Why are banks levied so many charges, which gives irritation to the customers?

I went to a bank and gave an old cheque, which the bank employees had no time to verify. They asked to deposit in the cheque box; later the cheque got reverted, and they collected money as a fine from me because it was an old cheque. After that, I wanted to close an account, and then they collected closure charges. For annual usage of a debit card, I have to pay over 600 rupees for the fee. For giving alerts, I have to pay transaction alert charges; for the minimal balance, I have to pay a fine. For getting interest of more than 40k on the fixed deposits and savings account, I have to pay income tax. For writing a positive pay over 2 lakhs, I have to pay a fine.

For usage of other bank ATM's we have to pay extra charges...

Banks are profit-oriented. They are not service organisations. They will incur many expenditures, and they must collect all that money from their customers only. They will do business with our money and earn for themselves. They give loans at a higher interest rate and pay lesser interest rates for the depositers. That way, they are making money. We may not even notice how much we are paying them for banking with them. But these banks are very much needed as we can't make our money lose its value by keeping it in our house in the form of currency notes.
We may sometimes get irritations. But we can't stop going and interacting with banks.

#782763 It is appropriate or logical that banks give loans for higher interest rates and give less interest rates for FD and Saving money, which is there in the bank. The rest are all illogical to impose money on the customer

They may be illogical. But they impose it as they have to get money and make good profits. They charge money even for online transfers also, as far as I know.

I think if a customer challenges various fees levied by his/her bank before a court of law (including consumer court) and pursue the case seriously, the bank would stop levying such charges to that particular customer.

#782768 honorable person should know that taxes will not be levied or imposed only on a particular customer. It will apply to all the customers who fall under the category if it is different in West Bengal or beating drums for a special person, especially those on higher post of the country that I don't know

Respected Sir (who has written the previous response):

I have read the response (#782769) again and again, but unfortunately haven't comprehended properly. However, I am writing a few lines on the issue.

    (a) I do know "that taxes will not be levied or imposed only on a particular customer. It will apply to all the customers who fall under the category". However, I do understand the difference between taxes and charges. On many issues, banks levy arbitrary charges on their own; the charges are not approved by RBI or by any other regulatory authority. In such cases, if the customer press the complaint, the bank may return the extra amount levied arbitrarily.

    (b) As for example, one of my banks suddenly started to deduct a considerable amount as SMS charge and ATM (Debit) charge. I lodged an online complaint and threatened the bank that if the issue is not settled to my satisfaction, I would take up the matter with the banking ombudsmen. The threat worked and the bank returned the extra amount, which had earlier been deducted in an arbitrary manner.

Thank you, Sir. Please don't bring 'those on higher post of the country' everywhere. Please try to understand the exact issue (the difference between taxes and charges) and try to sort it out on your own.

If your FD or savings account money earns interest more than 40k, your interest earnings will be taxable 10 percent it will be applicable for every citizen of India it is not for individuals. All charges imposed on various like closure, debit card charges all are relevant to customers. Banks will follow the guidelines of RBI; if they don't, they can be sued, including private banks.

Even though it is an RBI Mandate, some charges and taxes levied are illogical.

Taxes are levies that are paid for general government services. It is a method for the government to make money. A charge is a levy that is taken in order to provide a service that helps the population from which the money is taken. It is billed for services provided by a person, a business, or a professional.

    I humbly reiterate:

    (a) Taxes and Charges are different.
    (b) Taxes are uniform for a particular group of people or for a particular service.
    (c) Charges are levied by different banks at different rates, sometime arbitrarily.
    (d) Banks can be forced to withdraw arbitrary charges by the customers, if taken up in an appropriate manner.

The author is correct. Banks are rather servicing its customers, making them annoyed. Last week my brother deposited a sum of Rs.4000 into my SBI savings bank account through a branch near to his office. That is from another branch where my account is maintained in another area of same city. But they charged some amount over that. What is meaning of maintaining as Core Banking?

It is because the Corporates who skipped paying interests and loans to the banks for not able to pay to reduce the burden o that all these taxes and charges are taken. Hence to reduce the burden of that, In a Telugu movie the Hero said these dialogues.
