourish unless we all citizens are determined to fight this deep-rooted malady. It is a strange fact that we are very cautious in educating our friends and colleagues to fight tooth and nail to weed out this practice but this strategy is not followed if we have some work to be done by politicians. We, ourselves, would bypass the accepted rule.
The double standard being practised by the people makes our politicians corrupt.
We might observe a lot of people bribing RTO to get their license renewed in time though they missed taking early initiatives. If the same chain of bribery continues unabated in the office, how else can they be disciplined?

For reducing corruption a good governance is required where punishments are given to the wrong doers. Everyone is not corrupt in the system but even if one person at some higher level is corrupt then it creates an avalanche chain of corrupt people below. Those who do not abide by that top person are shunted and shifted elsewhere.
Citizens also have to play a role as mentioned and elaborated by the members above.
Knowledge is power.

Let me begin with the corruption we see in our locality. Generally, when you construct or buy a house in a town area, and that too in a colony, the electricity lines that come to your house have to come through the electricity poles, right?
But the level of corruption was so high back then when we came to our new house many years ago, that the were no electricity poles around and we had to bring the electricity cable from a pole which was extremely far from our house. This was miserably unsafe and the distance was so much that it was always a risky affair.
After having complained so many times to the department, when nothing was done about it, and no help was provided to even install poles where they were needed, we had no choice but to buy electricity poles ourselves with our money. Back then, each pole cost us around 4000, and we had installed two. This was how our problem was solved.
However, the tussle and discomfort were not over yet. We had to keep complaining and reminding the department to at least provide us with proper street lights on those poles, but no help was ever provided. Only the people from the electricity department came and put numbers on the poles bought by us, thus counting them as poles install by the department.
Another point to note in this episode is that corruption excels in many parts of our country because people don't like to make any effort towards the betterment of their locality and nobody cares about fighting the corruption. We had tried out best possible, but because we were alone in our quest, our solution came up by spending the money ourselves for something the department was supposed to do. And while no neighbor or nearby houses ever tried to complain or request for poles, they were quick to take the benefit of those poles and made sure that the electricity wire to their homes must come from the nearest installed pole now. They did this within 2 days after the pole was installed). Although they knew that we had spent our money to get those poles erected there, they lacked the common ethic about offering us to bear the cost of installation together. This would have made the cost of poles come down to just 500 rupees per family. Nevermind though.
My aim to share this story was not to cry about the money we spent, but the collective consciousness and supportiveness that our society happens to lack sometimes. What I mean to imply from my response is that corruption is not only done by that one person but by an entire group or society. Because if you are not fighting against it and not even supporting the ones who fight for it, you are also a cause of that corruption.
Nowadays, the awareness quotient is on another level as we can explore consumer complaint forums, government apps and ever Twitter (now X), to file a complaint and hope for the necessary against again corruption and carelessness being taken.

Ank Arya

Yes, citizens have a great role in fighting the corruption at local levels. If citizens are alert many things can be got done in that particular area.
Every Govt official is not corrupt. Some are. The problem comes when the people on some high post start protecting the corrupt official due to various reasons not known to us and then it becomes very difficult to punish the corrupt official.
One corrupt person is able to create hundred corrupt persons below so what is required is to identify those high level persons and punish them then only the correct message will go to the people below.
Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
